I don't think it's really appropriate to declare any private exchange of information illegal, ever. I don't think it's really appropriate for the government to interfere much with what property a person can own and what they can do with it. It's all paranoia. If someone wants to have guns and bombs, maybe they should be watched carefully, but the key point is, have they caused any harm to anyone or anything else yet, by merely having those items?
By that line of reasoning, it should be ok for me (as a private citizen) to build and own a fully functional 100 megaton nuclear bomb, right? After all, I haven't done anything with it YET, so there's no harm right?
Following it out to its logical conclusion, we can also apply to this various terrorist groups and rogue states. They ought to be able to have NBC weapons too, right?
This is the same line of reasoning that lead to the death of thousands of innocent people on 9-11-2001. There are certain areas in which reactive (rather than proactive) action does not work.

Oh yeah... did I mention that it has a USB hub in it? Why the hell are we still shipping PCs with 12-year-old PS/2 technology?
Um, because PS/2 still serves a purpose?

As people we often take everything for granted. Unfortunately it's just too difficult to constantly be amazed by everything around us (take a moment to think about how a computer works, it's fucking amazing). But this article really does show this isn't the present but the future. We have rovers on another fucking planet.
I totally agree. When you get to thinking about this stuff in detail, it really will blow your fucking mind.
Damn, that sucks. Remind me never to move to the UK. I really enjoy having my pre-ban M-16 with 40 round clip, AK-47, high caliber rifles of various kinds, handguns (and concealed carry permit), etc.
To make nuclear a truly global energy source, 3rd world countries without training will have to start up their own facilities. Given that both the US (3 Mile Island) and the Soviets (Chernobyl) couldn't do this successfully, what makes us think that the world -can-.
Um, you need to read up on your facts. Nuclear energy has been used successfully for decades. Three Mile Island was not a catastrophe in any sense of the word. No radiation escaped and everything was contained. Chernobyl was a really crappy reactor design, but it was working just fine until the Soviet operators decided to perform a really dumb test, and disabled *all* safety mechanisms to do so. Combine that with no containment structure to contain the blast and you have a disaster.
Besides- how is staying cool in the summer and staying warm in the winter a waste of energy? I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from Alabama, and it gets hot and humid as fuck in the summer. I'm not about to sit around with no air conditioning.
I read the link you posted, and I still fail to see how "key portions of the Bill of Rights have been revoked". This man was captured in Afghanistan while fighting with the Taliban, which effectively makes him an enemy combatant. Thus, he has no rights except those under the Geneva Conventions. It doesn't matter if he's a U.S. citizen or not.
On a serious note: In a police state where the gov't can snatch anyone they want off the streets and hold them incommuncado, without charges and without access to a lawyer, we have no civil liberties.
Where's that?
To me, articles about such things are no surprise today. The only surprise is that the American people surrendered to fascism so easily.:-(
Parent is a troll, and the "karma be damned" line doesn't change that fact. Why is it that inserting a karma disclaimer is guaranteed to get you modded up?
Lawyers are the new American nobility. You are either a lawyer or a lawyer's subject. In the 21st Century, all Americans who are not lawyers will be forking over whatever money they have to pay for lawyers to defend themselves against other lawyers.
Lawyers will be living in mansions surrounded by the rest of us, who will toil endlessly, day and night, to earn our masters' legal protection.
Radio stations have to *pay* for all their songs, so no the music industry is not "giving them away". And no, ease of reception does not equal legality. I doubt you can legally receive Sirius satellite radio even if it's unencrypted.
Well I don't know about fire, but what about strength? Carbon fiber is light and strong, but it tends to rip and shatter instead of buckling like steel does. A small collision that would damage a steel ship could tear through the hull and sink a carbon fiber ship.
If you survive being embalmed, then you are one tough MF'er.
FreeBSD. Give it a try. :)
Troll indeed. Next thing you know we'll be modding Thomas Jefferson and John Locke down for "All men are created equal."
Wow, those two are slashdotters?!

Even if the price is within our reach, this piece of technology is going to be left to corporations and ultra rich people with lots of real estate.
Or people who live in places where land and large houses are not ridiculously expensive- i.e. Alabama.
Yes, it is done (at least here in Alabama). Off road diesel is red, and regular diesel is green. The off road stuff is significantly cheaper.

Because energy is cheap.

That was a joke.. dumbass. :)

Huh?
So are they implying that if you get a high score you are going to be arrested and/or have your home raided?
No.

I don't trust Bush. And I won't until his spinmeisters stop telling me that it's "OK" because black is white... because black is not white.
Racist!
Welcome to the Age of Lawyers.

Yes. Who cares about how old growth is? A tree is a tree, and all trees suck up CO2 regardless of age.
... but will it run Linux??

Does *every* post on Slashdot always have to turn into political mudslinging?
A trojan is something that is not what it appears to be. So yes, it's a trojan.
