You shouldn't have moved the quote. "Clear Channel" stations are the radio stations that the US intelligence community covertly broadcasts their propaganda the subliminal, liminal, and superliminal ways. It is often disguised in "song" form that sounds like the angst and/or sexually frustrated messages that fifteen year-old girls write in their diaries and "sung" by people that look like Abercrombie and Fitch models. In other words, pop stations.

I was on the IRC channel eagerly waiting for its release. #quake on EFnet I believe. Stomped had probably announced it earlier in the day. It has been ages (don't even play video games anymore) but I was pretty into that online scene back then and I never was more excited for a game to be released than then. I believe Christian (Xian?) came on the channel and announced there were some problems so I wasn't able to download it that night but I was able to get it the next day and play it for a bit before I had to go to work that evening. It was unbelievable to look at after spending so much time making levels for and then deathmatching on them in DoomII. I can still remember where every powerup is in DM4. Those were definitely my fondest video game memories.

I must say that I'm excited about video games for the first time in years because of the Wii. Really looking forward to that.

  5. Re:Show Opportunity Costs on Slashback: GPLv3, Firefly, iTunes · · Score: 1

Serenity was fairly well reviewed but it was not a major box office success. In fact, it lost plenty of money in the box office. The total worldwide gross was less than the production budget (I don't believe those numbers include marketing). See this link (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=serenity. htm). Not to mention the fact that the studio only gets about 50% of the box office. They split the rest with the theaters. I think the studio usually gets like 80% of the first week and it declines after that.

So, it was not a major box office success. They'll probably sell enough DVDs to break even though. Those are insanely profitable for them and the audience proved to that they will purchase them based on the sales of the TV show's DVD set.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A268 77-2005Mar11.html This article is a bit outdated but it was the first one I came across. The release time between theatrical release and the DVD release is growing shorter and shorter. The primary reason seems to be to save money on the huge marketing costs for theatrical release and DVD releases. $30 million seems to be average for big budget movies. If you look at http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=island05.h tm The Island's costs and performance you can see they lost a lot of money. The studio/distributor gets about 50% of the gross box office sharing the rest with the theater chain. The studio gets something like 80% of the opening weekend revenue and the percentage slides down each following week. But you've got to figure with all of the commercials you saw for this movie that the marketing cost at least $30 million. Stealth was another example of a poor performer. Both are likely candidates for a quick DVD release so that the studio can capitalize on people's memory and spend less on DVD marketing.

So, to make a long story short, expect a lot more movies on DVD in three months time.

but I completely agree with you. My car might have to go into the shop more times but it would be safer because of it, assuming they do a good job with the programming and redunancy. (Perhaps this would be an instant that minimum government restrictions would be beneficial)

You're right that the technology is going to keep getting better and better. I think the real question is how long is it going to last. Both original owners and used car buyers have expectations about how long a car should last. My gut says that these new computerized cars are going to have a shorter lifespan than cars now. But warranties are getting longer. So maybe cars will become something with a 150,000 mile or ten year lifespan, whichever comes first. If you buy one used then you'd better get it early in its lifespan.

The CEO has to answer to the shareholders. In a large publicly traded corportation he might be a large one but he usually isn't the largest. Look at Michael Eisner and what happened to him. It is unfortanate what happens to minimum wage workers (I was never one but I was pretty close at my first couple jobs) but it is the CEO's job to maximize the return on the investment of the owners of the corporation. If he can get people to work just as effeicently for less then he has to do so.

Are you talking about McDonalds and fast food orginizations when referring to minimum wage labor? Are those employees unionized? I would hope their unions could get them at least slightly above minimum wage.
