Agreed, it's sad when, in order to enjoy freedom, you have to LEAVE the US. If Russia is a preferential place to be than the US, then that tells us alot about the state of this government.
Don't get me wrong. I love this country. I was born here, I'll die here, I still get teary eyed when watching 4th of July fireworks, I feel proud when I read the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. I love this country, I just hate the government that's running it.
I'm still pissed that the FBI, the frigging armed police of the government, arrested him based solely on the complaint of Adobe.
He's a frigging citizen of another country, and the software he wrote is not bound by the DMCA. IANAL, but it seems to me that the FBI has gotten themselves in a ton of hot water.
My question is, why hasn't the Russian Consulate raised a stink about this? Or, have they, and the DOJ is keeping it all hush hush?
This would be sweet for those games with tons of keyboard controls, like flight sims. Reconfigurable, graphical. Now, if you could have part of the LCD configurable as a game-updated screen, such as a map or radar screen for flight sims, current weapon loadout for Mechwarrior, etc.
This is actually one of the best ideas I've heard in a long time. PBS - Pirate Broadcasting System! Total broadband usage across the internet might be around 10-15%, but among us geeks, it's probably closer to 85%.
I'm sure that among all of us, we've got every episode of The Simpsons as MPEG, every movie ever released on DivX, we could do this.
Accessing the media stream would require a software key. And when the MPAA and RIAA break the encryption, we'll throw the DMCA at them.
However, the article said that the trial was in California, and selling 100k N'Suck albums in California isn't too big a stretch of the imagination.
When I first heard about this, that was the first album I thought of that would have this. Traded by tons of teenyboppers, and if the copy protection does affect the quality of the music, who's gonna notice it on that album?
WWII Online has barely playable code, terrible interface problems (three keys to fire a gun?), weird hardware requirements (can't drive a vehicle unless you have a certain kind of joystick!), and ridiculous bugs (gotta love those flying tanks.)
The code is very playable, as long as you're not expecting Quake.
If you're gonna mention interface problems, talk about the radio. The three keys to fire a rifle are pretty damn realistic. Raise gun to shoulder, look through sights, fire gun.
I've played this game with four different joysticks, never had a problem. Two were MS USB Sidewinders, 1 Saitek, and 1 Logitech.
And I haven't seen a flying tank since the first few weeks.
Am I defending this game? Yes, because I feel it has the potential and I'd rather see it get there, rather than see it go down in flames.
I bought WWIIOL the day of release. Network problems prevented anybody from playing the first week. They've had the same problems as EQ, UO and AO, not ready for prime time.
The difference is, you can see that Cornered Rat Software (the dev of WWIIOL) is actually making progress. And the flame wars in their forums easily match those on the AO forums. The developers of WWIIOL are actually reading postings in the forums, and participating in the discussions. I've never seen a posting from the AO staff anywhere in their forums.
WWIIOL has the potential to be a truly awesome experience. They're just not there yet, nor have they said otherwise.
I'm a die-hard baseball fan (GO TRIBE!) and I have no interest in seeing a robot pitcher. Being a pitcher is more than pitching exactly where you want the ball to go.
It's intimidating the batter, being intimidated by the batter. It's watching a pitcher go 7 innings, after throwing 100+ pitches, tiring out but still throwing 95mph fastballs. It's Clemens throwing chunks of bat at Piazza. It's waiting for some batter to go after Pedro Martinez, bat in hand (God, I hate Pedro!)
You can't compare baseball to plowing a field, or making crayons. Baseball is sports entertainment, not work. And Battlebots/Robot Wars/Robotica don't count. Those are not robots, they're glorified remote control cars.
Now, the idea of human sized and shaped, fully automatic, non R/C robots fighting ala WWF, that might get my interest. But mostly for watching how the bots are built.
Microsoft won't be broken up, at least not anytime in the near future. Does it really matter anymore?
Linux is advancing fast and furious on Microsoft's turf, the desktop. Palm still dominates the PDA market. Microsoft isn't even on the map for the wireless market.
People are seeing the.NET initiative for what it is, Microsoft's way of controlling when and how you use their software.
Microsoft is rapidly becoming irrelevant. The small innovative companies MS has tried to crush, or buy, are rising up to the challenge, and beating Microsoft. Internet Explorer was Microsoft's last major hurrah, and that's just because they forced the entire company behind it. Can you see that happening with WinCE/Pocket PC? XBox? Wireless? Not bloody likely.
Microsoft rose from the ashes that was IBM's move into the PC market. Microsoft has become those ashes. They're no longer a leader, they're a follower. And Microsoft can't survive in 2nd place, their corporate structure doesn't know how to market and compete from other than a total dominating position.
When are the people that submitted stories and letters to your "Voices From The Hellmouth" series going to get credit and/or control over their stories posted on this site?
Seriously, this does raise a valid issue. When we post on Slashdot, who owns the copyright on the posting? What if you post text that is already covered by copyright (code, essay, etc).
Maybe we all just need to put a copyright notice at the bottom of our posting.
So, if Opt-Out is the way to go, when can I opt-out of paying Income Tax and Social Security? Neither one is doing me any good. The government will have their First Amendment rights, while I'll have my Fourth and Tenth Amendment rights.
First, a Monty Python poll. Now, Monty Python action figures. Slashdot must think we're all just worthless geeks with nothing better to do than vent about Microsoft and quote lines from Flying Circus.
As mentioned in the article, having a contract that specifically stipulates that all coding done by the programmer on his "offtime" remains his own property is a big one. I've turned down jobs because of such clauses.
Just because I work for you doesn't mean you own me. If I choose to work on job-related projects at home, on my own equipment, on my own time, that's my own choice.
However, using company time and company equipment for personnal projects is an iffy proposition at best. Not that it's ever stopped us. And visiting/. is job related, really!
Because of some licensing issues, characters created for the cartoon series (American Maid, Die Fleidermaus, Sewer Urchin) will NOT be in the live action Tick. However, characters from the comic books can appear (even if they appeared in the cartoons also). And the pilot episode has the replacement characters, Lady Liberty and BatManuel
I haven't seen the pilot, only the brief previews and pictures. I think this show will be awesome. It looks like we'll finally see a great comic to live action show. At least, until Spiderman comes out.
All I want is a live action Chairface Chippendale! And Paul the Samurai! And Man Eating Cow! And The Chainsaw Vigilante! And Clark Oppenheimer!

I would buy it in a heartbeat.

See ya on the battlefield

So, when will google.com be filtered by CyberCensorNetMommy?
However, if you photocopy those printouts, that's considered copyright infringement.
Damn, I hate copyright law almost as much as I hate the US Tax Code and gun laws.

And French Taunters, I want French Taunters!
And, along with the Castle Anthrax and the Swamp Castle playsets, let's not forget Camelot, with dancing knights and ham and jam and spamalot.
And the village from Bring Out Your Dead, with real play sh*t.
Jeez, we could go on and on. Oh, appears we already have.
What about Solitaire by post? Or Marbles by post? or, my personnal favorite, Twister Online!
Oh yeah, they're right. NI!
This one goes to 61".
and if your credit card comes back denied, we'll throw you into the airlock and put your lights out for you.
is that Paul Hogan be launched as Australia's first satellite! And maybe The Crocodile Hunter too.
"Tommy, why were you spending so much time in the bathroom at school today? Are you feeling ok?"

Thank you, I've been saying this for years.
I have the first amendment of the Constitution protecting my speech. What amendment protects you from being offended?
Counter-Strike, compile kernel, router down, All Your Base
Action, suspense, drama, comedy
Almost forgot. Ninjas! Lots and Lots of Ninjas!
