So much for my mod points in this discussion...and no I'm not smoking crack, I just have rather disjointed thought processes.
Anywhoo,
I just hope LOTR is not going to turn into something like the Aliens series where: You have the original. Then the directors cut Then the Extended Edition Then the Anniv. Edition Then the Extended Special Edition.
Quite frankly, everything after the directors cut just made Aliens into an even longer movie.
The thing about the Directors Cut version it *The movie made *PERFECT* sense if you'd seen the first one.
I got LOTR as a gift --*coff*bullshit*coff*-- for my son, knowing, that this extended edition was coming a few more months down the road.
When I have extra income (/sound of coffee being snerked thru noses) I might get this set...or, heck, borrow it from a friend who does. I've got a few who were waiting for *this specific* edition.
(/Off topic whining) What was it with the flamebait mods today? I got one for *my* opinion + experience...{shrug} (/off topic whine off)
On topic: Excellent to get a JFS on OSX, finally. I let out a "whoo-hooo", but what do you want from a geek. Eh?
The only thing no one has considered/mentioned is that to gain that speed hit back, you'd probably put in a faster scsi drive, right?
Some people might recall that Adaptec has/is/was dropping mac support (boo!) and while I have an ATTO card in my Mac attached to an 18G Cheeta, well, OS9 does quite well on it...OSX does a less than thrilling job {speedwise}. So far everything seems to point to OSX or its SCSI/ATTO drivers. (bummer)
Insult to injury is: {oversimplification warning} From a storagereview.com roundup says, in effect: IDE ='s write performance (workstation/home use} SCSI ='s Read performance (server/raid) Makes sense when you think about it, so it might be a good idea to get an IDE raid card and do a raid 1+0 to minimize or cancel out the speed hit and keep some integrity.
With so many "Good Things (TM)" coming to OSX, the computing world is going to get very interesting, I think.
(/me crosses fingers for Power4 Macs...now THAT would be a PowerMac!) .
Reply or correct, please. Don't mod down what is *my* general experience...sheesh.
Funny thing is: I realize I should have added it is the same thing with SSE1/2 in the p3/4 series... it is there and used in Q3, as I recall, but Altivec is not used in the Mac version at all.
I ought to know, I waited for the optimized version to come out of beta for over a year.
IBM has resisted adding Altivec to its version of PPC, and Apple depends on it heavily.
True and kinda false: True, IBM resisted mainly because Altivec has prevented scaling of processor speed {i.e. the 18Months at less than 500Mhz G4's) until better fabrication came around.
IBM can *design* wonderful chips (hence the Power4) but can't fight the stubborness of Steve Jobs or the incompetant fabrication of Motorola.
And...
Apple *markets* Altivec heavily, but does not depend on it that much. There are *less* than a dozen programs with optimizations for Altivec, if that many.
Heck, the Quake 3 verson got mothballed because it was too damned difficult/buggy to program for. (I don't even want to attempt to mangle G Devine's first/last name).
"In Theory" Altivec was a Good Thing...In Practice...IT SUCKED ROCKS.
Recently I had to setup an ArcIMS (IMS = internet map server, or as I call it "Incomplete Masochistic Software") on a Windows 2000 Server.
You have your choice of IIS or Apache, and guess which one I chose? Yep, Apache.
After testing the box out, I cleared the logs (access/error) at about 3pm and left it running. Next day, I discover that less than an hour later a single IP address (204.xxx.xxx.xxx) hammered on it for 300+ hits with *both* codered and nimda and (the same ip or one in the range, I don't recall) hitting all of the default IIS directories looking for *anything*.
after DNUG's there will be the Palladium Users Groups, which will have many members the first meeting but few if any the second meeting after all of them are arrested for copyright violations for trying to listen to their MP3's while programming.
Really easy, instead of using Hotmails spam filter, I use thier "sorting filters" (or whatever they are called) and filter it all to your junkmail folder.

This is now on the point of being abandoned because so many DVD manufacturers have deliberately undermined the system.
