MMX was introduced back near the end of the lifetime of the original Pentium. It was a set of SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) instructions for integers (I think they're 64-bit integers, not sure). SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions) is a set of SIMD instructions for floating-points (128-bit, I think?). If I recall correctly, the registers for SSE are referred to as XMM registers, or MMX backwards. As for SSE2, I have no idea.

  8. Re:Server-side fix? on AOL Instant Messenger Remote Hole · · Score: 1

This would be an easy fix. The exploit works when one user sends a game session request to another user. This request is sent through the server. The server can then do a cursory check of the request to see if it's validly encoded. If not, throw it out. Thus, you have your simple server side fix.

Would be genetically engineered cyborgs. I mean, genetic engineering is a much bigger issue than it was when T1 or T2 came out. So my guess is that the Terminatrix is going to be some sort of human genetically engineered with cybernetic enhancements, while we're at it. But then again, the article said that the Terminatrix has shape-shifting abilities, so maybe not.

What about inertia of the industry? When something like Windows has an established user base, people are reluctant to switch because they have friends who use Windows who can fix a problem when it comes along and because they see that Windows works well.

When people use closed/shared source applications, there is an inertia that makes them less likely to use open source alternatives. This is sad, but true.

Would this hardware be patentable? Possibly. However, you cannot patent Pythagoras's Theorem. The implications of this, I'm not quite sure. However, it is something to think about.
