  1. What's legal, and what'll happen on Bittorrent Creator A Digital Pirate? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Legally speaking, Cohen is as guilty as a gun manufacturer. He simply provided the way to others commit a crime. If people using BitTorrent are supposed to make unautorized copies of copyrighted material, then people having a gun are supposed to kill.

But the reality is much more complex then justice would like it to be. RIAA and MPAA are lobbying so heavily that Cohen will be considered guilty and will pay for crimes that he didn't commited. In RIAA/MPAA conception he must sue the users.

While USA and Europe are too busy worrying about copyright protection, developing countries like China, India and Brazil are more worry about creating conditions to receive the development departments of huge companies like IBM.

    That's what will probably happen.

It's the end of adware companies. DoubleClick is 'hype-ing' on an issue that can become a risk to their business.

If the legitimate democratic Canadian Government decided that DMCA isn't apropriate for Canadian People it's US' duty to respect Canadian Government decision as strongly as it fights for democracy in Middle East.

It's about time to the US Government to understand that THE WORLD must be democratic, not only countries. It's about time to the US Government understand that it's necessary to respect the laws and the decisions made by the United Nations.

    What would it means.

When buying DRMd content I would have almost no rights upon it, basically I could access it through a few certified media. Of course it would cost much less.

When buying no DRM content I would be able to copy into other media, my computer, print it, but only for personal use, maybe personal redistribution (no P2P networks), and it would cost the same as today.

Of course ther would be a third level, that gives you the right to copy, redistribute (including P2P), broadcast, but not for commercial use (which would require another license). And this would cost much more then today.

Volunteering as a free software developer is a pleasure, so developers WILL NEVER stop working on Linux. And suppose that they will, it's a very good chance for the popularity of Hurd (still incipient), and others free software OSes.

As told before: FUD. But I'll add one more commentary. This man has shown, again, that he can't see beyond his own nose, he's simply unable to understand the point of view of others and think about how they would act, how they feel about things that they praise so much.

He simply didn't have the effort to look for solutions similar to the "secret-projet-that-will-kill-linux" that actually runs on windows and is free. It's a mistery how this man can be a columnist so respected.

Of course there are many good things to be said about this man. But I'll let it to other opportunity.
