    I foresee a frenzy of cheap Chinese-made DVD recorders where you can simply press "tray open" and "0" to switch off the DRM system. They made region coding look a bit of a lame duck, anyway.

    Despite of all these bouracratic devices that try to avoid unauthorized copy of copyrighted content and illegal importing (yes, it can be made) of cheap Chinese-made recorders, there is a much bigger problem when letting lobbyist (sorry for typo) to force the aprooval of laws like this.

    Fact! US is not a power exporter of eletronic consumer products. But, it still export some products. Try to imagine what will happens in countries like Brazil or India where DRM isn't part of its legislation.

    The answer is very simple. They won't import US-made eletronic devices that is DRM limited. In short term this may mean nothing. But in long term will mean the arise of Chinese, Indian and Brazilian eletronic brands.

    Letting this kind of thing happen is just killing US industry.

    But it happened with an AMD processor.

    I've bought an AMD Atlhon XP 2500+ Barton, I've saw the box and the label, and also have checked the OPN (part number). When checking the processor using AMD's tool I've discovered that it was an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ TBread, less cache and slower CPU.

    AFAICS you are one of those who fight until last consequences to keep the status quo.

    The truth is that information has always been free. And on 19th century somebody tried to keep it under control, the intend was very good, but lawyers transformed it on what we see today.

    The current avaiable technology points to the information freedom, and that's the future of public avaiable information, freedom. Any kind of action taken in order to avoid is spending precious time that could be used to adapt themselves to new reality.

    Seriously. Acting like this is ask for ilegal copies, here in Brazil you really can buy ilegal copies for US$ 2, if you don't care about boxes you can buy for US$ 1,25 (2 for US$ 2), and when you buy a legal copy at local store you can't play it in your linux computer.

    For me it seems that they want it!

    Here in Brazil there's no regulation on telemarketing about when not to call. But still I have a solution that usually solves the problem for me.

    When identified as a telemarketing call I ask to send me printed material, and ask to never call back. I call back when I'm interested, not them.

    Usually works.

    What kind of copy protection can be done in a flash memory?

    Let's try to figure a real life condition:

    You buy at local store a flash-card with your favorite band, containing 18 songs. You can listen to it as many times you want. But not copy? How does the flash card understand that the data is being read to be copied or to be listened?

    Let's suppose that you need a special reader, so the flash-card need less intelligence. Still how does the special reader know that the data is being copied?

    This is nonsense. Vapourware!

    Seriously. Can't MPAA understand that skiping broadcast-flag is as simple as bring a single circuit board from outside US? DMCA is only valid in US, until now, and a passthrough to ignore broadcast-flag is very easy to implement.

    Even if US enforces DMCA to other countries (in CAFTA, for example), I have serious doubts that third-world countries will be able to have a serious fiscalization.

    By doing so all that US will get is the destruction of its online porn industry (if it can be called industry), all players will migrate to Canada and Mexico, or to some other country where they are not taxed.
