Do people think Google officials should be sent to Thailand on extradition the way Australia sent alleged copyright criminals to the United States? Is this the same situation, or is it fundamentally different?
Ok, I am going to respond to this obvious troll because somehow it god modded way up (shame on you mods). Australian law is anagolous to the US law that the extradited suspect was charged under (what he was charged with is illegal in both countries). However, in this case the US has no law even remoltely resembling the Thai law.
ISP to cache the google homepage. Also, when making a modification on said homepage, it would make sense for Google to broadcast a signal to all ISPs to update their caches, or even to broadcast the new homepage to everyone.
Congratulations, your just invented the proxy! Yay! And it doesn't make sense because the "popular part" of the web is not static anymore. Even google's simple homepage lets me sign in and customizes the page for ME. Most news sites do this as well. Google's logo on the orther hand is worth caching and maybe the most popular youtube movie but proxies are already pretty good at caching static data so no need to reinvent the wheel there.
I've heard it's the same thing with TV's -- these days they always consume a little bit of power so they can be instant on. Honestly, I'm not in so much of a rush that I need to consume extra energy all the time for things like this. 30 seconds is not an unreasonable amount of time to wait for full brightness.
I find that a bit dubious. Last I checked a light switch was either "ON" (providing energy to bulb) or "OFF". When the switch is "OFF" the circut is broken and by definition can not "use" any power.
That shows, that with the confirmed group, the volunteers are very significant.
I interpret it differently. IMHO, it shows that no one group is very significant at all, which is a good sign of a healthy development community.
Also, the debate is about volunteers vs paid developers not volunteers versus Red Hat. Imagine if there were tens of thoudands of companies each contributing less than 1%, together they contribute 98.5% while volunteers contribute the remaining 1.5%. Would you say that, being the largest group, the volunteers were the most significant contributors or are the paid developers?
Did you read the article you linked to? Only 7.7% of contributions were from comfirmed volunteers...
Quote:..at least 65% of the code which went into 2.6.20 was created by people working for companies. If the entire "unknown" group turns out to be developers working on a volunteer basis - an unlikely result - then just over 1/3 of the 2.6.20 patch stream was written by volunteers. The real number will be lower, but it still shows that a significant portion of the code we run is written by developers who are donating their time.

And we don't really think you're stupid, any more than you think people who believe in Shiva or Mithra are stupid.
Please don't speak for all atheists as if we are a unified homogenous group with the same beliefs. That's a bit silly. The most annoying thing about being an atheist is that some wack job (not that you are) starts speaking for you. Especially since a lot of these wack jobs are on some sort of antireglious soap box pissing people off. As a result when you mention that you are an atheist you are, in some peoples minds, equated with the last wacko they heard from.
Why would I have to look it up? Do you think you are the only one who knows what "Vapid" means? I'm willing to bet most people here don't need to look it up.
Are you kidding me? All he wanted was his old keyboard back. If somebody gave me one of those new keyboards with the vertical layout I would probably beat them around the head with it.
I agree. Especially with the windows vista upgrade looming. If KDE4 delivers I may not ever even bother to try to "upgrade" to vista.
I have switched to linux probably 4 or 5 times in the last 10 years; always switching back in 3 or 4 months. This time it might just stick.
Linux GUIs are like Korean cars while windows is more like Chevrolet. Over the last 10 years the Korean's have just kept plugging away producing cheap no nonsense cars, copying the successful looks and styles of the leaders. Slowly becoming more and more polished, until now, suddenly they have started to innovate and surpass. While Chevrolet is, ummm , well, Chevrolet.
(Oh, and in this metaphor OSX is a finely crafted European car, you guessed it, a jaguar [but with only one pedal... and you must open a terminal window to change gears]).
Your analogy is flawed. Using your analogy, if a car is like a computer and gasoline is like the OS, then, in France, it would be illegal to buy a car WITH gasoline. Everybody would be required to bring along a jerrycan when purchasing a car.
Actually, I believe he is saying that currently yahoo's investment allocation resembles peanut butter on toast but it shouldn't be. He hates peanut butter and would rather the investment be more akin to, say, lobster pate. Makes sense to me.
I have a hard time believing that these ancient humans and neanderthals "made love". I would say it's all the more likely that one group forcibly intermingled with the other.
Why do you have a heard time believing that? Do you think "love" is a recent invention along side the automobile and the telephone?
The proverbial rats' nest behind your computer could completely disappear with this technology.
No, the problem you will then have is power. Everything still needs power. Keyboard, monitor, mouse etc.
but when they're one of the major players in town,
Or moving to a different town?
Dude, he said "commercialize it"..... not give it away for free..... ugh..

Apple meet orange.
Secondly, you'll note the person you are replying to will not reply. That's because you broke Godwin's Law.
Not to be picky, but shouldn't you say that he comfirmed or conformed to Godwin's law? Breaking Godwin's law would be a noble thing.

Unless he is out to get Rieser because he married the girl who snubbed Sturgeon.

Religious people never change their minds. Or rather, those that do are called heretics, and up until recently were frequently burned at the stake.
How very american....
People are still burned (or stoned) in some parts of the world.
Firefox makes money off of it too. Google pays Fire Fox a lot of money for those searches.

Don't forget the 12 "pearl like" boys. Homosexuality is a crime in this life but in the next apparently you can go to town.
The J in AJAX stands for JavaScript. You can't have AJAX without JavaScript.
AJAX == Asynchronous JavaScript and XML.

inefficient electric furnace
How can an electric furnace be inefficient? Am I missng something?
Your analogy is flawed. Using your analogy, if a car is like a computer and gasoline is like the OS, then, in France, it would be illegal to buy a car WITH gasoline. Everybody would be required to bring along a jerrycan when purchasing a car.
Umm, where in Canada do you live? I have been hiring in Victoria BC and it is very hard to find good prospects.
Umm, I think raccoons ate your reading comprehension.
Actually, I believe he is saying that currently yahoo's investment allocation resembles peanut butter on toast but it shouldn't be. He hates peanut butter and would rather the investment be more akin to, say, lobster pate. Makes sense to me.
Well only about 16.7 percent of the world's population has access to the internet. So a while.
