When we see BS patents awarded, I think we should do something about it. Let's send emails and letters to the party seeking the patent to let them know we know it is bogus. We should also send letters and emails to the USPO and the patent issuing officer to inform them of this bogus patent. Of course we should include info on prior art to both parties. We should be rude about it, noone will take us seriously. It's like teh USPO is living in a bubble and that bubble is not anywhere in this world.
the reason this is stupid to me is that the user was given a low battery warning/alert. if they continue to use it, they deserve to be thrown off (it is sort of like the Segway saying "get off you idiot, I can't go anymore"). do we recall cars because drives get stuck in some inhospitable place because they refused to heed the low fuel warning?
So, feel free to deploy Linux if u haven't already. When SCO come knocking, just send em my way. I have nothing to give, so you are covered. Just tell em I said you can use Linux.
they are doing such a good job and being such good citizens to the OS community, I want to donate some bucks. Since I am only using MySQL for personal use and I don't need support, I don't can't affort that much, but I don't mind a $50 - $100 donation. I just sent them an email to add a donation link using PayPal or something, like Blender or some other projects..v
IBM is not getting the message. May be that's why we can't find another place like earth yet. We have not build the "Deep Though" to create one. May be Blue Gene will.
I see this back firing in the following way. because companies are in bed with each other and do buy each other products, big companies especially, will be the first to welcome an operating system like this. Joe User too, is not completely tuned into what is happening and really don't care to know if u try to enlighten him/her. So they too, that is--the average user, will also be there with the big companies to buy it. no matter how i advice my window savvy user, who aren't too ignorant about computers and M$ anyway, not to use or move to WinXP, they still did. It is kind of baffling to me how they would say yes, i understand the implications, but would still turn around and support the regime.
but here is how i see it falling apart and back firing. because such tight control will be exercised on the users and companies, they will eventually realized they are not free to innovate. this will pissed most people off. remember, the PC got particularly popular in part because it was cheap, easy to develop for--get info, and so on. hence why there are and was so many people just writing a little program to do some crap everywhere. just visit download.com or 32bits.com to see this. consider how long simtel was around and i think it has more dos utilities than just about any other archive.
well, all of this control on the user and their inability to innovate and be free with their PC will result in them using something else. like one of the many freely available OSes. right now, Linux looks just about capable to satisfy those user.
So i say let M$ go ahead and do their thing and keep tighter control of the user. eventually it will break. i am not worried. they are implementing their own down fall better than anyone else could.
I mean, they are one of those companies in favor of the CBDTPA, copy control mechanism, and just plain crazy about IP. Why then do they want to reap the benefit of OS products and technology that opposes all the other stuff they stand for? Is like they want to use the same technology to earn a living which is at risk of dying by their own actions on another lever. Basically, one hand is feeding OS while the other is try to kill it. Or i could just be blowing this whole thing out of proportion.:).v
this shouldn't be a serious threat on linux. since the average user don't install new software often (unless they install every piece of free software). and since most of the installation would be done by root who hopefully knows not to install something not trusted (and probably digitally signed). where is the problem? i think we should get into the practice of only installing software that is digitally signed. red had for one signs all their rpms. and some other sites sign their sources too. so don't freak out about not having source either.
what makes you so sure that noone here uses vb? personally i have moved my entire computing experience at home to linux. but quite a few people here still use m$ at home and work. y alienate people?
i appreciate the time taken by the author to write an article to help others (even if the material is documented elsewhere). having different perspective on a given subject never hurt anyone. besides, he digested it and is now trying to make is simpler for some of us. hell, i know the basics of XML, XSL, and so on, but still find this namespace thing a little daunting.
but wasn't there some issue before about Microsoft hindering how and which bugs are reported to the bugtrack web site? if so, then there u go. Another thing is the Linux source being open. So bugs may be easier to find. but with windows, most users won't know if they are seeing a bug or not much less where to report it.
It is a mistake to say that Linux is not as good as Windows on the desktop. The desktop was mostly all M$ had been doing. And windows was not always great. Remember just being able to run just one applcation at a time in Dos? And with the apperance of windows, how beautiful was it in those early early years? Remember too, it was just a crummy shell on top of Dos up until Win9x. Windows started to get its current look and feel with W95. Before that it pretty much sucked. Linux has a pretty good base and window manager. Now we are getting down to figuring out the look and feel we want. And that is very promising because there are several options. So give linux the same benefit and opportunity we gave windows before it got as "usable" as it is today. just my 2cents.
that if M$ has a trademark on Windows, and Lindows does have a weak case. The implication is that M$ has a "virtual" trademark on ?indows where ? is [A-Z]. That doesn't make any sense to me. And that is why i find it troubling. Companies will trade mark XYZ and kind of automatically have a trade mark on ?YZ.
I got a PS2 last week for christmas (yep, opened it already) and i bought Grand Theft Auto 3. That game is amazing. I find it very addictive. The graphics is really incredible, the attention to details is more than i have ever seen (but then i have been away form console games since SN16 & Sega Genesis). M$ Xbox does look pretty impressive, but i like the idea of voting with my money. Besides, i am not at all disappointed with my the PS2. Once again I have fallen in love with an inaniminate object.
They have not released much info to say that it will be better than Itanium. Additionally, I am always cautious of things that promised to be easier and still yet faster. Engineers know that there is something called optimization. Usually, the ease of use variable and speed variable are competing ones. That is to say, if it is easier to program, then the chip is most likely doing more for you and will probably eat some cycles from your program. Just may 2 cents.
gaining on M$ gui install?

Looks pretty good to me. This should encourage even more sideliners to jump onto Linux. From the looks of things, it might be a no-brainer for most beginners. It seems to have a lot of devices listed just like Win9x.

but here on /. we must know "will it run linux?"
.v
i have been waiting so long to say that. but seriously, depending how it looks, i would buy one just for the name.
someone to ask about linux. :)
Ok, so what does it run?
seems like it has been slashdotted already. I tried to register, but couldn't register.

correction: bit 24 & 35 is wrong.
