It's going to be a long, long time before "everybody" has broadband. There are many areas of the nation where broadband is simply not available for various reasons. Here in Alabama, only people in the bigger cities have access to broadband, and many of us who live in rural areas or smaller towns just don't have access to it.

Driving is not a privilege, it's a right. Since I pay to build the roads, I have the right to drive on them. However certain rights can be taken away from individuals who commit certain crimes - for example, convicted felons lose the right to vote.

In regards to my second comment: I think the first offense for drunk driving should be a stiff fine ($500-$1000) and possibly jail time depending on circumstances. Second offense should be considerably more severe, let's say mandatory 30 days jail time and one year suspended license. Third offense should be mandatory 6 months jail time and two year license suspension. Punishment for hurting/killing anyone while driving

There are some people out there who make mistakes and learn from them, and there are some people who make the same stupid choices over and over again. The first group drives drunk for the first time, pays stiff fines and possibly jail time, and never does it again. The second group does it more than once and pays the consequences.

Sometimes people don't learn, and they kill people as a result of their actions. This is sad, but the solution is not to punish first-time offenders too harshly.

You are so quick to take someone's car away from them, but here's a bit of info- in most places in the U.S. you *cannot survive* without a car. What, you expect someone to be forced to move halfway across the country because of a stupid decision that lost them the right to drive? Furthermore, who's going to move them there?

  13. Re:No on Big Brother In Your Front Seat · · Score: 1

And more importantly, the penalty for driving with a suspended or revoked license should be very severe, like a year in jail.

My license was suspended once without my knowledge because I failed to mail in some stupid form to the state after an accident I was involved in. I didn't find out it was suspended until I got pulled over one day. Are you suggesting I should have spent a year in jail for that?

I don't care if they can't get to work without a car; they can take a bus, taxi, ride a bike, or better yet move someplace that's not rural.

It's easy enough for you to sit on your ass and say that.

  18. Re:Tropospheric ducting on DEFCON WiFi Shootout Winners Set A Land Record · · Score: 1

55 miles is well within line of sight (LOS) range. There is no way they were using tropo scatter as it takes a lot more power than 600 mW to do a tropo shot (try 300-400 watts instead). Ducting, as you mentioned, only really comes into play in a tropo shot, not LOS. The reason I know all this is because my job in the U.S. Air Force involves working with TRC-170 tropo equipment.

For those not in the know, tropospheric scatter, or tropo, is the technique of bouncing a signal (typically UHF) off the troposphere and back down to Earth at some remote location (up to around 150 miles), beyond the normal radio horizon (maximum distance you can do a line of sight shot).

For what it's worth, these guys did pretty good, though their equipment wasn't too efficient. One of the pieces of equipment we use in the Air Force is the Tropospheric Satellite Support Radio, or TSSR, which is a small radio equipped with either a 1 foot or 2 foot dish. The 1 foot version can transmit up to 10 miles, the 2 foot version 25 miles. So I would hazard a guess that this same radio, equipped with a 3 or 4 foot dish, could hit the 55 mile distance if not more. In addition it will support four full T1s of data at any distance in its range.

But these guys did a great job working with the limited equipment they had. Especially being untrained. They deserve all the praise they've gotten.

Bullshit. I started typing in the 2nd grade, first hunt and peck then gradually progressing to faster and faster. When I finally took a typing class in 10th grade I could type at 114 words per minute with only one error. Granted it took me several tries and that was the best of the bunch, but I can easily type at 100-105 WPM with infrequent errors.

My technique is about as "bad" as any. I don't use the home row. The main fingers I use is the middle finger on the left hand, first finger on the right hand, occasional ring finger for keys such as 'a', 'l', ';', etc, left thumb for space bar, and pinkies for modifiers (shift, ctrl, alt, etc).

My typing teacher would scold me on my "bad" technique, but after I put down over 100 WPM and perfect accuracy with the keyboard covered up she never really got on to me again. There is no "right" way to type. There are proven techniques such as touch typing that are known to work, but there is no "right" and "wrong" way.
