Hopefully gentoo will make some kind of application to automate the building of these things things with other games.

  8. On the subject of PVRs... on How Could TV Survive Without Commercials? · · Score: 1

in the last day or so i started a new side project: making my own Personal Video Recorder in linux using perl and my tv tuner. It will simply be something for me to do with v4l, but it will have features that are quite tivo-like: skipping commercials using some time synching methods (COMMERCIALS DRIVE ME INSANE), searching for and recording tv shows based on a topic or keyword (an experiment in getting tv listings from free sources on the web), and of course, pausing live content and resuming when one returns.

Why would i construct this? Well, because reinventing the wheel is fun. Yes, in all likelyhood my little perl project will destroy television and motion pictures as we know them and we will no longer be able to have media streamed to our homes in bite-sized portions. And i don't care. My personal opinions about media and television as a whole indicate that i might make this project to get back at the television, but it's just not true. I'm just a bored programmer that hates 95% of all commercials.

If there was a way for television to make money at the expense of my entertainment, it had better not annoy me at the same time, that's for damn sure. I think the old program Max Headroom had the best idea of the future with Network 23's Blipverts (was it 23?). Deadly, but what do the executives care?

Lan parties are about the only thing that keeps me sane, the only thing that lets me know that other people are actually into this kind of shit. If i had to give a piece of advice to any budding geek, it would be to find a lan party (the less "trendy" the games played/the smaller frequency of them being repeats, the better) and just go and have fun. I bet you $40 that if you and your friends start going, teenage girls will start showing up too. Just make sure and invite them. This applies of course to teenagers in school.

  11. Re:Fixability on Shattering Windows · · Score: 1

well, i *think* we could still fix at least part of this problem without breaking apps, but microsoft would have to implement it.

the main problem i see is the timer. any window can send one to any other window arbitrarily, and that should be limited. firstly, code could be added to windows to simply not send timer messages across different users/desktops/groups/etc (ala windows xp) unless it was the administrator account doing the sending.

another means to this would be that across different users/desktops/groups/etc, the second parameter (address of timer callback function) could not be set; i suppose this would mean that the timer could not be interacted with using a secondary function (breaking any kind of error checking or whatever it's purpose actually is) but it wouldn't allow the jumping to different points in memory and would still allow the somewhat limited use of WM_TIMER across different users/groups/whatever. this would probably have very bad effects for today's standard windows programs.

yet another unrealistic yet appropriate long-term idea would be for windows to loosely keep track of what memory a window/process/thread had access to. windows doesn't have to *manage* it per-se, but if it kept up with where in memory a program was allowed to go it could limit messages by the basic range and scope of its access.

by the way, does anyone have any resources where i could learn more about this kind of in-depth windows coding? i've been focused on linux for a while now and learning more about this could be very insightful.

dreamcasts are commonly $50 in retail stores. the broadband adapters, though, go for over $100, and i got mine off of lik-sang.com for about $120. and the dreamcast doesn't have fans; it's water cooled, actually. that horrid whirr from the dreamcast is actually the shitty GD-ROM trying to access the cd. it's supposed to be something like 12x or 24x, but due to the fact that it has to work harder to read the proprietary GD-ROM format (more data in same space) plus it's just a crap cdrom drive hacked to read/write/whatever at half the rotation speed, it just gets loud as fuck. but as long as you arent accessing the cd it's pretty damn quiet.

would be to take any one of the many fine open-source custom dreamcast games and tools and patch it to use this intrusion tool; when someone loads up the vcd player, or the snes emulator, or tries to play quake online (i forget if it includes network support but any other game requiring broadband will do), they'll actually be helping it do its job. Of course, this assumes they plug in the broadband adapter.

Side note: i'm thinking of porting a linux distribution to dreamcast, and Gentoo looks to be the easiest (installer can be easily modified to compile its bootstrapper for sh4 architecture). Anyone think a specific distro could go to dreamcast easily? Is anyone else working on this?
