Well, I keep harping on this, but companies need to...find a way of boosting revenues with advertising.
Dude. I hate to break it to you... But that is *so* last century. It didn't work then, and it won't work now. Especially for the smaller players that have nothing to really differentiate themselves from the pack and don't have mile-deep pockets.
they're not in trouble. They're dead. Please give an example of any company that has had to resort to laying off *90%* of their staff and has survived the calendar year.
I can't name any specific company off the top of my head, but if one did it on Dec. 31st they'd likely beat your deadline.:) I do however get your point. Just being a pedantic bastard. Mod at will.
All the TiVo "service" does is download the tv listing for your area and television service.
In deference to your reasonable comment... My comment was made in response to the likely never-ending flood of comments that follow any TiVo article with the "Why can't I just put this together myself?" comments, some of which preceded mine.
So I repeat. If you can put the equivalent unit, in an equivalently nice looking box that mirrors the functionality or does it one or more better I'm sold. Make it GPL and hackable and I might even throw some extra money your way. Until then? STFU.
a) Go ahead and homebrew your own PVR. Whe the quality of features matches TiVo for the price, size, and esthetics of the unit, give me a call. I'll buy one.
b) You simply cannot match the features (and AI) currently offered by the TiVo service by attempting to hack into various online listing databases..
c) Once your piehole is shut, remember to breathe through your nose.
Bill Jones has not flooded my doorstep with flyers or printed material. Nor has he put his face all over TV ad spots.
You must've not been watching much TV lately. I've seen his ads everywhere. You'll note that he ends them something like: "My heroes are Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Rudy Giuliani".
What makes Aluminium easier to machine than say, Magnesium or Steel?
Hmmm. You don't seem to know much about metal, do you? Aluminum is a rather "soft" metal, therefore it doesn't require rather expensive machine tools to machine. If one wanted to (and had a decent set of hand or low-end power tools) you could ostensibly make this at home in your garage. Of course, the laser-cutting device might not fit unless you had a large garage.
Magnesium and Steel, on the other hand require some serious hardware. Plus, steel is rather heavy, although a rusted out case might look pretty cool.
Yikes, I certainly wouldn't recognize them as an authority. Blue text on brown backgrounds. Black text on dark green. Not the best link to use as an example....
highspeedmailer.com HAS to be one of the worst cuplrits out there. Amusingly enough, they leave web-based spam stats on their mail gateways open to the public.
mailer1 mailer2 ....etc. I stopped at looking at mailer10. Nice of them to show off their spamming efforts, I suppose. It'd be even nicer if their upstream provider would pay some damn attention to complaints.
Watch out, there will be spam on the one dollar bill next...
Ahem. Back in the dot bomb days out here in the Bay Area, say '99-00 timeframe I would get a bill or two a month that someone had previously written a URL on. Crazy...
Likely, that didn't work too well either but at least it didn't cost me anything.:)
...the island would eventually disappear and they could lay claim on the.ms tld. It hasn't quite worked the first time, but it's only a matter of time now, and Microsoft is very very patient...
Well, we all know they never get things right with the first release... (rimshot:)
Motorcyclists have been using electrically heated gear for years. The first time I heard of an electric vest (powered off the bikes battery) was 25 years ago. Since then, electric (as well as chemical reaction) heated gloves have been added to the mix as well.
As far as I know, no rider has burst into flames yet.;)
In 1979, I skied with some chemical reaction pouches tucked inside my gloves at Whistler, B.C. in some seriously cold weather. It was a joy, but back then the thermal regulation sucked. At times they would get a bit too hot. I did try electric ski socks once, but having the battery strapped to the sock was uncomfortable. I think that was in '80 or so.
There is no reason why this tech hasn't come far enough now to make it totally practical, reliable and safe.
Well, This is just a guess... I speculate that there may be a requirement that electronic-only publishing may be illegal, or at the least would set an "unhealthy precedent". Sure, you and I have computers. So does over half of the population of the U.S. That leaves a lot of people however who don't have access to the medium, thereby depriving them of important governmental information. So, I imagine that anything they "publish" also has to be in dead-tree print.
Of course, this is all just conjecture. I could be dead wrong.
And there's nothing much more ironic than watching someone pull out his tres pretentious Platinum Card (no longer all that--the real elite have the Centurion black one)
Oddly enough, Paypal's own Visa card (yup, got one right here) *appears* to be black. However, on holding it up to the light it is actually a smoke colored translucent plastic. Hmmm. I wonder if that means anything?
Seeing as how CERT was aware of this last summer, and has been working with vendors (ALL the big names) to get it corrected at least we can hope that the patches are available.
Getting them installed may be a different story. There are probably a lot of "forgotten" SNMP devices out there...
...has been the #1 most-emailed photo on Yahoo News for over two weeks now.
Hmm. That's no ringing endorsement. Either Yahoos counter is screwed up, or no one really gives a crap about female skater booty. To quote: Sent: 17 times
It doesn't take much to be #1 for two weeks these days. I'd still be pleased to be a happy face in there though.:)
Lemme see....we have in the internet the biggest shopping mall in the world and yet these guys can't figure out how to use the internet to generate revenue?
Unfortunately, neither can 90% or more of the sites that are out there. That being said, a little Olympix Pr0n and you might make a fair bit of change.:)
Oh please. Like the "manufacturers" you speak of really give a shit about the end-user.
They are so clearly insulated from the end result that anything shipped is simply gone. It's sort of like the classic used auto dealer "taillight guarantee".
"Once the tail lights can't be seen, they guarantee is over".

Oh yeah, that certainly swung my vote...

OK, now that's depressing. Hmmm. Check with one of your sisters. Frankly, I'm baffled.
Cue Monty Python....
Hey Waittaminnit. You're me!
You wouldn't happen to have a sister, wouldja? ;)

Hmmph. I've met quite a few "anti-me" types. The worst that ever happened was a black eye. That Hawking guy ain't so smart after all..
So I can just buy half a processor, and get full functionality? ;)
Whaddya talking about? He's got a four digit UID. Everyone after 999 is an asshole. We're just bitter. ;)
How quickly people forget gorilla. sheesh. I STILL love that game....

Like what? Post nearly 800 comments on /.? Hypocrite.
