    No (or at least not without ugly hacks). Use GTK 2 or QT >2. All the AA backend stuff should be automatically setup by any of the more modern distros (it works on Debian, anyway).

    I've never used Cinelerra (although I have used Broadcast 2000), but I doubt it can come near FCP for most purposes. FCP is an extremely complex program, and yet it manages to be both easy to use and powerful at the same time. Cinelerra doesn't look nearly as intuitive, and isn't nearly as powerful as FCP - no realtime effect rendering, no color correction, very few effects.

    Well, technically quality -1 is the lowest quality setting (averaging at about 45kbps), but I'm not sure if that's documented.

    People do use the code for ID games. They maintain it and make sure it runs on today's machines. They read it and learn about graphics programming. And some people do do great things with it - psdoom, for example.

    But unlike Quake 1, Blender isn't "anyone else's old code". It's code that was actively maintained until a little while ago.

    If you own the copyright, you can license anything however you want. Once code is GPL'd it can never be unGPL'd, but you can then take a copy of that code and release it under whatever other license you want, with whatever restrictions.

    Apt-get is capable of doing this, but it doesn't at the moment - thew infrastructure is not there to get every package signed. This is one of the things planned for sarge.

    There was an article about this on kuro5hin a while ago. I believe that Xiph has a private integer decoder, which they are seeking to license to hardware companies. After all, ogg is under the bsd license, and anyone can make their own proprietary implementation. Xiph has to survive somehow.

    If this is the case, I really hope Xiph can be more agressive about pitching this to hardware companies.

    PNG is an alternative to GIF. GIF is not JPEG. JPEG is not lossless. PNG is lossless. PNG is not lossy. JPEG is lossy. PNG is not a suitable replacement for JPEG.

    The clue-by-four is getting awfully worn out today.

    IE supports 1-bit PNG transparency, which is just as good as you can get with GIF. So, while PNG's not as good under IE as it is under Mozilla and friends, it's still better than GIF.

    Nope. Debian 1.x were named for Toy Story charcters ("buzz", "rex", "bo"). Debian 2.x were named for Toy Story characters. Woody will be Debian 3.0, so I assume the 3.x series will also be named for Toy Story characters.

    If I'm wrong, and you can find an official document saying so, please post a link.

    Never tried it with iTunes, but it works fine for me with Quicktime 5 and OS9.2. Just double click the .ogg file, and I get the standard "Pick an app to open this file in" window, with Quicktime as the only choice.

    If you have to do more than that, you've got it set up wrong. But I agree, it should be easier, and it definitely should be iTunes-integrated, if it isn't already.

    I don't think they've decided on a name yet. Sarge is one possibility I've heard mentioned.

    What happens when they run out of names? Will there ever be a Toy Story 3?

    Woody has X4.1 as default. Upgrading to X4 and unstable shouldn't be an issue, but it's probably easier if you remove X3 first.
