    Strictly speaking, you're right. But viruses can spread so quickly these days that a lower hit rate would merely mean a Mac virus would spread over several days instead of several hours - and might be harder to detect since the total impact on network traffic would be lower.

    The new HPs, as mentioned, use ARM chips, not Saturns.

    On the downside, HP really didn't do a very good job with the 49G+, or the new 33S. The 49G+ has a terrible keyboard, and the people on comp.sys.hp48 have blasted the 33S for having an unreadable LCD.

    Two reasons. (1) because back in the day there was Unix, Ultrix, Xenix, and, for all I know "Bobnix". (2) Unix was a trademark of AT&T which both caused the various name permutations and generally pissed off the hacking community.

    Uh. yeah. That's me. posting from AlBook and modbombing the apple fanatics. And yet - somehow posting to the same thread.

    If it makes you feel better, said AlBook hasn't had any of these signal strength problems - although I do have the !@#%$!@# problem where trying to print to a shared printer locks up the Airport card altogether.

    Lots of people are complaining about fewer bars, but nobody seems to have demonstrated worse connectivity. It's quite possible that signal strenght hasn't changed but just that they changed the way they measure signal strength.

    Seriously, you're right; although the two factors are related it's the inertia that's important relative here, not the weight per se.

    A monopod with a handle isn't a steadycam. Steadycam uses gimbals, springs and a bodymount to basically put a shock absorber between you and the camera.

    All this does is add more weight - which will help you hold your modern teeny-tiny camera steady, but's that's far cry from being able to hold the camera still while you jog up the Art Museum steps.

    Not to mention that when the material was boosted up into high orbit, it was because it had decayed to the point that it no longer produced useful amounts of power - add a few centuries and you've got a block of barely-radioactive heavy metals wrapped in ceramic.

    "Bias" implies an ulterior or exterior motive. Extending your own previous research is not "bias" and is irrelevant to the question of whether or not he is right, nor is it relevant to the question of "what are the political implications of his results".

    Ummmm... given that the only difference between a gas giant and a star is their mass, does this statement make any sense at all? If a planet has "enough mass to become a star at some point" then it will immediately ignite. If it doesn't, it won't.

    It's not like planets get a choice in the matter. It's not like Jupiter might get ambitious one day and decide to get lit.

    I'm sorry - could you show me *any* 1000 man corporation that burned through a trillion dollars over ten years?

    As for your 5 man figure - again, *what*? Let's say those five guys earn an average of $100,000. Benefits usually add 50% to the total so that's $150,000 each, a total of $750,000 for five men, not two million. Even if we assume another $50,000 per man-year for hardware, rent and so on we still haven't reached 50% of your figure.

    I had the same opinion as your boss - earlier versions of Office for Mac were horrible. But I had a chance to get Office X on the cheap (I was in Redmond for a class) and it is really quite good. The only problem I've encountered is that the VBA environment on Mac is missing some things.

    Office for Mac 2004 looks even better.

    When all the games are copies of older games - as they have been for the past few years - and it costs so much to develop a game that independents are shut out - where will the new compelling game come from?

    When I was a lad and schmuck with a C64 could get into the game authoring business. I did it myself. But how much does it cost to get a PS2 development kit.

    or thought about what he was saying, you'd realize that my point is *his* point - graphics have been good enough for several years now. No one wants or needs slightly more realistic fleshtones or ever more realistic explosions - how the hell would your average gamer know if an explosion was realistic or not?

    And that is the plateau he was talking about - we don't need better graphics and the next step, virtual reality, is still too clunky and expensive.
