The electric company makes no claims of giving you all of the electricity you want for a flat rate. Most broadband providers are doing just that, and then trying to set limits after the fact. If my isp wanted to offer different tiers I'd have no problem paying for what I use, but I'd be pissed if they just capped us all with no option to pay for what we use.

The problem with Comcast's tech support is that the majority of their call centers are in Canada (disclaimer: I'm Canadian and have a few friends who work at these call centers). You see, the majority of their calls are from people who say things like " Hey, uh, my internet's broken.". After ten minutes or so of "can you load any webpages in explorer", disconnect the cable modem and reconnect it" and so on, they finally ask the sub to power cycle the computer and find out that he can't because there's been a power failure and he's had no current for the last two hours. I believe this to be one of the main reasons why their tech support sucks so much: they've all stopped caring.

We were discussing the whole issue of how children deal with tragedies such as this (she's in child care) and then this happens today. I'm glad to see there's someone else who, despite how horrible it was, wouldn't want to have missed the Challenger accident, even so young. Just my thoughts on the whole situation. My thoughts are with the families of the fallen.

Say what you want about all the other tools, a good interface makes an OS usable. I don't want to spend days on end getting my UI "just so" and I happen to like Ximian Gnome. It's the best for me. And while we're at it, I like Mandrake and prefer vi over emacs. Flame away!

We made our own music with no help from a record company. We made promo tapes to give to the owners of venues who wanted to hear us before they signed us to play a show. It seems pretty apparent that there are people who enjoy what Nintendo has to offer, and we're not all kids. Make a better product. Oracle costs way more than MS SQL Server, but people still use it. People (or, more specifically, companies) will pay more for a better product. Rather than whine about MS undercutting them, they should be trying to explain why their codec is better. If my DVD player costs an extra 25 cents to make but I know I'm getting a superior product, I'll spend it. Hell, I'll even eat that extra 25 cents per unit to keep my player priced with the competition who used the cheaper, inferior codec. The MPEG consortium has large corporations as members. The same works for movies. Can't get into that 'R' flick you wanna see? Download it from KaZaA. Get a parent to rent it on vid for you or take you to the theatre. Point is, the rating system has served it's purpose. If a parent takes their 14 yr old to see an 'R' slasher flick, that's their decision as a parent. If the kid d/l's it or whatever, then that's their decision...it's not up to the gov't to protect the children from media...that's a parent's job. The same way the clerk at Blockbuster would question a 10 yr old renting "Showgirls" or the guy at the counter ID'd me when I went to see "The Crow", as long as we get that from the people at video game stores, and actually enforcing the ratings system, I say we're all good.
