    What's wrong with Delphi?
    It has the modularity, strong type checking and simple sintax to help you start learning.

    I beleive you could download version 1 (16 bit?) for free - but Im not sure.

    Decide between Explorer or Mozilla/Netscape, do not code for both and if they give you trouble with it say that it would take 3 times longer, at least!!! Do not back down, don't worry. They will either accept it or you would be working in a much better place.

    oh and...

    Always make sure you have savings for at least 3 months rent and you will be all set.

    Don't get pressured by women, just tell them you love them and don't get tired in explaing why it is too expensive...

    I agree but until there is a consesus not only on standards but on what works on multiple browsers you are forced to fall back on bad habits.

    I have been trying to put together a master detail page that at least WORKS on both IE and Mozilla. Right now I'm stuck on scrollable tables:
    - Use the TABLE tag or not?
    - What exactly will enable scrollbars? (DIV, SPAN, IFRAME?)
    - Where to put icons and who is going to handle them (CSS or Javascript)?

    I just about exhausted my options to comply with standards and Im just in hack mode trying to make things work.

    Every time I read the reviews at amazon I summarize how many positive comments vs. how many negative.

    If a negative comment makes sense and could be corroborated by another negative comment then all the positive comments are suspect if they outnumber by a dramatic ratio.

    (surely this is off-topic) ... is by using a technology that can be cracked by a teenager and be replicated/copied around the world. And instead of fixing the technology they buy legislators to make laws to come down on this kid and make him an example to the world.

    Unless I like to invest (and trust) in mafia type industries, I would place my money somewhere else.

    I feel obligated to mention Mexico City's subway. It is one of the most extensive in the world... and I bet the cheapest too. At rush hour in some stations passengers are divided into women and men, for decency and security since you are really packed in the cars. Although you are not pushed and packed by a subway worker like they do in Japan.

    Currently China is the fastest growing economy in the world. All helped in part by foreign investement and by becoming the world's manufacturing centre.

    Although is hard to verify but at least the chinese like to think that.

    A bank doesn't have their production & accounts servers connected to the internet. They do have web servers which interface with other internal servers that have transitory information.

    Batch procedures take care of saving and balancing all daily transactions.

    Banks get audited, and I beleive (at least in the US) if the government finds out that a bank is risking its servers through the internet they will make them pass a really bad time (and still the public wouldn't know about it).

    That's exactly right.

    Profit/greed will become the whole point and technicalities with different OSes are background noise. After all, Business executives wouldn't understand or even care the faceoff between MS and Linux.

    It's a matter of time until we see MS react and dance to a different rythm :-p

    In a way this makes sense. A big corporation will not only (if at all) consider ease of use at the GUI level to determine the right OS to save costs and get the job done.

    It is normal for a big corporation to have standards and procedures and if they have them to get things done in windows they can certainly have them to do stuff with linux. As long as it can be proven that Linux can do the same tasks with the same amount of effort (but different knowledge and mindset) then the last decision will be about cost.

    To pay Microsfot for support or have it's own support staff becomes irrelevant. What is important is the independence from the policies of ONE vendor.

    Right now these options STILL are not as clear to many CEOs or even CIOs. With time and with improvements similar to Xandros will force Microsoft to change their ways (and as we have seen before, they will).

    I rather register and pay the site (and I do for some I really like) than to just doing exactly what they say.
    • What about having any option at all?
    • How many popups is the site going to bombard me with?
    • From how many sites are the popups coming from?
    • Should I just sit and watch whatever garbage I am forced to watch, on tv I can switch channels, on my browser I have to wait and watch them load.
    • Popups were intended as modal windows to replicate the behaviour from what is used in applications
    • Every time I register to something I make sure I opt out of everything concerning newsletters, advertisements, news, etc.

      So, If the site author really thinks people should watch their popups then I would look somewhere else.

    Obviously is the secret formula in his Dippity-Do! gel.

    Resists heat, wind, dust and harsh uv rays. Of course each double-0 agent has his own special formula. The Mega-hold formula is to be used carefuly because his hair may become hard as nails, something you don't want to wear when being with that cute informant/spy.

    I still don't understand the fascination for Robots in Japan.

    It is obviously part of the japanese culture to contemplate a robot as an ideal solution for this sort of problems and that serious money is invested in reaching that goal. It's also clear how that is not the case in western cultures, just look at the amount of "Funny" posts on this topic.

    Now if I would be contemplating having one I see two big problems right away:
    -How is it really going to navigate in the mess I have in my appartment, hell I can't.
    -How is it supposed to stop intruders when this robot is the single most expensive thing I have in the house! (I bet is not cheap)

    The only explanation I can come up with is that is yet another toy for the japanese high class.

    IMHO
