  1. Typing on iPad Review · · Score: 1

In my use the past couple of days, I found the Apple folding case makes a big difference when typing on your lap. Folded so the screen is at the ~15 degree angle made it much more comfortable. YMMV.

  2. Location on iPad Review · · Score: 1, Redundant

"My iPad has no 3G, therefore it has no GPS. But applications were constantly asking me for permission to use my location. This seems like an oversight: if you don't have a location sensor, don't ask! Even the built-in Map app asked me for information that it could not possibly have."

IIRC, the iPad uses Skyhook in wifi mode for approximate location sensing. Not as accurate as GPS, but it found my house in Maps. Works well.

  3. Re:Tablet PCs on Apple Tablet Rumor Wrap Up · · Score: 1

"One thing that we can be sure of is that Apple is going to tout this tablet like they've invented this type device. The people at Apple are smart in that they aren't early adopters of new technologies. Others do it first and run into the issues anyone will face with technology in it's infancy. The segments of the market generally starts petering out as those guys move onto devices and that's when Apple jumps in."

    Umm, Newton?

"The fact is, if you've got an iPhone, which most people interested in this tablet likely do, there's little need for this device. If this thing is running a version of the iPhone's OS then there's even less use for it. In my opinion a tablet should be a more portable alternative to a laptop, not a big brother to a mobile phone. Otherwise I expect these things to collect a lot of dust. I don't use my tablet PC for much of anything nowadays; I've installed automotive diagnostics software on it and even that doesn't get much use."

Have you tried reading a book on the iPhone's screen?

Not to be an old grumpy man, but RS has missed out on the electronics maker revolution of the past decade. They could have been on the ball, like NewEgg, for the PC modding market but failed to adapt to the market. The RS of today is but a poor imitation of the RS of the '70s and '80s. Full of crap, obsoleted models and cheap junk. /Now get off my lawn.

  9. Re:SCOTUS should not be driven by ideology. on Visualizing the Ideological History of SCOTUS · · Score: 3, Insightful

Unfortunately it is impossible for any person to apply the law to a particular case impartially. Judges are human beings who take their own prejudices and worldviews into the court, it is not simply left at the door. For example, Assoc. Justice Scalia appears to have chosen "originalism" as his approach to interpreting the U.S. Constitution. This approach elevates the plain meaning of the text, as understood by the framers, as the main criterion for judicial review. Thus, when the constitution is silent on a matter, such as the right to privacy, the existence of this right is left to the legislature and not appropriate for the judiciary to decide. However, Scalia's view is but one interpretation of the constitution, among many competing views. Expecting judges to not decide opinions on the basis of their ideological preferences is idealistic and naive.

What has surprised me about the Obama campaign was how they used information technology effectively to get their message out. These people get it. This administration understands that the majority of the U.S. population has access to the internet, has become relatively informed about the issues and wants to be kept in the loop with respect to governmental decision making. Not to be partisan, but this is quite a change from the previous administration, who made few efforts to directly connect with the average voter.

I saw the original Star Wars at the theater when I was six. I saw the next two, Empire and Return, on the big screen when they appeared as well. Seeing these majestic space operas as a child had a profound impact on me. These movies set the stage, along with other contemporary "childrens" novels and sci-fi of the late-70s/early 80's, of a life-long love of science fiction and fantasy fictions. More importantly, this gestalt provided a novel framework for a belief in a limitless future, a need to challenge authority and an implicit belief in the use of technology to create a better future. (Not to sound too grandiose.)

Seeing Star Wars as a child has had a lifelong effect upon me and my worldview. /Can't say the same for the prequels though...

  22. Issues with Leopard on Leopard as the New Vista? · · Score: 1

I have had Leopard installed for about a month and a half on my G4 1.5GHz Power Book. No problems, not a single lock-up. I upgraded from 10.3.9 and Leopard runs just about as fast, with some apps loading and running a bit faster. I upgraded mid-semester and was admittedly concerned about running 10.5.0 version of the OS (now 10.5.1) but now I am completely comfortable with the stability. From work and personal experience, to compare the stability of a version upgrade of Apple's OSX to an upgrade from any of the following: 3.11 to Win 95 to Win 98 to Win 2000 to XP, with a side track down the WinNT route (the best experience by far) is simply fallacious. No comparison, and that is why my mission critical apps a run on Unix, ala OSX.
    My two cents, of course.
