    Yes, this type of technology has already been implemented, if not in flash form. Take any Mac laptop from the last, oh five or six years. Close the screen, and within a second it goes to sleep. You'll see the the front LED pulse which tells you it's in deep hibernate mode and everything's suspended.

    Now, open the screen. Within a second, the screen is back on and you're back to whatever you were doing, your network is reconnected, and you're ready to work.

    It doesn't require any fancy hardware. Apple has this working in Mac OS X on both PowerPC and Intel systems. Funny thing, this instant sleep/wake feature is available on Apple's laptop AND desktop systems.

    The problem is that free trade leads to boom and bust cyles in the third world as corporations jump from country to country chasing the lowest wage. This leads to a boom cycle where the wages go up from 10 cents per day to 25 cents per day and then a bust as the factory moves to an even poorer country.

    Case in point: Mexico. We moved a lot of American production factories to Mexico. Looked like it would work out for a while then Mexico figured they could follow the same philosophy and outsource THAT to Asian countries for even less money. Now the Mexican people are as poor as they've always been (this time without jobs) and we've created yet another slave labor industry in the far east. On top of that, we haven't solved how to get all these goods made in the USA in the first place.

    While I think that the need to produce ethanol is here and the efforts are altruistic, you don't understand why we have import tariffs. We have those things in place to encourage American companies to buy goods that are made HERE IN THE USA rather than importing them from abroad (which would be more expensive because of the tariff). I completely agree that we should produce ethanol by any means necessary but please keep the import tariffs in place. This would encourage growers in the USA to start their own corn and sugarcane crops, with ethanol processing plants as a bonus. You have to remember that we have a record breaking trade deficit that is completely screwing up the economy and it's doing nothing more than drive production and cheap labor overseas while we lose jobs in our country. Tariffs are often labelled "protectionism" but at this point in time, we NEED it.

    I hope you're right. The age-old argument used to be that if you allowed dual-boot or native-speed virtualization, then game companies would just forget about making Mac ports since the user would just easily boot into Windows. Same goes for other software. I know that Adobe is already committed resources toward an Intel-Mac Creative Suite but with Boot Camp, Adobe might one day say "why should we spend all this money on conversion when Mac users could just boot into Windows to use Photoshop?"

    I guess the saving rebuttle is that although Boot Camp exists, the user has to consciously purchase another OS license (Windows) just to take advantage of it and maybe the average Joe will be impressed enough with Mac OS X that he won't want Windows at all.

    Today I was reading the wonderful tip on Automounting AFP and NFS Sharepoints at Startup, which is found on Mike Bombich's great Mac OS X site, and it occured to me that this might work for SAMBA (Windows) shares as well. I tried it, and sure enough, it does!
    SAMBA sharepoints and standard Windows "shared directories" work in almost exactly the same way as AFP shares. The only difference is the URL that you use. If you want to dynamically mount a Windows (or SAMBA) sharepoint, follow the directions at Mike's site for a regular AFP Dynamic mount and replace the URL value with:

    url==smb://username:password@servername/sharepoint
    Where servername is either the IP address, hostname, or fully-qualified hostname (foo.example.com) of the machine that you would like to connect to, and where sharepoint is the shared directory that you would like to connect to.
    In some cases, depending on the configuration of your network, this may not work. If that happens to you, try:

    url==smb://Username:Password@Workgroup/servername/ sharepoint
    Note: I tested this on MacOS 10.2.8 and can make no promises or guarantees that it will work on any other version of OS X, but it worked for me. Because I have no reason to do so, I have not actually tested this with a static mount, only dynamic. The first URL I listed worked perfectly for me. However, in researching printing to SAMBA-shared printers, I saw many reports of a whole variety of different URLs working for some setups, and not working for others. I suggest that if the two URLs I provided don't seem to work for you, try variations on the theme, or search here for the tips related to printing to samba shared printers and SMB shares for ideas.

    I did this the first day at work on my 10.4.x Mac Mini. Just connect to the Windows share and click that checkbox that says "Remember this password in my keychain"

    When the Windows share appears on your desktop as a server icon, open your System Preferences panel, go to Accounts, click Login Items, then drag the server icon from your Desktop to the Login Items list. Done.

    The next time you login the server will automatically appear on your desktop.
