  1. Paid reviews on Should You Trust Website Customer Reviews? · · Score: 1

According to Mike Daisy, who worked at Amazon.com for 3 years, he actually was paid to review toys. This does not mean he was paid to review toys favourably, just to review them.

Perhaps Gale is a professional reviewer. Perhaps she's also manic when she writes her reviews, too. That would explain the constant 5 stars.

On a side note, his book gives a very funny account of the insanity that is(was?) Amazon.com during the boom.

Oh, and don't mod me down, I really want to know.

Ah, yes. But can it post submissions to /. without glaring spelling errors? That'll be the day.

  7. Deutsche Telekom problems on Myths about Internet growth · · Score: 1

Around this time DT became public, or less privatised is better to say. There was a huge public offering in Germany and almost everybody invested in it. These huge debts and the burst have sent the stock price plummeting with no sign of recovering soon. Lot's of people lost big money on this deal.

But the cultural differences still shine through: Worldcom lies about demand, DT tries to find other sources of revenue.

  8. Argh! on Linux Beer Hike Goes to Ireland · · Score: 1

I time it perfectly: Study in Germany for 8 weeks that coincide with the Linuxbierwanderung and maybe pick up a little German (or two) while I'm there...

  11. Speed v. Latency on 10-Gigabit Ethernet Standard Approved · · Score: 1

Most clustering applications depend on the latency of the network, not the overall speed. A majority of the applications written do not require massive amounts of data to be transferred in order to distribute jobs to the nodes.

What is optimal is a low-latency network protocol that can quickly pass jobs to other nodes. If you're into clustering applications that require the movement of large amounts of data AND want low latency, then products like Myrinet are a good choice. Be prepared to shell out some cash for it, though.

  14. Avoiding Hype on Review: Harry Potter · · Score: 1

It's been impossible to avoid the hype on this film. Even if you avoid TV, the whole web has been bursting with bits, ranging from eBay to CNN.com.

Funny, I didn't see any hype for this movie. I didn't even know it existed until the /. post. Of course, not actually living in the US can be a handicap. Or blessing, now that I think about it from the media hype-standpoint.

  15. Re:Xerox did not have it on The Waning of the Overlapping Window Paradigm? · · Score: 1

Xerox did have overlapping windows. Atkinson was trying to develop clipping, which is only constructing the part of the window that is not covered by another, as opposed to constructing the entire window, and then covering it with another overlapping window. Clipping therefore saves considerable processing time. Atkinson thought Xerox had developed the algorithms for clipping, but in actuality had not.

  16. Other subjects on Computer Books For A Library? · · Score: 1

Don't forget to put books in for the non-computer user, not just for sysadmins and computer science majors. Not everyone is looking for computer programming help. I suggest even putting some "Beginning Windows" books. There will be people looking for this information, too. A public library is a place for information, even unpopular (or "evil") information.

Since when was "obtaining music or video" online considered "innocent" by the government? Check it out. It's on page four of the report. :)

The guidance counsellor said it "was against policy and there was nothing she could do."

    At least I'm free, now.
