Everything's gonna have some problems. We used this to pick up iTunes gift cards three days before xmas, in and out in 5 minutes.
vs. Target Stores: All lanes open, all lines have several people. You're gonna be waiting about 20 or 30 minutes just to get to the checkout. Apple store was nothing for us, but even vs. swiping once or twice or a couple times for the CC to take. Yeah, that's counted in minutes, not in lines. So, yeah, implemented well then. Especially since Target doesn't read any of my CC's in their machine, they always have me do it 4 times then take it into the cash register and THEN it reads just fine.
If you're baseline is "perfection" for measurement, I guess nothing is implemented well, and all retail should shut down until it can be perfected?
That's just an example. Everything has problems, you have to have a relative comparison.
And besides, how often does something work perfectly the first time it's implemented? Stuff is known to always have trouble. But compared to traditional stores and malls, it really kicked ass. Even if you had to wait 15 minutes, going to most other places that close to xmas, you're doing quite well.
Ever seen those Self Checkouts at the grocery stores? Terrible terrible programming, those need to be hauled out to the road and shot. Maybe the next big upgrades it'll be better but I haven't seen a minimal upgrade yet.
Will there be a wave of EcoHackers who override the labels and put a kid getting fatter and fatter and then dying of a heart attack on those boxes of sugar-sugar-sugar-fatty-sugar-froster-sugar-flakes ? Cuz that would be cool.
Or an even better way, since telling people they'll get fat if they eat that stuff, would be to put goatse on there. Still want it? =) Nope, and didn't have to tell you anything either.
Pretty much everyone with an iPod listens to music already. Juswt because I buy a new iPod doesn't mean I'm a new customer, it means my source changes to iTunes(although discs when iTunes doesn't have it). That's all. There shouldn't be a huge surge in the market, I'd actually think it would go down since you can buy that one or two good songs from an album instead of the whole stinkin' thing. The music industry is being held back though, it has to change and adapt to the new ways of distributing music, instead of forcing it down your throat like rape the consumer has more power than before, and that's not how the industry is used to dealing with things.

Books do not cast to movies easily, if at all. That's why they're "destroyed by two-bit producers who can't invest the little time and energy it would take to do them right." There's just too many variables. Internal dialogue, monologues are pretty much a no go in movies, but they're one of the things that make books work well. There's just too many, if you want to be a book to movie conversion cop, you gotta just look at reality. It's the same base story, but presented in two different ways(See The Wizard of Oz, See Wicked(The Musical), read Wicked(The Book)). You'll see 2 different versions of one side of one story, and 2 different versions of one story where they intersect.
The best thing to do is think of it this way, there is the story, that book took it from there, and made some changes that don't completely follow the story or are different. The movie follows the story, not the book, and also makes some changes that don't completely follow the story and makes some other changes. The story has to be adapted for books, and it has to be adapted for movies. Yes, I know it was first a book, but before that, it really was a story, in the mind of the author, and it went from there. So the book isn't the original, it's just an adaptation of the story. It's hard to take, but that's the best way to do it.
I'm tired of people complaining about a movie not following a book exactly, if they did, we'd have some pretty boring stuff out there. Harry Potter leaves out a lot, but leaves a lot in. Read the Slashdot posts for LOTR, you'll see lots of little errors, but it was good overall. Narnia was good as well, and from my understanding followed the book pretty closely but some things were different. And yes, some books do translate to movies really well, but exceptions are not the rules.
Hi Coca-Cola, this is the Texas Department of Transportation. We've just struck a deal with Pepsi who will now have priority access to our highways and roads. You're trucks will be stopped for two days at all border crossings and before getting access to the highway system, and will be capped at a maximum MPH of 40mph. If you're interested, you can upgrade your access as well to the new level 2 system for a nominal fee. What do you mean don't taxes pay for the highways? Of course they do. And we control that money and those highways, so we can charge extra if we want....
3-5 lines isn't much, how many extensions though? A lot of the times a solution won't work for everybody, and it sucks when the coolest/best isn't the cheapest.
It's always been cool to be a geek, but it depends on your defintion.
Out of the mainstream, intelligent, yeah. Always. Check the old war movies, you've always got the radio guy in some big thing.
Fat, smelly, and unkempt? No, not really popular, not really mainstream. Sorry, but even a geek can go to the gym, shower, brush their teeth and shave every once and awhile.
So, go shower, shave, brush your teeth, lose some weight(if you need to) and go out there to some social situation with non-geeks(bar, church, etc..) and talk to people. Yeah, if you're cool, they'll talk to you. Mainstream means included in the norm, so you gotta go out there and talk to them. The world won't bow down to you, but they'll say Hi if you do.
Also, non-geek topics a plus with them. =) It's great if you can fix their computer, that gets your foot in the door, if you can also talk about whatever, it keeps you there with them.

Make a usable interface on the front end, and have a nice listing of links on the bottom that points to a valid web page with the information that the Ajax pulls out. Simple. Done. And now users have a much better UI for your site, and robots can still crawl it.
First IB works fine, has 1.26% interest on their checking to boot! NetBank isn't bad either. C'mon, you're on Slashdot, you're probably a geek, go with an Online bank. If you're paranoid like me, do both online and brick and mortar. (Oh? I lost my checkcard. Damn. Let me transfer my money and use my other checkcard while waiting for the other to arrive. Sorry paranoid+bad luck).
Not the best interfaces though, it's really lacking compared to most banks, but you can do everything you've ever needed on it. Bank One/Chase works too. Bank of America(ugh, not that I'm saying to ever get them. Just google for "Bank of America Fees" I've never had so many fees as with them).
On Topic though, I think a lot of places will be increasing support if they did not before, banks don't have to, but stores are easy, if one doesn't work right, there's 50 other places selling that same item normally, and losing 10% of your customer base is really bad no matter how you look at it.

I don't care about anonymity, I care about ease, I want to use my card, it's just so difficult for some reason at the Target stores.
It was optional. Cash registers are still located at the back of the store.
There ya go, everything you want(paper receipt, status enabling apple bag) and everything others want(faster checkout, little or no line).

Google Diesel Hybrids, they're getting around 70-90(and I believe VW is gonna release one in Europe, but not here).
Of course, then you switch to Biodiesel, paying about 20c/gallon(if you make it at home), and well, there ya go.
My favorite story is the guy who evacuated from Houston during Rita, who had a hybrid.
Only half a tank of gas, sitting in traffic for hours(gas engine switched off, and with AC and everything of little battery usage).
Needless to say, he got to Dallas with his car, while everyone else left theirs on the side of the road. There are other advantages.
Not to mention there can be even more savings when people drive differently(Yes, different type of car means you have to drive it differently).
