Do not use complex queries then. If your DB is on the same host as your web/application server there should be no big performance penalty in doing series of "smaller" queries. As an added bonus - they well may be easier to debug. And do not name your tables "order" or your fields "desc" (though I really hate prefixes/suffixes).
Are we talking about computer equipment here? 'Cos almost all Sony drives are LiteOn OEMs (with occasional BTC model). At least I have not seen a true Sony drive for.... ever?
Are we talking about region coding here? I thought it was about skipping "non-skippable" parts? Samsung calls it "Q-Play" or something... Yeah.... Consumer who (thinks that he) bought a DVD disk skipping the part accusing him of being a pirate... well, that sure puts industry at risk.
You are _absolutely_ right! Why the heck should I care about system libraries when _my_ files are at risk?! Sadly, this argument rarely if ever comes in Linux security discussions - "you shouldn't run as root", "you shouldn't run as root" they say...;) To hell with that - if they take my "home" then I don't care - take/usr/lib too - as long as it is my _personal_ computer. Seriously - is there one Linux distro providing sandboxed (maybe several levels even) environment for browsing etc..? What could be done - I don't know what, frankly - to prevent then propagation of trojans (with or without user assistance) between sandbox levels?
And to be fair - this all applies to Windows, of course.
Just to add my 2 info-cents... Jim Starkey is basically the father of Interbase/FirebirdSQL DB (over 20 years ago). Borland did not do very well in marketing it but Interbase was truly revolutionary in many ways - superb transactions handling, no locks, any locks, until they are absolutely needed etc... And InnoDB copied many ideas from there, for example (if you try and benchmarks some scenarios between FB and MySQL/InnoDB the results are very, very similar). And BTW, the word "blob" is invented by Jim Starkey too.
Now I wonder what impact Jim Starkey joining MySQL will have on FB development?
With crippled OpenGL and those non-admin-running restrictions, I doubt _Vista_ will be able to run most _current_ applications and games. Lots of stuff will have to be rewritten.
Well, the other party may be at the office at the computer and not really at ease to talk to you at the moment. Or you could be in some public place (public transit, movies...) and don't want to disturb people around you. Or it is 1AM and you hesitate calling your friend, but maybe he's still hanging in ICQ on his PC? Then - there are some things that are easier to discuss over IM than over voice calls. Then - the other party may be on another continent and long distance calls from the cell cost... oh, my dear. Well, there are different situations and it is a good thing to have JIMM at my cell phone. Pity that on most phones it cannot run in background.
Video iPod? Hah! If I want to watch a movie on the go I just encode it to 320x480 (whichever comes first) resolution and watch it on my Palm ($300+card). No problems at all. On modern CPUs reencoding is fast (up to several times the "normal" flow). One gig SD card takes _several_ movies in very good quality. And if don't want bothering with reencoding there's a good chance that 700MB AVI would play nicely as it is.
Now if Sony would not be arrogant assholes and just used miniDVDs (3") and MPEG4 codec then maybe I would've had a second thought. As it stands now. No, thanks.
There really is no data abstraction in.NET (as, BTW, in C++ and Java), the application development is business in itself (you will be busy for quite a long time writing even some not-so-complex apps) and as for "advanced theories" - what about them?.Net is a copycat. Even as some people are saying there were nothing interesting done in computer programming since Smalltalk,.Net is not even as "revolutionary" as Java was (and is). What's here to discuss? Enjoy your salary while.Net is a popular buzzword. Then got rejected like VB programmers got.
Check it out dudes - amongst widgets they include bash.org reader (by Opera!). Can you imagine this in MSIE or even FF? What's next? - out-of-the-box porn grabber? Those guys are cool, I guess... (And they know how to program effectively).
I believe that people are disilusioned with "hard core", "realistic", 3d accelerated bullshit pushed on PC and latest consoles. They are just not fun. Period. And - as far as PCs are considered - you need an expensive update. Constantly.
OTOH, AFAIK, market for cellphone games flourish.
I just wish that some device like, I dunno, Zodiac (RIP), comes out of niche and becomes popular. I would dearly love to have a PDA, multimedia player, Internet appliance and a decent game console in one compact case. Yes, DS (especially new "lite" version) maybe comes close but it is being promoted as a game console only and PSP is just too big and games are no fun. Games, movies are too expensive too. And still it is not a PDA.
All in all, I somewhat miss the days when the games were designed and implemented by individuals or small enthusiastic teams, and not by suits-run corporations.
The language is the tool, sorry. Delphi is more powerful (tool) than VB. Python is more powerful (tool) than Java, etc. No matter what PHBs think.

Verboten? Then I will nicht use it on meinen boxen.
So muslims can now watch Simpsons too?
Microsoft research guys really rock!
And now if you ducktape Nintendo Revolution controller to a chair... the options are endless!

What - and believe me, this is strictly hypotetical (hah-hah! :) - you were offered mod points or karma bonus for reading the F article?
I'll send you readme.html.pif file pointing it out.

What about mobile and "Core" CPUs?
Take that, digg!!

T9. Practice.
You know - observe how people who never used computers/keyboards hunt for letters and "type" by one finger. Same thing here basically.

The guy with the biggest JPEG?

And unlike PSP, Palm fits nicely in any pocket.
So, the system requirements should be expected to be about 3 Gigs of RAM minimum, right?
1. Borrow a shitload of money
/. is not the best place for this question...
2. ???
3. Profit!
Well, maybe

And because some people cannot drive we should encourage them all driving Humvies, yep.
