Criminals, on the other hand, will continue to use widely available crypto packages with no back door and will still be able to transmit messages without threat of law enforcement decrypting them maybe so, but then the gov't would nail them for using illegally non-backdoored crypto...so the criminals get nailed either way. if they suspect you and intercept a message they can't break, they'll nail you for it...screwed either way

I'm sure this will end up costing me some of my oh-so-beloved karma, but I'll have to agree with this. I'm all for using linux/bsd/unix/name-your-favourite-freeOS-here for whatever purpose you can, but the question here was clearly asking for opinions on the standalone. I agree that any of those can be a great firewall, but that's not the question. If he asked about linux and we all posted alternate solutions, we'd get modded down to the basement...but nobody here wants to mod down anything related to bsd/linux, no matter how off topic it is. But that's just my $0.02

  3. Routers I've tried on Choosing a Router/Firewall for the Home LAN · · Score: 1

At work I use a Multitech RouteFinder. It's got a built-in 4 port hub, nice config utility, monitor software so you can see all the activity, and the convenience of being able to reboot it through the software. At home I use an SMC 4 port. What I really like about it is that it configs through a web browser, and lets you clone your computers mac address (some highspeed providers only let you log in from one mac...go figure...). Both of these have all the usual features (NAT, ip forwarding, blocking...), but the SMC was signifigantly cheaper (on sale at CompUSA, plus mail in rebate, it only cost me $50. The Multitech was like $225)

If you want to get some EXTRA features that are included at no extra charge, you have to give up something in exchange.

But what constitutes 'extra features at no extra charge'? Can they sell me a cd that's totally encrypted and make me enter personal info to unlock the whole thing, saying that I only purchased the actual physical disk, and the music is just a "free extra"? There doesn't seem to be an industry standard for the price of a cd, so who determines what's just a bonus? If I purchase a cd, I want access to all of the data on it, not "half now, half when you pay us some more"

the Tyan Thunder K7 has been out for some time now, and I believe MSI just released a dual Athlon board as well. These boards use the AMD 760mp chipset and a "special" Athlon MP processor. You can pick up a Tyan Thunder board on Pricewatch for under $250 USD and the AthlonMP 1.2 Ghz processors for about $160 - 2x the price of the non-mp Athlons :/

seems like broadband is really expensive in the states. My Bell Canada Sympatico adsl only costs me $35 a month, including modem rental, and I know that cable modems are the same cost - and that's Canadian dollars, so it's like 46 cents USD. Maybe you wouldn't have the issue of dial-up discrimination if the broadband weren't so bloody expensive.

  11. Re:Not typical behavior. Anyway, you need Debian! on Do We Spend More On Linux Or Windows? · · Score: 1

My first choice used to always be debian. Then one day I installed a new hard drive and decided I'd upgrade to the newest best-est debian out there...and it pissed me off. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to start an x server with my vid card. So I downloaded redhat, and it worked like a charm. But that's all off topic. I've spent $0 on windows (unless you count the wintax I paid on a compaq I bought in '95) and I've bought two distros (debian and redhat) but downloaded all the rest. Add in my small library of books on linux, and I've spent WAY more on it than on windows. So hey, I guess it's true - you get what you pay for. I paid nothing for windows, I got nothing in return ;)
