Mr. Gates and Mr. Allen have been quietly buying up large amounts of Defense companies, and getting on their boards, and influencing them to use MS products.
so... gates and allen have a hand in what the govie computers run...
some of us want to continue building the house on the solid foundation that was laid by linus et. al.
really... at some point you have to say that your base is "good enough" and we dont need to start over repouring the foundation. screw that. we've got a good thing going, now lets get some killer apps running...
of course Visual C++ doesnt make a habit of eating your projects right before deadline.
its gotten to the point where i jump into KDevelop, slap down some widgets, pray it doesnt eat my project, and then go back into emacs for serious editting.
of course, its SoOOOoOOo much easier to actually to code to than the Gnome monstrosity...
and i understand all those methods of getting around the file access problem...
however, i had the "joy" of writing an app that took in an arbitrary flat file, parsed it according to arbritrary specs, and inserted it into the corresponsing tables correctly...
perl, about 2 weeks... 4gl - 6 months easily with use of every single damn "trick" in the book, and some not in it...
>Gods it's a scary, scary day when I defend
>Informix's 4GL.
yes, indeed - what other language do you know that DISPLAY "" will cure most segfaults?
i've moved on beyond an IT job, into a much more "geeky" field... and i'm much happier now...

wrongo, bucko trollboy....
if its found that the copyrights have been used to stifle competition and create a monopoly, they can be revoked.
probably the only truly fitting punishment in this case anyway. MS loses copyright on all Windows source code for abusing their monopoly position.
that rant would only be good for idiots who dont know what the hell a beowulf is for.
when was the last time you used VB for engineering, computationally heavy tasks?
christ - almost all this shit is written in Fortran still... Fortran 77, i believe and not even 90.
try to change the value of 5 in VB, go ahead... i dare ya.
free television, eh?
.thats right, you probably pay upwards of $50/month for your free content, right? RIGHT?
exactly how many channels do you get over the free antenna nowadays anyway?
oh wait..

not some tired knock-off of a clone of a racer or whatever.
:-)
... Its Linux!!!
something new.
something different.
something only available on linux
give people a *reason* to want to play games on linux instead of windows... a reason better than
that would imply upgrading versions of QT, too...

the real question there is - COO-pon or Que-pon.
geezus ... anyone else blink at that acronym and remember (T)he (H)umble (G)uys?

that would just be silly...
which switch on grep searches for porn?
berkeley has produced two significant products.
LSD and BSD.
This is not a coincidence.
which is the _last_ line of defense against government totalitarianism.
right...
/., you KNOW they hate MS. ZDNet pretends to be unbiased, but it just a MS shill.
good thing MS doesnt have a large stake in zdnet, or else, i'd worry about the bias in their reporting.
at least with
sorry, the Sega Genesis held market dominance over the SNES.
good luck getting it to run.
well, as long as Big Brother (tm - MS) is watching over me, i dont need any nightlights.
its scary because it associates your computer with a centralized database of information about you.
no offense, but the X-Box IS the implementation of this.
MS first tried to push it as an "uber home box" a couple years ago, and they couldnt get anone to sign on.
So they repositioned it as a "game console" and people said - yeh, we'll do that.
wait - if the XBox takes off, they will move to monopolize the Home PC market.
good thing that you have the ultra-secure, no government backdoors UBER-MS encryption there, right...
sigh...
"its encrypted because we say it is, and trust us on that"
PATH with recusion?
/usr/bin/foo -> /nasty/trojan/dir and then all of a sudden, your path searches through there.
no way. way too open to trojan attacks. This basically means, that you dont know what, exactly, is in your path.
What about Directory symlinks? someone puts a link in
It would also be a horrible waste of resources to search recusively through all these directories.
no, bad idea.
