If "art" is to produce some direct response from the human mind (such as pleasure or another emotion), humans have a big advantage over AI in that they are directly connected to a testing apparatus (their own minds) for whether their art works. This means a much faster feedback when testing ideas and producing the art itself. For this reason I believe humans will be much better at producing art than an AI.

Now if a full simulation of a human mind is available to the AI for testing the art, then it is all over. The AI is going to produce better art.

Also it is probably pointless, but an AI will be very good at producing "art" that produces responses from an AI.

I was basing this on early designs that are in geosynchronous orbit and thus remain over the same point on earth. Also they are only in Earth's shadow twice a year and only for a few minutes.

The receiver antenna is huge, larger than a solar field that gets the same energy. The main excuse for the cost is that it is constructed of simple wire mesh which is much cheaper than solar panels, though since the 70's the cost of solar panels has dropped like 10 times, reducing this. The transmitter is a phased array and it may be possible to build it so it is incapable of being focused to a weapon.

What I meant by anti gravity is that any cost estimates that make this comparable to a nuclear plant or any other traditional power source seem to be based on building the thing on the ground and then magically transporting it to orbit for free.

That does sound much closer than I thought.
I am assuming only a few hundred miles of "wall" need to be built to satisfy Trump's ego, but if that article is correct even this costs the same as an aircraft carrier when my guess was about 1/10. And if he really insists on a wall or fence everywhere that is not the Rio Grande it seems it would cost more. If an actual solid wall along the north shore of the Rio Grande is needed then it is going to cost a significant fraction. As pointed out the California high speed rail is a good indication of the main problem: the people owning the land will realize they have a windfall and demand exorbitant prices. Also if illegal immigrant labor is actively avoided in the construction it will be much more expensive.

  18. Re:Bullshit on Only Nuclear Energy Can Save the Planet (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

Yes you are right this is actually pretty much solar energy (for the heating part) stored in the ground.
I still think that most people think of heat from Earth's core when the term "geothermal" is used, and what you describe is "underground energy storage". The wikipedia article for Geothermal seems to only be about that. However on a few other searches I did see the word "geothermal" used for getting cold from the bottom of lakes, so there seems to be some precedence for that.

I'm no fan of Trump but the walls cost is much less than an aircraft carrier. The main complaint is that it is a waste of money compared to using it for other border enforcement, and that it results in a physical monument to Trump's ego.

  20. Re:Bullshit on Only Nuclear Energy Can Save the Planet (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

I think when they mentioned geothermal they meant the energy came from Earth's interior, not from some other source that was pumped into the Earth, which is what you are describing.
Such thermal storage is really useful and far cheaper than batteries. It can also"store" cold as well as her and help with air conditioning.

  21. Re:what about orbiting solar panels? on Only Nuclear Energy Can Save the Planet (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

The main advantage is that the orbital panel is not in the shadow of Earth half the time, not anything to do with the atmosphere. The idea is lucrudoiusy expensive however as you point out. If we had free anti gravity it might be possible.

Not sure what you are saying, but man can easily make a far more radioactive object than a natural object, including a similar-sized piece of the sun.

The reason the workers are exposed to less radiation is because of the shielding put around the reactor (overkill for normal operation as it is supposed to protect things in case of an accident), plus the fact that they are inside a building or ship and thus also shielded from more natural sources.

  23. Re:Nuclear workers on Cancer in America Is Way Down, For the Wealthy Anyway (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

How about due to increased cancer tests and screening of the workers? Also wondering if cancer gets you reassigned out of that area. The radiation released (unless the is an accident) is lower than natural sources so I don't think it is possible this is a direct result of radiation.
