The tool source and video compressor will be out next week. This will include source q3data, q3map, q3asm, q3radiant, our version of lcc and the executable for the video compressor.
John Carmack has been working on the GLX project for a few months.. And when Quake 3 shipped he said he wanted to take some time off to work on some free software projects, so there may be some truth to this. This seems like a John Carmackey thing to do.
Actually it's not that hard.. go into the Windows\System directory, find a system dll (for example, kernel32.dll), right click it, click properties, and then click on the Version tab in the window that pops up.:)
I went to some frisbee throwing tournament in San Diego (where I live) in '92.. some radio station that had a big Penguin as their mascot (I have to wonder about their inspiration:) attracted the attention of several 6 year old kids... They started kicking the Penguin and stuff.. one of em kept spitting on the little mesh screen that the guy in the suit was breathing through.. At the time it seemed funny.
huh? I didn't even see it:). set your threshold to one (unless of course you moderate), you don't have to read those eyesore posts by angered ms employees!:) just a thought. I know other people do it on here..
Hopefully the ID folks will realize that if they want to stop cheating. Preventing cheating in the client alone is never going to work. It will of course take some more work on their part, but its been done correctly before and I'm sure they can do it too. If they're smart they'll embrace this and work with the open source community to get it fixed.
I'm not sure I agree with that... Preventing cheating is pretty much a nonstop battle. That's why development on QuakeWorld pretty much halted, Zoid (Dave Kirsch, responsible for maintaining QuakeWorld client and ports of Quake to other platforms) just got tired of working on fixing loopholes and then seeing another 10 pop up.
The whole reason the video game/easy access to gun spacegoat is so popular is for a couple reasons: (1) 95% of the general public does not play these games (Doom, Quake, etc.) so because of this, it's easy to say "oh, yeah, it's Doom" even though the only description they have of it is someone who has also obviously never played it, or played it very little. (2) I really do think it may be because of bad parenting.. If the child is never taught that murdering or acts of violence are wrong, that is a definite reason (in my opinion) why someone would be more likely to do it..
It's much easier to blame violence on something people have never heard of than to think that maybe the nuclear family of America is breaking down.. Scapegoats are the perfect remedy for pesky reality.
They sad that only "Linux buffs" should install Slack.. I figured it out no problem. And I don't know anything about Linux. I mean, I can login, start x, and recompile the kernel if I have to, but that's about it.:/ Installing Slackware isn't hard and whenever a magazine like that uses words like "hardcore Linux buffs" to describe the people that should attempt a Slack install, it makes me think they know less about Linux than me, which is scary.
Interesting. I don't see why that would be... each program just loads the file into memory and then it's done with it until, for example, you save the file.
I was using a text editor to write a program and then I would go into visual c++ to compile the file, and visual c++ would say "the file has changed, would you like to update the file?" or something like that. But I could still have the same file open in two programs.
I don't think the problem you were having was Microsoft's fault.:/
Microsoft will be under fire for the next 5 years from various sue-happy organizations... "Windows crashed and my online girlfriend and I were seperated for 10 minutes... I'm sueing for *emotional distress*!", etc.
If Microsoft lawyers' know what's good for them, they'll settle, and settle now.
Unless this kid is some k-rad genius, he can't tie his shoes, he can't read or write, he couldn't tell you what 2 + 2 is to save his life, how can he even understand.. say.. what a string is? most 3 year olds wouldn't be able to tell you that it's an array of characters. oh well, 'go w/ the flow'.
I believe the original owner/president guy of the Cray computer company (I believe he passed away a few years ago) toggled in an operating system in octal. feer.
For one thing, UT runs slow. I pretty much demand 60 fps... and Quake 3 seems way more tweakable. I've pretty much been able to triple my framerate. Here's some settings that'll make you happy-happy (this is my autoexec.cfg):
For one thing, q3test has been played like crazy for about the last 4 months. There's easily 10,000 people playing it 5 hours a day. When you play that much, the Linux approach of the "1,000,000 eyes" method shows its strength. That's why Q3 is going to completely obliterate Unreal Tournament (besides being optimized like hell).:)
Bill Gates was too dumb to figure out how to implement the floating point arithmetic in his BASIC interpreter so he thought he'd call up Pauly Boy and get him to do it.
q3 demo has quite a few improvements over q3test 1.08.
-new map: q3dm1. flat, no ups or downs, for newbies, I hate it, but that's just me. (q3test1 renamed to q3dm7, q3test2 renamed to q3dm17, q3tourney renamed to q3tourney2) -bots. 6 of them. 5 skill levels to choose from. ranging from wondering what all the pretty lights are about to.. lamer with a zbot. (it's funny to watch them try to hit you with the gauntlet from the other side of q3dm17 (q3test2)) -too many little things that you'll notice and go "ah" to list.
Rabid Linux users flaming developers/industry people for shabby/no Linux support could seriously fsck the effort up. Here's an email that a quake 3: arena site got from a Linux user that thought the website was part of id software (maker of q3:a):
From: [linux "user"]
To: [website staffperson] Subject: linux support and your death.
I'm outraged by the lack of linux support in the coming q3.
IT will not be toleranted. Releasing a linux verison of a game after xmas, when the windows version gets release before xmas is a sin and a design to f[this is still a family site] up our market share.
IF you continue on this road of action, people will be angry with you.
IF you continue you will learn a life long enemy in me.
Looks like fun...

The page said it's coming out in 16, 32, and 64 meg versions. 64 megs is enough for 8-9 normal quality mp3s. :/

The sad thing is, I knew that from memory.

That it's very in the interest of Air Traffic control (in the US) to be Y2K compliant. I think the same goes for the military.
While we're discussing airlines, many airlines are cancelling up to half of their flights on New Years Eve Day...

Quake 3 is *not* buggy.

Hmm, the day id announced gold(yesterday), JC updated his .plan with 10 bug fixes. :)
This pretty much is a demo, the bug fixing stage was q3test versions 1.05-1.08.

Heh. Well. Yes. :)
.plan updates (archives at http://www.fingershack.com/ finger/index.php3?update=1121) for info on various bug fixes.

of course, lots of bug fixes, and a menu layout change. read john carmack's
So. now you know.

I don't think it's possible to act that stupid and get in to Microsoft.
For you wise guys out there, Microsoft is lazy, not stupid.

See what I mean?
