There is a extra on the dvd for the film where RR ( heavens forbid i even attempt to spell his name ! ) explains how to create some impressive visual and audio affects for your own home movies ( the family friendly ones people ! ) . He gives a very clear and engaging discussion with example film of how to include visual affects , editing and audio additions to make the films more interesting. Id say he understands how open source benefits every on e since he is so willing to share his expertise and experiences.
As for Sin City... well as others have commented few Graphic Novels progress well to film but that does not preclude the opportunity that it can occur !
All the above answers are very appropriate, if your not planning to run windows applications on that same server.
Before all the trolls and flames kick in do allow me to illuminate my thread a little here.
Recently a client asked if it was possible to provide their corporate accounts package to their clients in a mechanism that enabled the software and data to reside at corporate head offices whilst clients accessed them remotely over the internet.
I investigated Citrix, Windows Terminal Services, X11 with KDE and Wine, Netraverse Win4Lin Terminal server and FreeNX.
As this was to be a corporate installation using Windows software the items to consider were
1. cost 2. on going support from Software supplier 3. Time and Effort to build the server and configure the network and services 4. Ability to rebuild the environment quickly
Looking at these issues I realised that Citrix was not immediately cost effective. As far as on going support from the software supplier went I was only assured support ( dont jump on EULA and other threads here ! ) for windows platforms. I could buy a off the shelf dell poweredge with 5 terminal services licenses for under 900 ukpounds. I could rebuild the environment from the ground up quickly in both unix and windows.
So this left me with Windows Terminal services as the most cost effective "initial" implementation. However file and mail services could be provided by a debian ( samba/Exim ) mix which would provide file access and file management tools whilst enabling the Windows Terminal Server to connect with domain authentication where appropriate.
Overall the set up and deliver time was short and the ongoing support is now minimal as to rebuild the windows box I will only require the recovery CD and I can duplicate the Debian box freely.
Theres been mention that WTS is slow compared to Citrix though ive yet to see any complaints from end users.
If I have one gripe it is that when the Dell was sold it was misleading to me that I would require seperate Terminal Service Licenses.
The real issue here is the "lag" between complete reliable windows support under Linux ( via Netraverse ) and the continuing undocumented and shared product changes that MS put into windows which impacts on Software developers.
Other issues I had was a concern that there is no guaruantee that a Windows Developer may not in the future utilise a DLL or COM object which is provided for or supported in many "emulation" packages. This risk alone is enough to justify using Windows TS for the time being.
I do note however that the software developers in question are showing the interest in providing Linux based Applications since the platform is rapidly maturing thanks to the development in KDE, Gnome and even to a lesser extent osX.
So thats my two pence. I would love to use a complete Open Source environment but it was not a simple problem and did not deserve a simple response.
im a tax payer ( well i pay the license fee for BBC TV ) so technically ive already paid for the Beeb to produce this. I wonder how it can be convulted to prove that if I download it then im not infringing copywrite !
Why, when for a change we got Battlestar Galactica before the yanks. That was unusual to say the least and quite refreshing. I do however wonder why it is our country is so keen to be in a close relationship with the States and yet is happy to accept the last season hand me downs of tv shows and films.
I can imaging that TV piracy would be reduced if we felt that it would be possible to watch the same seasons of Westwing, Battlestar, Rescue Me, Las Vegas, Gilmore Girls etc etc as the states tends to.
It seems wierd that my email and files can be sent through the net a within moments of me hitting the enter key but the Execs at Fat Cat studios still seem to send all the episodes by row boat across the atlantic !
Okay , im speaking here from the point of view of all UK shoppers, especially the experience of Tescos.
You go into the store, and are carefully guided and directed up and down and around the aisles your ears assaulted by many multimedia adverts selectively displaying the choice supplemented goodies in the aisle of your choice. Your constantly distracted from the choices your trying to make or the effort of finding the item on your list.
When complete your cart is pushed towards one of 30 ( maybe more ) tills. now you have to locate and define the correct till for your shopping choices. Basket only ? express lane ? wide till ? 5 items or less ? cash only the choices go on.....
Now finnally you unpack, repack , and wait to pay.... here, and here I say is where my blood really boils , is where you cannot possibly leave until youve answered the instore 20 questions before payment is taken..
[till clerk:] do you have a store card ? no would you like on e ? but you get x% off or points ? are you sure... okay okay ill take that throbbing vein as a no...
Would you like school vouchers, petrol vouchers, sports voucers, money off vouchers ? sir sir sir , no sir put down the bread stick......
How will you be paying ? cash ? oh dear thats a little difficult ive not been trained how to count !.. how about card ? okay good ?
would you like cash back ? do you have vouchers ? did i mention the store card ?...
okay do you know your pin, good ? could you enter the card pin note this fixed openly visible pin taking device enables the whole world to see you pin number ( please ignore the cctv trained to the overhead view of this till , yes it can see you pin also ! ). okay sir thanks for your pin... have a nice day ?
[end]
You know what I really want from a shopping experience ?
I go in , i put the items in the cart, i unpack, pack and pay and just leave... no questions, no blaring adverts no constant changing of locations and product layout and no annoying after purchase snail mail spam......
Could those stores possibly save on the bottom line if instead of finding new ways to get between the customers and the purchase they just let you buy and go ?
okay rant over, nothing to see here , move along now !
now as I see it you mean that we should have one manufacturer and model of car, vcr, phone, house and cookbook.
I agreem MS made it simple, they did this by good marketing. The same, if applied to those 10 distros, would mean the buyer would have more information and buying descisions to make a choice.
And lets stop suggesting that low tech is equal to low brow. many business leaders and intellectuals are very capable of making descisions and understanding the responsiblity of being able to choose.
I feel that maybe the open source needs to add Freedom to Choose to its incesant cries of freedom of source !
but your point was well made and understood, thanks.
well yes, and no... unlike windows.. its possible to choose a distribution of linux that meets and satifies your requirements.
Windows users ( and here im referring to those home computer users ) have XP ( home or pro ) its not really a choice either. Its currently the same for Mac users ( just Mac os X ).. Linux has diversified and gives choice. The user ( in the story ) had some choices to make.
When windows suck , the low tech users dont have a choice since they cant pick a dstribution of windows that better suits their requirements. And higher tech , more capable users, also dont get a choice as to which distro to pick.
Day 1:
I purchased the magazine which had Knoppix 3.x cd on the cover and booting my Father in laws pc ( windows , infected , dying ) proceeded to knx-hdinstall the operating system into the pc ( 3 yr old machine with router for internet connection ) . Completed the install of Knoppix Linux ( email configuration ) and rebooted. Showed In laws how to login , and mail and surf.
Day 2
Added In laws new digital camera....
Day 3 through 365 : hear nothing from in laws but praise for system that works, has not been inconsistent and lets them use their computer as they "expected" to be able to use it...
Day 366 : read story about user who makes poor purchasing descision and then complains about the product.
Day 367 : write sequel to story
okay the version of knoppix last year was old, but backing up their data to a usb flash drive and reinstalling to 3.7 the other day toook less than 10 minutes !
you git... you utter complete git you total absolute and complete bastard. . . . Ive now got the theme tune to the Bionic man inside my head now and It wont stop. To top it all i re read the artical and all i could see in my minds eye was frame stepped slow motion and the gchzk gchzk gczk boing boing judder sound effects playing in my minds inner ear ! im not going to sleep now.
Still at least it can claim to have a theme tune more memorable than flake , sorry Jake 2.0.
Maybe we should move from an Age rating system to a BIT rating System. This way you can only play games that are similar to your age. So if your 8 you play 8 bit, 16 you play 16bit, 32 - 32 bit etc.. . though I can se this system will need some tweaking.
[1] the thought is , if you think im serious... then i think the clue train missed your station.
yes , and paramount has did promise us no more Star Trek franchise..... nope wait a moment... buggerville, there it is... another Enterpise season......... how the heck did this beat firefly for renewal..
they recreated the universe [1], and gave it away to anyone who was interested !
so somehow the big news will be the big news and not how some amazingly large amount of unique and never before constructed data will be given away free and not copy writed !
my mind simply implodes like some thing out of a capital punishment device ina HHGTTG story.
My Cross pen, which is a Chrome Ballpoint. Is slim, stylish and the chrome matches the modern working evironment which I find myself in.
The lifetime mechanical warranty has recently been put to the test and found not wanting. Since I was able to hand it in to a local supplier who sent it away for repair, no charge.
The writting quality, weighting and consistency are fantastic and the balance of the pen makes long stretches of writting and signing and note taking a pleasure.
Invest in a pen, make it one you plan to keep for life and use it.
Yes but you do have to admit that there were at least no dupes for the Day. Hmmmmm maybe we can rename April 1st , No Dupes day for /.
For Spy Kids three that is !

So now we know who leaked who maybe they can find out why since where and when and what are clear...
okay ?

up in arms that this is yet another move, to take over yet another area of software which MS currently has no control over.
And if MS Control spy ware and Antivirus then they can set the precendence for what will be spyware and viruses !
how come this is released and no one is shouting blue bloody murder yet ?
or are the Anti Virus Share holders waiting for the big fat cheque to just go away in quiet ?

dont you mean Space is a Dyson ... I mean who says Vacuum ? or even Hoover ?
Come to think of it , we probably need to update some sayings for the slashdot era....
such as
Nature abhors a Dyson.

I do a Survey of Houses that get broken into.
I survey 100 Houses.
Of those houses 80 have windows.
the rest 20 have no windows.
Now. in my survey 30% of those houses with windows are broken into. but 60% of those houses without windows are also broken into.
This means I can say that only 30% of houses with windows are broken into compared to 60% of those without!
But lets look at those figures again.
30% of 80 is 24 Houses.
60% of 20 is 12 Houses.
So now in 100 Houses
24 with windows are broken into and
12 without are also broken into
Now when we look at those figures twice as many houses with windows are broken into as those without.
So now Ive gone from 60% insecure, to 50% more secure and the figures and the details have not actually changed !
And thats the simple maths.
