  1. Re:More eye-candy to suck up govt bucks on DARPA Funds Internet Tracking Scheme · · Score: 1

I totally agree with you. Most govt projects are not going to go anywhere at all. Their reward system is also set up to incentify those who do not take risks. Hence pensions are not risked and career ending moves do not occur.

I recently heard a story about the agent who found the explosive in the trunk of the terrorsist who was trying to bomb LAX in the year 2000. Instead of being rewarded for her vigilance, she was transferred out of the seattle are to east bum hump montana. She had to sell her house else risk being fired and losing her pension and or pay grade.

When I hear about those government agency projects i generally scoff because they are eithe a) vapor ware. or b) collecting dust because they were purchased just to blow a budget.

SLG admins + managers are in it for the pension. Risk usually does not bode well for those who are lookin for security and retirement after 25 yrs of service.

For Newport News this looks like he was able to make a mark for himself and got lucky. Most admins and managers that I talk to do not have this luxury.

To advance and therefor get a bigger pention they need to be able to pass on the torch.. Open source is "too complex" to pass the torch on to risk averse admins and managers.

Finally; 'free' does not look good to those who do not spend their own money (they spend our money). You need to spend budget to get budget.

Personally I think that ease of use and simplicity need to be priority #1 to get Open Source into Government.
