Ads do not have to be updated every second. If the rumor is true that they are charging more than $1M to become an advertiser, we aren't looking at L.C.D. ads that try to latch on to the hippest keyword of the moment, but a few advertisers looking for a higher-end market.
That could be updated when the phone syncs, or when the phone is on WiFi.
Very few software companies support free cross-grading of apps from one OS to another - about the only large company I ever remember supporting that were Macromedia who usually put Windows and Mac executables on the same CD, but that's stopped since Adobe bought them up.

I browse the web all the time with ClickToFlash (you have to click on a flash element to load it) and it is glorious. I have a few sites that are whitelisted (hulu, mlb) but everywhere else loads only the flash that I specifically request.
Pages load faster and I haven't seen a motion ad without looking over someone's shoulder since I started.

any app can be rolled out with iphone/ipod touch support, but there isn't a requirement. iPad specific apps will exist.

Which is precisely why they aren't allowing multitasking. Consumer pressure is for a stable platform with long battery life.
