No, it's in 5.1 as default, but OSX actually ships with 5.1, whereas "classic" ships with a previous version (I run 5.1 on OS 8.6 and it's still turned on by default, but I shut it off long ago). BTW, you can shut the option off by clicking edit>preferences>receiving files>download options and unchecking the boxes at the bottom
So then the sole function of this company is to buy patents and send their legions of lawyers after everyone in sight. There should be some law against this. I'm all for getting what you're owed, but it's not like this is a company or individual that invented the technology. All they did was buy the patent off of someone else for the purpose of sending out the attack lawyers. IMHO, we need laws to make patents non-transferable. If some entity wants to license the technology, fine, but they shouldn't be able to outright buy the patent. Then again, I'm an idiot, so take it for what it's worth...
sorry for the "yeah, I agree with him" post, but you stole all my thoughts. In the heyday of Napster I actually bought *more* cds, because I knew what I was buying before hand, and not buying it for the one track out of fifteen or so on the disc that I'd heard on the radio. And since Napster's forced demise, I've stopped buying cds *except* for ones from bands that I know put out good music (the afore-mentioned new CAKE cd, and anything NIN). I refuse to buy cds and put money in the pockets of the same people who are trying their damnedest to alienate their consumers.
I was hoping that Phil would mention to us whether or not the Post had offered to print a correction on this. It's only one sentence (the part about feeling guilty) but it obviously seems to be a big one. Anyone know if they printed a correction?
you mean, what you're saying then, is that I can still trade files with whomever I choose, but if I do it through napster's servers, I have to pay? and this does what to end piracy? what's that you say? nothing? you mean the RIAA is only going along with this for the MONEY? THOSE DASTARDS!!!! THEY LIED TO US!!!!
XM provides 100 digital channels, a signicant number of which are commercial free
maybe it's just me, and I'm not necessarily being frugal, but if I'm paying $10 a month for radio, why should I have to endure commercials? If I'm going to pay a premium for a service that's above and beyond what the free version of said service offers, it has to be worth something more than the free version. It's a great idea, but I think they're going at it all wrong.
The hacking of the Dreamcast had nothing to do with it's demise. The fact that the games sucked had everything to do with it's downfall (well, that and the controllers pretty much sucked too). I mean, we all install a free OS and software on our pcs, and it hasn't killed the market for home computers. And anyone who paid $200 for a dreamcast for the sole purpose of installing linux/mame/whatev needs a life.
It's a great idea, but it won't fly. Do you think that every guy that goes to a strip club wants to use his Visa/MC/whatev so that when his wife opens the credit card bill, she can see that he wasn't really at the hospital reading to terminal patients last wednesday night like he said?
Apple's next Power Macs, due to be announced early next year at Macworld Expo San Francisco, will "definitely" support the USB 2.0 and 1394b connectivity specifications and the DDR SDRAM memory standard, company deep throats have told The Register.
Looks like a little more than your run of the mill rumour (excerpted from the article at the Register). In any case, rumour or not, doesn't change the fact that Apple is slow at hell when it comes to releasing, which, if you had read my comment before replying, was the point I was making.
Probably takes someone like Apple to be the first to make boxes with USB 2.0 and 1394b
I use macs all day at work and I'd take it any day over ANY pc os for what I do (graphics), but come on. Sure, they're *announcing* their plans to build these boxes, but there's no bloody way they'll be first to release it. That's my main gripe with Apple, is that it takes them so long to release ANYTHING at all...promises, promises.
There are plenty of laws that don't get enforced to their fullest extent, simply because it would just be ridiculously difficult to enforce them. Why don't they cite every jay-walker? Why don't they ticket you for driving 5km over the speed limit? I propose that everyone keeps on using their normal encryption (you do use it, don't you?) even if they implement a backdoor. Send all email encrypted. If it gets snagged and you get arrested, give them the key, so they can see that it's harmless. After the first few thousand such arrests, the gov't will quickly realize that there's no point to this, and they'll give it up. Or, don't give them the key, and we'll choke the prison system with our geeks;) And as a side note, wouldn't they be in violation of the DMCA for breaking your encryption, even if it is through a known backdoor? Or would I be in violation of the DMCA for NOT using backdoored encryption, since it would have to be proprietary (can't open source the backdoor) and I would be knowingly circumventing it?
Who's to say it'll stop at IE or Word? If they get away with this on Frontpage, what's keeping them from modifying the EULA for Windows, so that you can't do/say/type/draw/code anything disparaging about MS from within Windows without violating your license agreement?
True, Microsoft may not be Congress, but doesn't that also mean that Microsoft cannot make laws? I can hang a sign on my front door that says 'By walking into my house, you grant me permission to beat you with a large stick', but that doesn't mean it'll hold up in court. MS can say whatever they want...doesn't make it law.
Then again... I.A.N.A.L. and all...

that's funny...because the shop monkey that put the fan/sink on my athlon 1.0gHz (the shop INSISTED that they had to mount it for me) didn't plug the damn thing in (and I, like an idiot, didn't check). About one minute after I booted, it just shut down and I couldn't figure out why. When I tried to reboot, it beeped and gave me a temp warning (asus mobo).

I had one of these in the late 80's.
It was called the Nintento Power Glove.
It let me beat up Glass Joe, the Hippo, and Mike Tyson.
And it was grand.

Anybody out there with a financial background care to comment on why they have such hot products
who cares if they're hot? just so long as the heat sink doesn't fall off, you're all good

yeah, but the credit card is much more convenient for making lines than those cumbersome razor blades.

there's no such thing as "unhackable". it's just that nobody wants to waste the time to find a way into a box that holds 0.001% of the server market.
I did that search, and this is by far the funniest thing that came out of it...but I'm not sure why.

I didn't see "Killing an Arab" by The Cure on that list though...wonder if that was an intentional oversight...

I'd have to say so, since the temp monitor on my asus mobo factory defaults to shutdown at 81 degrees celsius (that's with an athlon 1.0 gHz)
doh...I thought it was the scientific study of guys named 'Phil'
