AFAIK it's all about efficiency - we are talking about indexed searches. It's ok to grep 1MB, but even searching by filename on my whole HDD at home takes a minute maybe. As amount of stored data grows - we don't want the search times to grow linearly, we want indexed searches. Well - this said, the whole WinFS idea kinda sucked. It was intended to be applied only to "Documents and settings" and frankly - I guess I don't have anything of interest there. Why a simple (ok, _relatively_ simple) FS plugin, or rather a set of plugins for different file types, wouldn't suffice, I don't know. (May Reiser beat MS here?)
But does it have anything to do with people needing support that happen to live outside of USA? I think if a German, for example, user would like to "talk to someone" they'd rather use someone local (to them) and not calling to US.
Me, my PHP scripts look like this: <<BOF>> <?php code.... ?> <<EOF>> IE, I don't embed. And then - if I need table, I call startTable(..), row(...) or smth. For forms I have a self-written module and my code then looks somewhat like:
But don't be afraid! As evolution and free market rules state this kinds of civilizations are bound to destroy themselves clearing way to more healthy ones! PS: Just don't take the world with it.:(
Claiming "what I use is the best 'cos I picked it up 10 years ago and never looked sideways since" is really BS. No arguing. But having discussions is not at all BS. And if there's "a list why" is an ok-ish type of a discussion. Anyway - usually programmers trying to play around with "exotic" (for them) languages tend to be better programmers in their "mainstream/default" environment. And denying that Java (or C++ for that matter) is cumbersome for _all the tasks_ is a sign of people not knowing better.
... the tribe invited the researchers for a dinner where the tribe has found the researchers to be unable to tell edible roots from extremely poisonable ones.
In SP1 (and XP original I think) there is a certain time during system startup when it is on the network already but the "Personal Firewall" is not yet started. This time is long enough for some exploit to "own" the machine. Pisses me off.
Figure out those kids for sure (should be not hard, eh?) and then send them letters saying that if they not pay you $20-$50 or smth then you will report them. Yes, blackmail:)
1Ghz is surely impressive (if not hot) but it's not a question of how big is it, it's about what you can do with it. Let's see how does it improve on a typical current PDA:
Q: Can I (easily) type on it? Using 6, 8, 10 fingers? Q: Can I (comfortably) watch a 16:9 movie? With surround sound? Q: Digicam you say? What, with optical zoom and flash? Q: Surely I can take it with me into the wild and the batteries last forever?
Well - I gonna stick with a handheld instead of "handtop" I guess. No, really.
Hah! Thanks for a laugh;) I'd take a Unix for a server any time, but I do not see anything "nice clean" about, EG,/usr/lib, or even/etc, or... And installing/uninstalling apps is no more clean on Linux than on Win. And there are still roughly the same security issues in "user land". And I bet 99.99% of Linux "power users" won't be able to tell what every particular file on their system is for... But still - having no registry and files (dead)locking is a bless.
Well - what makes _me_ think Windows in an x86-only product is the simple fact that it is an x86-only product _now_. And having OS run on an arch is sooo different from having apps available for that arch. Even GNU/Linux have this issues.
Yeah, "That's funny. Laugh" section is really about the serious sports. Oh, they should've placed it to "IT.slashdot.org" I think!!! (Anyone remembers?;)
When was the last time that a new processor name did not raise a wave of giggles on/. and other places? BUT! When the dust settles it seems like people at marketing dep's are not _that_ idiotic (and that's scary;) Anyone still finds names like Celeron or Athlon really silly?

What's worse is that (some?) people tend to "print and drop" files. "Why saving it? I won't need it".
I thought DE stands for Deutschland.
Why is it ok to import sneakers and t-shirts from cheap Phillipine workers and importing "office jobs" is not?

Well - procedural programming still kinda rocks
I'd estimate that I have no more than 1-3% of HTML in my PHP.
But don't be afraid! As evolution and free market rules state this kinds of civilizations are bound to destroy themselves clearing way to more healthy ones! :(

No. That's what PHP, Perl, etc scripts are for. Really - how much raw HTML people write this days?

1GB, 2GB, many!

And for me that's THE problem with open source now.

Also a time machine. To go back in time to fix the "oh, dang" typo.
Good thing it's Derby and not Firebird.
Anyway - why bother renaming and what is "Open Source Name"?

"... its content is going to keep growing exponentially ..." etc...
:-)
Welcome back from your coma! Things have changed in the last 5 years...
Seriously - how many useful sites still working w/o subscriptions? How do they index "protected" content?....
Next time when talking about batteries please make a distinction between "palm" hours and "pocket" hours. Thanks.
And then they add Windows to ruin it all.
Uhm. Much less likely. People who gonna "slap linux on it" would very probably buy hardware w/o MS tax, right?
