but that's the point, the problem is that people think something is official just because it looks like it.

Hey, uh can you help me out? I drove my family to the city from new jersey and blew out my tires, then we ran out of gas and I lost my wallet. Could you spare $20.00 so I can get my family back home to new jersey. I will send the money back to you if you give me your address.

How many times have you heard a similar spiel? People fall for this kind of bullshit all the time. A scam is a scam, whether perpetrated online or offline. One time i saw one of those elaborate story telling scammers, then saw him the next week. He started in on me again, and I mentioned how bad his luck must be to have it happen twice in one week. He looked surprised, so I repeated his whole story back to him pretty much verbatim. He didn't wait for me to finish before striding off to find another victim.

My other favorite con that my sister's ex boyfriend fell for hook line and sinker. These suburban rocker types drive around and tell of how they bought some KICK ASS speakers and when they went around to the loading dock, they accidentally gave them two pairs. Of course they cost about $800 new (yeah right). Anyway, they rope you in with this story and you end up forking over $250 (or however much they can clean you out of) for some ultra crappy speakers that belong in the city dump. Apparently this scam even made it on to "The OC". I googled speaker scam and came up with 'the white van speaker scam'.. check out this url to see how many pigeons they got:

  3. Apple Lossless on Holiday Competition For iPod Dollars · · Score: 1

Is the compression really that good? That sounds pretty generous for lossless. I think the real reason for apple including that in itunes/QT is that soon we will see full quality lossless music for sale on itms. Remember, the reason that mp3 became popular is that all of a sudden it was easy to trade music over networks. Back then sending lossless copies of albums was difficult because of lack of widespread broadband. Nowadays people are shuffling dvd_r images around by torrents and other P2P nets. Lossless audio doesn't seem that far fetched. The concert taping scene (phish, string cheese incident, dead, etc) already use FLAC for concert audio files. I can't imagine this is very far off at all.

Regarding ipod killers, it is going to be hard for competitors to catch up at this point. Ask a few 15 year olds what kind of mp3 player they want....

I am a macintosh admin that ended up doing tons of windows desktops too. I was surprised by the lack of rescue tools for our windows systems at work. On a mac it is easy, boot from firewire drive, or boot from cd, or boot as a target of another machine. Then you can rescue data and move it easily. I asked the other admins about booting from a cd and moving stuff over the network, etc and nobody had a cd for this. I decided to try using my knoppix cd to get data from a non booting dell XP laptop. Basically I figured it out in less than 15 minutes. I booted from knoppix, mounted the local hard drive, started samba service (dont remember the gui name) and shared it. Then I went to my pc, typed in the ip address, username knoppix and a password set by me. Full access to the unbootable machine's HD over the network. Thanks slashdot and knoppix !

Just trying to point out that it is a tricky issue that is not as simple as separating your morals and your work duties. What if you were a strict vegetarian because you didn't like the idea of eating animals or slaughtering animals or anything to do with hurting animals? 18. Re:Don't on High Tech Baby Monitoring? · · Score: 1

I think you are on the right track with this. It is different though when you have an infant. They are very very vulnerable when young. It is better to have a good 'gut feeling' about your babysitter than feel like you need to constantly surveil them. If you have had a certain babysitter for a while and suspect something is wrong, maybe you want to tape them. We had a babysitter when our son was just 3-4 months old, on a regular basis. My daughter didn't seem all that stoked, but couldn't really verbalize at 3. I set up a isight and caputured a few sessions. I found that while she wasn't a 'bad babysitter', she was amazingly lazy and talked on her cell phone most of the time, preferring to sit my daughter in front of the TV the entire session, and paid little to no attention to either kid, meeting only their base needs (bottles, diapers, food). She didn't read a single book or play a single game during the two 4 hour sessions I capped. I got rid of her.

Now, a few horror stories from the naked city: wife's friend learned from another nanny that her nanny had lost the 2 1/2 year old daughter in central park for 2+ hours because she was busy chatting in the nanny corner (in NY, many nannies are carribean and sit together at parks, chatting and such). The nanny never told the mother or police, but did manage to find the toddler albeit 2 hours late. Another child bearing couple we know found out that the nanny was pretty much constantly preaching fire and brimstone gospel to their youngster. Maybe not a horrible thing, but wierd nonetheless. Confirmed that our babysitter wasn't that great when I saw her pushing a 2 year old down into his stroller by his head.

One more thing about surveillance, I believe that the feeling of being watched breeds resentment, so what might begin as a good parents-babysitter relationship could turn sour when the babysitter finds out you don't trust them and are watching their every move. Better to check out several references from other parents. I would never hire a babysitter without references. If you must, maybe capture a few sessions and review later to ease your mind, live surveillance 24/7 will turn you into a nutcase.

I knew a developer for BeOs back when it was still in business and they thought multimedia Kiosk type systems were going to be almost ubiquitous. The advantage was for the low latency high availability type stuff, not to mention stability. Far as I know to get this type of performance from linux you have to hack the kernal extensively (too lazy to look up the audio focused distro that has low latency kernal hacks, but you all know how to go to google and type 'low latency linux audio').
