... to see a 7 years old OS making the news because it will be extended to 10 years! It's like saying Ford extending the life of their 1965 sedan into the 2010. I mean it works, but I wouldn't define it as an achievement of human progress. Just because the model T was built for twenty years doesn't mean that all other innovation and progress came to a grinding halt.
People know how to use XP, and how to fix it when it's broken. Who needs an upgrade?
My computer generated diffusely-reflecting sphere sitting on a diffusely-reflecting surface looks exactly the same as my diffusely-reflecting sphere sitting on a diffusely-reflecting surface.
How very strange that on slashdot of all places no one noticed the article:
"Even then, to crunch through the remaining sets, he needed a workstation with 8GB of memory and around 1500 hours of time on a Q6600 CPU running at 1.6GHz."
So they had to underclock this thing to get in phase resonance with the cube or what?
The Intel Q6600 is a nice little number that runs a 2.4Ghz out of the box.
Great, so now if my router goes down my boss won't say "The internets gone!" Instead he'll say: "Holy Fuck! There's a giant squid crawling out of a rip in space-time near the water cooler!"
Wouldn't it be great if we could pay our farmers to grow crops (Hemp) as opposed to paying them not to grow crops. Bio-diesel could revolutionize american agriculture, reduce our dependance on outside oils.
On the down side, will the infrastructure changes be cost effective? With Hydrogen Fuel Cells turning the corner, the possibility of making our energy from water and using it across the boards (Homes, Cars, Shipping, ect.) might level the playing field a little and let the good parts of this whole free market shine through.

Organic LEDs are luminescent plastic semiconductors with the theoretical potential to replace LCDs, CRTs and other display technologies through greater efficiency, easier production, more physical flexibility and lower cost.
Are there any environmental changes with these monitors, personally I always make an effort to shop greener and if I could avoid purchasing a CRT in favor of something that would biodegrade nicely well WOO HOOO! I'd be making planters out of my old monitors.
Really I can't see whats so breathtaking about an Apple emulator, well don't get me wrong it's a nice trick....but wouldn't it be far MORE interesting if say somebody compiled that little Darwin kernel for x86 and got OS-X to run NATIVE on it? Emulators are just too damn slow. The flip side of this is Virtual PC which works quite well but does not touch the performance of any Win box.
The standard reply to the "I want OSX on Win" plea is that Apple will never do it as it would kill their hardware sales. However I don't think this is the case: Just look at Sony, they are aimed at the same market as apple : High end Multi-media. And their PC's are just as, if not more expensive, than Apple.

The new chip has several key bennefits, which include the use of synchronous serial interface when connecting to a host CPU, low-power consumption enabling long time operation with dry-cell batteries, and a 0.22 micron low-leakage process. The package is quite small at only 7x7(mm).
Just me or does this seem like the perfect chip for a subdermal implant. Seriosly, stick one of these babys next to a pacemaker and you can control your heartrate via the TCP/IP or encrypt the signal and have law enforcments firearms disable themselves in the hands of criminals (ala Judge Dredd) Coupled with a proper set of sensors soldiers vital stats could be relayed to a central command unit without bulk transmiters, or just one transmitter (Aliens (1986)
Ok, so this is a little embarrasing but with the amount of games that were distributed for the PS1 that are now filling up landfills, not to mention the industrial waste from producing all those cds/dvds eliminating the packaging/disk/instructions might not be so bad, heck I'm going to go play my PSP in a TREE damnit! OTOH, eliminating the retail side of sales will cut all us little guys trying to make a buck slingin' games to pimply kids straight out. But I am not sure you are sufficiently informed on the nature of our great United States we are a Democratic REPUBLIC and the although I agree Condorcet's method may remove some of the "You wouldn't want to throw your vote away" syndrom that influences so many voters there is still the electoral college and even worse, as the last election demonstrated, it just doesn't matter.
I agree with you on one point: How we count our votes does not equate to voteing reform. We must fundamentally change the methods used in the election of our leaders if this is to be a truely free Democratic Republic. Now try and explain that to the people who have the power to change it. They are the ones the current system put into power eg: the least likely to suppot change.
