    if its found that the copyrights have been used to stifle competition and create a monopoly, they can be revoked.

    probably the only truly fitting punishment in this case anyway. MS loses copyright on all Windows source code for abusing their monopoly position.

    christ - almost all this shit is written in Fortran still... Fortran 77, i believe and not even 90.

    of course Visual C++ doesnt make a habit of eating your projects right before deadline.

    its gotten to the point where i jump into KDevelop, slap down some widgets, pray it doesnt eat my project, and then go back into emacs for serious editting.

    of course, its SoOOOoOOo much easier to actually to code to than the Gnome monstrosity...

    no offense, but the X-Box IS the implementation of this.

    MS first tried to push it as an "uber home box" a couple years ago, and they couldnt get anone to sign on.

    So they repositioned it as a "game console" and people said - yeh, we'll do that.

    wait - if the XBox takes off, they will move to monopolize the Home PC market.

    no way. way too open to trojan attacks. This basically means, that you dont know what, exactly, is in your path.

    What about Directory symlinks? someone puts a link in /usr/bin/foo -> /nasty/trojan/dir and then all of a sudden, your path searches through there.

    It would also be a horrible waste of resources to search recusively through all these directories.

    no, bad idea.

    i did an obscene amount of 4gl development :-)

    and i understand all those methods of getting around the file access problem...

    however, i had the "joy" of writing an app that took in an arbitrary flat file, parsed it according to arbritrary specs, and inserted it into the corresponsing tables correctly...

    perl, about 2 weeks... 4gl - 6 months easily with use of every single damn "trick" in the book, and some not in it...

    yes, indeed - what other language do you know that DISPLAY "" will cure most segfaults?


    i've moved on beyond an IT job, into a much more "geeky" field... and i'm much happier now...
