How about the government Organisations responsable for registering companies/charities etc. sign certificates. I would expect them to do a more through job of checking identitiy than verisign etc.
The LAN thing makes sense because players can tunnel a virtual LAN over the internet - I still think it's unacceptable though (along with the rest of steam) to make their priority stoping illegal copying, instead of making sure it works for everyone who payed for it.
The problem with flash is not that it's not useful, but that it's not an open standard, and doesn't integrate with webpages, instead it is either embededed in a box in the page, or it replaces the page.
