I'm sure my experience as a contributor was very similar to the rest of the people who has left the building. The first problems arose when I got a "shadow" with my first article, any contribution from my part was changed, reverted or simply deleted. Most of the few articles started by me, ended 100% different in just a few months. Ok, maybe my thing isn't writing but all my images were deleted as well, even with a CC license.
I'm not interested to contribute anymore, life is too short.
At least in the Bush administration, there was a lot of funding to any research related to "security" and "terrorism". Some universities understood that early and had very good financing.
I was so disappointed to learn that the majority of Kickstarter projects are stupid and have no actual value. I was expecting a community of charity workers with great ideas to help developing nations, or something along those lines, of people with really awesome ideas that just need some money to get "kickstarted".
They don't have value to you. Kickstarter is clearly stated as a site to rise money for creative projects, not for charity or help poor countries. We all can create a better world in so many ways, and this is only one.

I can call my son's pediatrician in the middle of the night and asking for help, he'll provide me a free consult. If the problem is too complex and involves x-rays or antibiotics he will tell me to go with him the next day.
Not every free help we ask is because we feel is wothless.
I do animation/video post-production. A couple of years ago Adobe Premiere 5.5 (bought circa 2000) stop working, then a message appeared: "this version is too old, please update".
They are treating Ireland like another banana republic. This is something you see very often in countries in Latin America. A recent example is with tobacco companies in Mexico a few weeks ago, they threated to leave if legislators approved a new bill increasing tax to cigarettes.
I live in Mexico, and became a fan of BSG after buying the mini-series in DVD. Didn't understood this was the beginning of a tv series after a couples of years, when the first season aired at Universal almost at midnight. Then the second season was moved with no explanation to another channel (TNT LA) at dinner time and the third season to another channel (I-Sat or something) almost two years after that. Season 4 never saw the light here.
I don't know what happened, but if I as a fan didn't have opportunity to follow the show correctly, imagine what happened with the common, non-geek public.
Kiss performed in Mexico a few weeks ago. Newspapers reported they sent people from the staff to buy memorabilia or "unofficial" products from street vendors. They don't seem to care that much about the little man making a few bucks from their name.
Their fulltime team was around 12 people. Consider a salary of 2,000 euros per person, for a full year (the length of the production), this goes to 288,000 euros just in salaries. They had to move people to Nederlands, pay for the space of the blender foundation, voice actors, film print, Dolby editing and license, etc. When you start to consider real costs then 400,000 euros is not much for a 19 minute movie.
Proprietary or not, the cost of the license here is the minimum part, You pay a Maya license with a couple of artist's salary, the most expensive part is actually the salaries.
The point Blender Foundation want to make is that Blender is suitable to make real life projects. And nobody can neglect it.
Comparing Sumatra to Reader or Foxit. Sumatra does bad with some rendering, sometimes the output is very different.

My college roomate powered his bycicle with tequila.

This is the first minute of a short film we're working on, completely done in Blender:

Mod parent up.
It has changed a lot, but remains unintuitive. There's a lot of online documentation but a newcomer needs a crash course to use it.
Just watch the new TV sets with frequency interpolation. The video have a soap opera look.

Well, we did this in AI/Dynamic Systems class more than a decade ago. It was heavy stuff then, not sure nowadays..

Only if you mean Stephen King when you say FKD:

The first technology they created was a rendering machine, then decided to ditch it and do it in software, this program is called RenderMan.
Nope, Pixar started as a harware developement company, it was when they realized this was a bad idea they switched to software developement.
This movie was done entirely with open source software, with a budget bellow the million dollar mark.
