    From the article...

Like previous versions of MyDoom, this one too seems to be listening on certain ports for commands. Ullrich pings each port, but the virus does not react.

    That's a neat trick.

I guess they mean "ping" as in "connected to a TCP or UDP port in some manner", and not the usual "send ICMP ECHO_REQUEST", which I don't believe has anything to do with "ports".

    Hi,

I don't run FreeBSD except for where I'm forced to (currently 2 servers ;). AFAIK, FreeBSD has better ACPI support than NetBSD, which, in the upcoming 2.0 release is not complete. As far as APM support, NetBSD has had this for quite some time, and it seems rather mature to me (well, just like the rest of the OS ;). I'd wager that FreeBSD APM would be just as good, but you'd have to ask someone who actually uses it.

I think you'll find that is suspend, not hibernation, but it's still good. BTW, as a data point for you, I have two laptops (a compaq amarda E500 and a toshiba satellite 1410) and they both suspend perfectly, similar to your Mac (suspend in about 2.5, working again in 3sec).

Oh, and they both run NetBSD - the neat thing is, 2.0 has ifwatchd which will watch an interface for something to happen, and run a script if it does. Mine, for example, watches for carrier to return on the ethernet interface, deletes the route and restarts dhclient.

Use it at work, suspend it, bring it home, keep working. Magic.

(Note to flamers, I sure your INSERT_OS_HERE can do the same thing - this is just meant as a datapoint ;).

Think about the damages on windows PCs. Users are advised to keep their machines up to date and yet a significant proportion of them do not listen (want proof? Mydoom is now in version C and still taking hits at MSFTs website).

Your comparison with "their machines" and the phone firmware (essentially this is the phone "OS"), makes me think you believe that Windows Update can defeat MyDoom.

Actually, MyDoom has fuck all to do with keeping your Windows PC up to date. It is about keeping your _virus_ scanning up to date, and not running attachments that make it through to you. I could have just run and completed Windows Update, but still be infected with MyDoom via the very next email I received and (stupidly) ran the attachment of. Remember, virus scanning is NOT part of the Windows OS, it is something that must be loaded and configured and paid for (usually, unless you go with grisoft or similar).

Your point would be a lot better made if you referred to something like the Blaster or Nachi worm, where the fix was available via Windows Update for several weeks.
