I remember reading an article in Compute! Magazine (early 80s) which described the features that the Home of the Future would have. Among the features was a "cassette deck embedded in the wall, to facilitate storage of personal records, files, and recipies".
With the pace of technology today, I wouldn't try to predict what the home of 2000 will be like, much less the home of 2001.
This is extremely good news. We've been a BSDI BSD/OS shop ever since we opened in 1996, and just recently we made the decision to start trying out FreeBSD on one of our production servers. I've been using FreeBSD for about 2 years (since 2.2.6) and have had nothing but good experiences with it. This move by BSDI and WC definitely means good things for the BSD community, and it'll make my task of getting FreeBSD on all of our servers much easier.
I used to be big on laser sports though, so I found the plot pretty interesting. It would be neat if that type of gaming technology actually existed, with dynamic environments and such. It'd be like taking Photon or laser tag to the next level.
Sometimes, Netscape doesn't allow you to follow links. Like, the pointer will change to the "hand" when you move over the link, but a click doesn't do anything.
As far as I've been able to pinpoint, this is some sort of problem relating to JavaScript. Every time this has happened to me, JavaScript was lurking around on the page.
There's also a bug related to Java which causes the netscape process to not exit when you close all of its windows.
Actually, it's already out (P/N HKT-8100). Nothing short of amazing. Mmmm, Soul Calibur on a monitor.
On one end it's got RCA A/V ports and an S-Video port, and on the other side it's got an SVGA video port and stereo audio jack. There's a small toggle switch on the front of the box to select PC or TV.
Ben Green! now there's a name I haven't heard in awhile.:-)
Ben, last we spoke, you were looking for some high-end servers to handle the Gore2000 mailing list. I was just curious as to what kind of solution you went with and what your experiences have been with it.
I've been thinking about picking one of those up to replace my aging TI laptop. My TI can only get about 30 minutes out of a fully charged battery at this point, so at least I'll be doubling my battery life. (:
As someone who's been reading Slashdot ever since it was "Chips & Dips" (News for Nerds on the stuff worth caring about), I can't say I'm too worried about the whole VA thing. If Malda says that he keeps creative control, then that's just fine with me. I had some doubts about the whole Andover deal (Over-night Open-Source), but at least we got Robin from Andover News and Emmett from Linux Today on board.
For the most part, the Slashdot community is very bright. If they sense that something's up with the stories getting posted here, you can bet they'll either A) criticize the hell out of them, or B) go elsewhere.
I can't help but think that Rob was dragged kicking and screaming into this one, having rejected an earlier takeover offer by VA.
The thing that turns most people off is probably the money. In our unique community, there's more grassroots and community support/acceptance for a site run by a struggling college student and his friends than there is for a site run by a for-profit corporation. People like to side with the little-guy.
Like Rob said, VA is smart. I like to think that the community is smarter. If VA screws this one up, the Natalie Portman, grits, and Don Knotts guys will be the only people left posting here. I just hope VA is smart enough to realize that.
"install media player as root" then the program totally messes up the system, for "optimalisation" purposes.. next thing you know your system is as buggy as a smartupdated version of win98.
From what I heard, Andover has pulled someone from their regular line of duty to work on nothing but getting the Slash code ready for public release, so don't think it's not important to them.

We'll see. ;-)
Double points to the first person to get it working with the i-opener.
This rumor was started with a quote taken out of context from a Sega executive. It's not true (Sega has said so themselves).

..Microsoft stock jumped over 2 points today following NASA's announcement.

The graphics are pretty damned good. I got my DC on day one of the US release, and I've not been disappointed. Here are some audio/visual tidbits.

While we're on the topic of AOL and their crazy hijinks, what's up with this?
CowboyNeal confirmed this last night. While NSI gets its shit together, Hypermart has been gracious enough to host slashdot's DNS.

So what? Does that mean he's automatically banned from posting anything interesting?
I saw a similar post when there were rumors of MS-Office under Linux. Funny stuff.

That having been said, you should caption this picture with "Andover.Net Hitmen" and hang it up somewhere.
