  1. So they say they'll match the tailpipe emissions of an electric vehicle using a combustion engine? Man, those batteries sure output a lot of CO2 and particulates, don't they?

I do expect somebody to bring up some stats that show that the manufacturing of said electric car and for the production of electricity for it produce loads of emissions, and more damaging than what the combustion engines output, but there's one crucial difference to people (even if not for the planet): cleaner air in the cities. Then we can focus on making those processes better on site. Can upgrade them more quickly than renewing the whole electric vehicle inventory.

The great thing about Windows is that it will do exactly what you tell it to do.

Does it? That's great, but when I deal with Windows I usually have a hard time finding a way to tell it to do stuff to begin with.

It's probably down to being used to a Terminal in Linux and all my patterns go like "open a command line, type a bunch of commands for a few minutes, job done", but having to google how to enable ping responses in Windows doesn't help its case.

My default policy on Windows is to avoid it; because if I don't I have to put too much work in before I can do any work. And it's not like once I put that work in I'm all set. I'll have to do that on a regular basis. I do not want to put even more work and capital into various Microsoft certification programs either - although feedback is that they do help reduce all that pre-work a lot.

If I were just playing games I probably wouldn't mind Windows because each game is like its own distro and all I do is click an icon to boot it up, but beyond that... no thanks.

  15. The state can intervene to fix competition on Nearly Half of Colorado Counties Have Rejected a Comcast-Backed Law Restricting City-Run Internet (vice.com) · · Score: 1

I'm sure some minimal government supporter out there already exploded and graffitied "socialism" on the idea, but the state should be able to intervene and fix competition even if that means starting one or more state-run companies. The state-run companies should be privatised by IPO after a while, and the state should deny merger requests on competition grounds if necessary. Let's call it "Investment of last resort". It is possible that just hinting of starting such a company would make incumbents scramble for improvements, because "you can't let the commies win".

Even the Borg have only Trans-Warp conduits to help them move faster.

If they still have Spore Drive in season 2 they're mad - otherwise they'll have to declare it an "alternate universe" story, and then watch how everybody suddenly understands why the Klingons look like a totally different species.

  24. Actually, scratch that. It looks like you can get a slim laptop with huge battery life (and probably performance too) these days. Dude... I've been living under a rock. Last time I googled for "long battery life laptop" they defined "long" as 4-6 hours.

  25. [...] laptops as thick as old laptops with a nice big honking battery

Would a chunky Dell XPS fall into that category?

You could set off on a trip and not need to recharge until you reach your destination. You could game for an entire flight. You could forget about hauling around external battery packs. You could stop worrying that the razor thin plastic is going to crack open. Nah, thin and light, gotta be trendy.

I don't have a Dell XPS, but I've seen one once, and did a google on battery life just now and it seems to fit the bill, more or less - depends on how long your flight is, really.

I'm mainly where a Dell XPS stands in regards to your wish, as a benchmark.
