Yup. My take aswell. I've worked with fairly large environments for 15 years on two continents. Bearing in mind what resources/clout/management buyin you have, It sounds as though this goal is too far off for you to accomplish.
Basically, you're currently responsible for something you dont have control over - and management seem to be happy with this this.
It's your rep - but I would be getting out of there *very* quickly, hoping that nothing burns or breaks before you leave.
That was what I meant (expressed in some convoluted way I guess;-). Since the load would be on the DB, I was considering the consequences of using RAC - would I be hitting a bottleneck in Hibernate itself?

.. just curious; when you reach 5 or so nodes - how does hibernate scale ? - this considering the db will be under considerable load due to having to handle persisted sessions from all nodes, transactions from all nodes etc. etc. - Has anyone heard anything about Hibernate becoming a bottleneck under heavy load (between nodes and db(s))?
- Don't bring mosquito repellant to Africa. The stuff we've got here can kill elefants. Your repellant will merely badger the african insects into attack mode (and you don't want that).
I was recently offered 28 USD / hour for a dev position in India. That would have bought me a lifestyle most people in Europe and/or the us can only dream of (ie: beautiful house, cook, driver, maid, gardener etc.) Your problem is that you use LAMP. You wont be able to make any serious money off that for at least a few years. Look at the supply and demand in the marketplace and hone your skills accordingly.
Well - I live in Europe and my guess is that the media will soon find a way to blame: 0. Bush (he's gotta have something to do with this, right?) 1. Global warming (since its clearly happening much more often now compared to last year; 1 tsunami compared to 0 during last year).
SMS usually works - it was the only means of communication I was able to use successfully when: 1 - I needed to find out what was going on in Jamaica during hurricane Ivan (my old folks live there) 2 - I needed to find out about colleagues working in the twin towers during 9/11
Also, yeah - sure, this is what governments are supposed to do, but having grown up in the third world I dont expect government in many countries to even start thinking about dealing with disasters of this magnitude. Some countries dont even have any governments and some governments are active participants in creating disasters. I've used SMS across borders between asia, europe and the Americas - the only problem I've experienced occurred when trying to send an sms to Thailand from South Africa using a mobile with a South African subscription.
So basically - A solution based on using an SMS gateway would probably be extremely useful. I've been thinking about building one myself (before the Tsunami struck) but havent had time to do anything about it..
Hmm.. considering the rampant drunk driving, carjackings, "fishing"-style robberies (robbers standing on a bridge that goes over a motorway in order to be able to pick off cars by means of a well aimed throw of a suitably sized concrete block) etc. etc. neither would I.
hehe.. out of curiosity - can you get them with white walled tyres? guess you could fit a good dozen of ppl in it and call it a taxi!;-)
But I was under the impression that these things dont really happen that often in the US.. or..?/m
the US will have to decide how much measures of this kind will cost in lost revenue and if these policies are worth this cost (loss of revenue from tourism, international business etc.).
Personally, I've lately decided to do my utmost in trying to avoid setting my foot in the US due to the behaviour of the US government vs. visitors. Travelling to or through the US is simply too much of a hassle nowadays. Delays and lack of respect for the privacy of the traveller are found to be unacceptable by more and more travellers. I know of several colleagues who are now refusing to go to the US on business.
Its really pathetic to see the US complaining about reduced tourism, troubled airlines etc. when this clearly is the result of a concious choice.
And to think that I was close to move to the US a few years back.. I'm so glad I chose to live in a different jurisdiction since I see the massive drawbacks of being a US citizen/resident everyday in my job (I work in private banking).
"The next dialog asked him about his "Keymap" which seemed to be something similiar to a keyboard layout, which actually should have been affected by is former selection but appearently was not"
NO - this setting is NOT the same. In my workplace we have german (Swiss-German and German), english (uk and us), french keyboards.
Since these "i18n" efforts started - life has become hell. A few examples:
- Outlook suddenly decides that since I'm using a swiss german keyboard. When everything switches to German - how do I switch it back (since I dont know the language?)
- The ClearCase plugin in Eclipse suddenly switches itself to German since the keyboard is German. I have no clue as to how to switch it back (again - I dont know the language well enough to switch it back)
- ArgoUML's webstart version naturally switches to German (hey - the guy is using a german keyboard, right?) and does not provide _any_ visible way to switch back (I asked a german speaking colleague to see if I could change the language settings, but no). Apparently this has been fixed in later releases(?)
- For some reason, opening an Italian document in Word had the nice effect that when I installed QuickTime (at roughly the same time) - it switched all language settings of the quicktime install to Italian.
It sure was a lot easier to work in international environments before these i18n efforts started.
.. or they can sell services like: - localized weather/rain warning - used in Japan since a few years - datingservice where the singles get alerted when they are in the same cell as another single (signed up to the dating service) - also used in Japan

I second that. Had a very similar experience. I will never buy ATI again.

Europe will see though and reject this perversion. A Simple enviro tax will cripple US exports.p %3A//www.inkjetmall.com/store/info/pdf/ink-pricing .pdf&ei=NYEgQ6uqMM7kwQHG-5mRCQ
The EU actually encourages ink refilling.. an example:
