  1. I'm still not convinced on FSF Issues GNU/Linux Name FAQ · · Score: 2

Sorry, but I'm still not in agreement with this:
    A) The GNU project did not start Linux.
    B) The GNU project is still working on it's own OS! (Hurd)
    C) It is unpronounceable.
    D) It is a stupid thing to haggle over.
    E) Everytime some GNU purist hears a person say linux, they immediately pause the conversation to waste the person's time explaining to them how evil it is to call it Linux not GNU/Linux.
    F) Did I mention it is a stupid thing to haggle over?
    G) Did I mention that they waste people's time with it?

  2. Re:Light Weight on Mozilla Jumps on 'Lean Browser' Bandwagon · · Score: 2

Not just that though, load times for the browser are higher on my machines with Opera. And the page load latency you speak of does seem higher with Opera to me. I use IE on my Windows boots (when I boot into Windows...it isn't often lately) and Galeon in Linux. So, I'm not exactly a militant nothing Mozilla type...I've just had poor experience with Opera.

  3. Re:Light Weight on Mozilla Jumps on 'Lean Browser' Bandwagon · · Score: 2

It is funny you say that. From my experience (YMMV) Opera is much slower. I heard how fast Opera was, so I downloaded it and watching as the images diffused before my eyes. Whereas, with Mozilla and related browsers (I normally use Galeon) and also with IE, everything is snappy. Perhaps the Gig of ram (*evil laugh*) helps in that, but should that just make Opera all that much faster too?

On the other hand, when I'm at school and I use the linux lab's ever not so fast Pentium 3 550MHz with 128mb RAM, Mozilla has a hideous load time, and Galeon's is only decent at best. However, once loaded, the page load times are just as snappy as here at the house.

As for this being a step in the right direction...
It is my understanding that the Mozilla project's main goal is to produce the browser engine. So why don't they focus on bug fixes and let people like Netscape and the Galeon project make browsers? Galeon is great (along with a few other Gecko engine browsers) and it very lightweight.

  4. Of Course.... on Report: Broadband Too Expensive For Many · · Score: 3, Interesting

It is much more expensive to get broadband in some places than others. I would be interested to see these results accoording to geographic location. Here in Atlanta, getting good DSL or cable modem service is not that expensive...in fact it costs about the same as a second phone line and dial-up service. The problem here (IMHO...) is one of availability as most people I know simply can not get it. Overall, these results do not surprise me, especially when I hear how much my friends in other states pay for broadband, it seems pretty obscene next to what I pay.
