I don't care which side is involved, this is one of the most unamerican things you can do. This should be treated as treason.
This is another area where there needs to be a paper trail. These companies should be bonded and some sort of receipt should be issued to the voter that would allow one to either vote or allow them to file a protest and cast a vote after the fact. Any company found in fraud (anything above a normal error level) would loose their bond plus face criminal charges.
When I worked at a theatre the biggest pirate was the theatre manager. Every once in a while I'd see him in the projection booth copying the films via a mirror reflector. We once had to get a new print because he would cut out so many frames that the film lost five minutes - I have no idea what he was doing with the frames.
As an usher you could bet I wouldn't be wearing those goggles, either. It was bad enough doing the Will Rodgers collections and stopping people from bringing in outside food. For what they paid, let them do their own undercover missions.
The Underwriters Laboratories test electronic devices. Maybe certain fields should have their code reviewed and tested by an independent group before allowing it in the field.
I had the exact opposite experience with Dell. I had a problem with my CPU overheating. I contacted Dell email support with a very detailed letter of what I had tried and the results I had. Every response felt like a canned answer. I couldn't figure out if I was writing to a human or an auto-reply. We concluded that I needed to send my machine in for repair and that someone would contact me with the info. Several days later, no contact. I then called in to a tech who was very helpful, he saw no prior information about my email support. He arranged my pickup and I had the shipping box within a day.
I should also note that Dell's India support is horrible. You know when you're on it and it's like wadding through mud. The overall phone system has a lot to be desired. Sometimes I have been asked for the same information multiple times in a row.
They ended up shipping my laptop to the wrong location and it returned better but not solved.
Isn't this what the original Beatnik engine Thomas Dolby designed was supposed to do? I remember Dolby giving a lecture at a Music and Multimedia event in SF (around 1996). This was back in the CD-ROM days. Headspace would later dissolve and Beatnik looks to be more focused on phone ringtones.
It's often noted that there's a great potential for the Open Source community model to spill over into social/politcal movements. We have seen many examples to support this but we have yet to see a solidified political/lobbying effort by the OS technology sector to battle legislature like the DMCA. How has Red Hat been received in DC and do you know of or envision any single source of effort for political representation on behalf community as a whole (ala Surfriders)?
There are a variety of stock sound effect cds that can be used. Some are royalty free, others require license for certain usage (need to read the agreement).
Sound designers, like any other artist, enjoy making unique sounds that fit the usage exactly. It represents their craft.
Instead of looking for stock SFX cds. Try hooking up with a young Sound Designer looking to get into games. (try colleges/schools with music engineering programs - Berklee, Full Sail, etc). When I was in school, I would be more than happy to work for just a screen credit so I could put it on my resume.
In the current system, what happens when 324 people want to get into their cars and try to drive out? I would suspect that the wait would be even longer. You would then be relying upon several hundred people to cooperate. Plus you would have more emmisions with all the cars sitting idle.
Instead of getting up early Saturday, we just stay up later on Sunday to watch the Simpsons.
I can remember almost looking forward to going back to school because the networks would have special preview shows where they would announce their summer lineup.
It's just like the prize in the bottom of the cereal box. Seemed better we used to have to walk in the snow both ways to get it.
Missouri has had two quakes larger than any in CA. The first CA quake on the list is number 10. I feared earthquakes more in Boston. All that brick just waiting to fall.
Volcanoes and mudslides are avoidable. Don't live next to smoking mountains or under/above large hills.
Pricing isn't based on cost. Cost is only a consideration. If the market is willing to pay $20 per disc there is no reason to lower the price. Lower production costs means a lower point at which profit can be seen. Linux is promoted on the same principal.
The RIAA regime isn't going away until the need for it is diminished. I have yet to see any solution that addresses how to cover and recoup recording costs and promote/distribute the product. Until someone steps up, keep shelling out $20 or hire a lawyer.
If anyone wants to set up a discussion on how to do this I'd be glad to offer input. My background is Music Production.
write down, in a focused document, what you want to do, who will manage it, what resources you will need (a meeting place, teacher for x hours per week, etc), what resources you will need from outside the school and how you plan to get them. you might offer some suggestions for things the club could do for the school/community (manage web site, help manage learning center, build computers for local senior center, teach computers to elementary kids).
A straight-forward document with as much cost and time information will leave a good impression and be taken seriously (most adults can't write one). be open minded to comments and advice - even if they're wrong, show interest in what they say.
be prepared for resistence. you will encounter people who will want to see you fail - take a look at the messages in this list. people who succeed do not stop at 'no' or doubt. learn from the failures and try again.
the world is about getting things done. social engineering is vital in any profession. don't draw lines in the sand and create wars. make allies and get people to work for, not against, you.
i think it's great that you show the desire to at least start asking questions. if anything, this is a good exercise for the future.
My favorite was small rooms with open work areas. No marketing or sales allowed! The small rooms kept traffic and noise down. You could also hold group meetings without using a conference room. We used internal irc for conversations. This way you could scroll back if you missed something. We had various sized rooms for other meetings.
Since you mentioned pro level and audio, the only choice I could recommend is Digi's ProTools for the audio. It's a mature product and common to the majority of studios. As far as Mac or Win goes I think they're more stable on the Mac side (check their user forums).
For MIDI, your choices would then be to either use the built in MIDI sequencer in PT or to find a third party seq that interfaces with Digi's DAE. Logic and Cubase were always at the forefront. Again, check user forums and see what the feedback is like.
Depending on the music you plan to do you can check out what other similar artists are using.
My best advice is to get a stable setup and avoid upgrading it unless you really have to. I would dedicate a machine to doing only music and not fiddle with it. I've worked at studios and for a couple of these companies, the users with the most downtime were the ones who upgraded their OS or applications just because a new version was out. "If it's not broken, don't fix it!", especially in the middle of a project.
First, I know, it's a lame article.
But what is up with the poncho-esque wear on the guy with the tire iron? Does making him look cartoon hispanic make him more of a threat?
The less stuff you have, the less crap you have to carry to the next job.
I drive up to Canada from CA on I-5 and 97. Both of them have checkpoints but they're not always open. Checkpoint Locations

there's a better way to get a date.

Now I can get rid of all my remotes. No need to change channels, I just watch what I'm told to watch.
Leave it to our goverment to use dated terminology.
What we need now are new duck and cover drills.

Now we have a use for all the Oracle licenses we bought last year.

My understanding is that RedHat isn't about replacing Windows. Their focus has been replacing *nix servers and providing support contracts.
# For "Device URI" use "lpd://(hostname)/lp"
Found on http://homepage.usask.ca/~dkm560/713p.html via a Google search for "linux D-Link lpd queue".
And how would one define John Cage's 4'33"?

Drunk driving is a crime, and causes more financial harm than pirated movies, but I don't see alchohol being outlawed (again) anytime soon.

Fire. Well everything burns.

view it like a business proposal.

Cubes and offices just don't do it for me.
