    I do a fair amount of work with small UAVS (10-20 foot wingspan), and a 2-stroke powered propeller is definetely the way to go. Its been done for decades with success, its far more fuel efficient than small gas turbines (For subsonic speeds, all propulsion systems benefit from economies of scale. In general, the bigger the area of air being accelerated, the more efficient it is. Thats why the turbofans on modern airliners (B-777) are so large.), and parts are cheap and readily available. I question the ability to build a quality UAV to carry that much weight for that distance though. We are talking about 500$ for engine, minimum 5 servos x 80$ each, and that only gives you 100$ or so for the airframe. I would estimate for the basic airplane around 2000$ or less.

    This has got to be the urban legend that pisses me off the most, just because so many people try to make a point out of it. Long story short, originally both the USA and the USSR used pencils, but they would cause problems in microgravity due to the leads breaking and floating around in the air. The Fisher pen company developed the pen with their own money and sold each pen to nasa for only 2.95.

    Actually, assuming I remember my significant digits and things right, for the 10 mm to actually have 2 significant digits (and therefore be +- .5mm) it would have to have a decimal point after the zero, because trailing zeros without a decimal point are not siginificant. So:
    10 mm == 1 cm
    10. mm == 1.0 cm

    As much as we like to say bad things about Windows' security here on /. (and I won't argue with the poor security of Windows), I don't really think that most spyware is a security issue. Most of the spyware that gets installed is installed hidden in amongst other downloaded programs, and the only warning that the user has might be one or two lines in the EULA, which no one bothers to read. I think that the real culprit behind spyware is the companies that play these dirty tricks, and also to some extent the users that blindly click every little button. I've learned to carefully look through the installer instructions on random programs that I download, and I very rarely have problems with spyware.

    Actually, while I'm not the parent poster, and I don't really know if he is actually talking about pirating the movies, he may in fact be talking about buying imported dvds of movies that have already been released in other countries. (assuming he lives in the United States) For example, two recent movies (Hero and Shaun of the Dead) were both already available on dvd in other countries before they were released in theaters in the US. This also seems like it might be becoming more prevalant as US audiences let go of their prejudices against foreign movies, and Hollywood starts importing more of them.

    ABS increases the distance required to complete a stop, but it allows the driver to retain control of the vehicle.

    Actually, most of the time ABS will decrease the distance required to stop because the coefficient of kinetic friction is always lower than the coefficient of static friction. So making sure that all of the tires are not skidding decreases the stopping the distance. One exception to this is on snow or sand, where the best way to stop fast is to simply build up a wedge in front of the wheel, which skidding will cause.
