This isn't a "code review" -- it's a short monograph (with Quicktime movies!) that talks about how Id got DOOM working well on the iPhone. A "code review" is, well, a critique of code, and the style, correctness, and efficiency, thereof.

It's funny you mention science and the Washington Post. They recently revamped their weekly science/health section, and in all honesty, it's really great stuff now. There is a wide range of well-reported articles; I don't recall ever seeing anything like it in a newspaper before.
An astonishing fraction of research "results" from China are just plain made up. No wonder they're so prolific! I don't doubt that they will eventually make significant scientific contributions as a nation -- they're 20% of the world's population, after all -- but they're going to have to clean up their act before the global scientific community starts to take them seriously.
To everyone posting to say that "It should be a website!1!!":
It is a website, of course -- or rather, all this info is already available on NASA's website. NASA has a fabulous web presence, and has for a long time.
The iPhone app just makes selected information available in a nice form-factor for mobile. Could this have been done as WAP pages, so Blackberry/Android/whatever users could see it? I guess, sure, but it wouldn't be as nice as the iPhone app. It's an experiment, guys. Not wasteful, not elitist. Lighten the hell up.
Quake had no plot, at least not one that made any sense or was original in any way. It was the multiplayer which made it such an incredibly successful phenomenon. Folks these days might forget what the old days before the Intertubes were really like; being able to blow your friends up for the first time was just awesome.
> I don't think it's necessarily that people aren't into "real" news, I think this is one of those things that impacted a lot of people around the entire world all at the same time.
I understand what you're saying, but the thing is, it really didn't actually "impact" hardly anybody. The guy could sing and dance, and now he's dead. Turn the page, y'all. There are hella more important things to search for.
They don't want to restrict access, because calling those premium numbers doesn't actually cost them anything extra. They just want to make sure that whatever ridiculous amount they bill you, you're going to be able to pay. They're saving on legal/collection fees, not trying to make sure that their nonexistent "expenses" are covered.
It's not?
The "old world" is Europe.
The "new world" is the Americas.
The "third world" is everything else.
Don't like it? Tough.
But yeah, nobody uses these terms much anymore. We say "developing countries" instead of "third world."
Except that when you're facing away from the screen, the camera doesn't see the LEDs, so in fact, the machine can tell the difference.
Another thing no poster has gotten so far is that the WiiMote can compute z-access position using the distance between the LED images -- as you get closer to the screen, the lights get farther apart.
I realize that the system described in the article can do more, and do it more simply -- but people shouldn't underestimate what's possible with the existing hardware. There's more there than meets the eye.
Well, the queen doesn't actually do anything, does she? And the prime minister doesn't have anywhere near the authority or responsibilities that the POTUS does. The President is literally the Commander in Chief of the military; he goes incommunicado and before you know it you got Alexander Haig firing missles at Kazakhistan.
it keeps a lot of otherwise useful money locked away where it can not influence anyone, nor make more money.
Oh yes. Because we all know that banks take the money we deposit, exchange it for pennies, and lock them in big piles in a closet.
When you get a chance, dust off that old encyclopedia in the attic and look up "Savings and Loan Association."
+1 Funny

Hey, did you see a man with a briefcase?
That's my reaction, too; I appreciate the concern, but I think your opinion of your own uniqueness might be a tad overblown.
Oh god I wish I had mod points!

No private corporation in China does anything without the express blessing of the Chinese government.
This is quite different from the system in the US, in which the government does nothing without the express blessing of a private corporation.
It's been years, and I still chuckle when I see a reference to Microsoft's UAC. They couldn't have chosen a more appropriate name for it!

And you sound like a selfish idiot.
200 milli-Angstroms? That's a damn tiny house...

Why is this modded "informative" -- there's a link in the story, and it states where the story comes from!

This bullshit is exactly what's wrong with our entire capitalist system.
