English can be a very vague language, and can be open to all kinds of interpretations. That is why English (or for that matter, any other verbal language) cannot be used. We need a language that has exactly defined syntax and semantics.
Take the implicit parenthesis in certain conversations in english.
"I am going to speak to the boss and tell him im having an operation or i'll get fired"
Could mean:
(speak to the boss) AND (tell him im having an operation OR i'll get fired)
Or the more obvious/natural:
(speak to the boss AND tell him im having an operation) OR (i'll get fired)
Last I heared, it was approx £500 (GBP) per eye to get laser correction.
I opted for a different solution: Nowadays you can get "permanent" contact lenses. I put them in, and after like a month or two I take them out and replace them with a new pair. Beats the age old problem of forgetting to take your lenses out late at night and ending up with dryeye.
Additionally, the word from my optician is that if you take them out and clean them once a week, it'll extend their use to two or three months per lens.
Just a thought, if you're looking for alternatives.
This law is going to make modchips illegal to stop the people that are already breaking the law by purchasing illegal games, thus making their illegal game playing more illegal.
Sure, that makes perfectly sense. Obviously its not going to stop the lawbreakers from doing what they do. Its just another case of those annoying laws that end up screwing around the more legitimate users.
Woah now... backup a bit!. This is NOT the issue. Blah blah, it only takes microseconds for a fix to come out as opposed to weeks or whatever. You shouldnt compare Mozilla and IE (since im guessing it was Microsoft that you were having a dig at here). It is pointless and futile to do so.
It also annoys me when people go "bahaahaa, my OS/browser/fish cleaner is better than yours" when the 'yours' has bugs etc, but are so easy to come up with an excuse why their choice of whatever is better. "Yeah but beefmark 3.7 is an old version, so it doesnt matter if it has a root exploit in it". We've all heared it many times before. It is inevitable that (especially big programs) will have bugs.
It all boils down to this fact: There is an error in a program that people use. Evil people will therefore try to exploit this hole.
In the nicest possible way, this study is useless. People will *never* stop finding security holes, therefore there is no option for discussion. Just like biological viruses will never decide to stop infecting. We should concentrate our efforts on solutions, not re-iterating the problem.

I think thats just an argument with the semantics. Yes, its based from WinMX, but I think the name is in fact, "Winny" as is shown from the titlebars of the screenshot.
Copying good ideas is a good (not to mention, sane) idea. To be honest, you'll find it *everywhere*, its not gonna go anywhere soon. Of course, if you copy the idea and make a worse copy of the original idea, you are destined to fail in the long run, even if your marketing department is superb.
<Random tangent>...which incidentally is why patents as a generalised idea are a Bad Thing(tm)</Random tangent>
Ok, so how about this for a ludicrously mad idea. When (if?) the installer comes into play, there could be two versions. "Minimal" and another version with a couple of useful plugins etc.
Alternatively, as long as the plugin mechanism is relatively simply (which it is), and as seemless as possible (getting close), then i dont think there should be a problem for most users to upgrade.
Compare with Internet Explorer, which comes with no plugins, Firefox users are no worse off. Granted, in comparison to maybe Opera, we dont get mouse gestures and other funky things as default.
I guess its a hard thing to decide simplicity/speed vs user base/catchment area. Thus why the minimal/standard installations could be a good idea.
Indeed. Put simply, it'll screw up natural selection... Sure nano technology is good in the short term, but we must ask ourselves if it is beneficial for us in the region of 1000+ years away.
Yeah, but almost everyone I know that has a hotmail/msn account has it because they use MSN Messenger. And the majority of (non-geek) people I know use MSN Messenger. There is just no chance getting them to change over to something like Jabber. Why would they? For those who use MSN Messenger, hotmail is very convenient since its nicely integrated, and - as the argument for most Windows programs goes, "just works"
NLP (Neuro-Linguistical Programming) is a great subject for this kinda stuff. Its based on the modelling of sucessful people in any depth you wish. Covers things like building rapport with people, as well as confidence and the like. I noticed that most of the decent material is in book format, and not on the net. Search google, but note that a lot of the links will lead to commercial websites rather than useful information.
America != The World. "Security of the American people" is unacceptable if it causes distress and violation of international laws. Not that this stops them of course. Views like this are the kind of quasi-elitist views that get countries into wars, not out of them...
On the flipside (as opposed to most posts here), I believe that this is a Good Thing(tm). We need more reviews for every part of linux, from all types of users, ranging from newbie users to harcore linux hackers. It is the only way to drive forward and put in place better/decent GUIs - or for that matter, anything else visible to the end user
That isnt necessarily a bad thing, forcing users to clue up on good practices regarding viruses etc by automatically blackmailing their email address otherwise. If this is coupled with a decent system to stop the from/to/cc from being filtered then it may start solving two problems at once.
This is a potential misconception from a lot of people. The problem with bootable DVDs arise because the DVD sometimes hasnt enough time to spin up in time for it to be read by the bios. My laptop will boot off a DVD, whereas my main box will not for example
To be fair, the logic isnt completely flawed. The MyDoom virus(es) attack two companies renowenedly hated by the majority of Linux/Open Source Users. Leading on from this, it is logical to assume that a Linux/Open Source User is the most likely suspect in creating the MyDoom virus, or variants of.
Of course, what maybe the writer of this post fails to realise is that the BBC doesnt say that since the author of MyDoom is probably a Linux user, all Linux users must be evil. That would be stupid. Just as a virus writer that is also a Windows user doesnt, by any means, imply that all Windows users are evil.
Chances are that yes, the MyDoom creator is a linux-user who hates SCO and Microsoft. Ok, maybe the writer of the article could have eased up on the generalisation of Linux being/becoming evil, but I dont think hes gone far wrong otherwise in his article...
Hehe, kinda like the defense "Yeah, I broke into the house but hey, I didnt steal anything so I dont deserve to be classed as a 'proper criminal'". Bollocks, you're a criminal.

Newsweek magazine ponders if a mobile phone will be 'Your Next Computer'
I think I speak for the large majority of the slashdot crowd when I say 'No'.
Try learning some self defence? I'd suggest Wing Chun, but hten I would do that since it is the style I do...

Leor Weinberger is the grad student, and if you re-read the article you'll see that his name and the link are both mentioned there.
I'd personally rather use notepad.exe than an obscure, evil mixture of both vi and emacs. Vimacs or evim anyone?
Of course, if ssh is as secure as it says, then it renders port knocking a little useless. I think thats what the parent is trying to get at.

Or even, maybe MS will bring out a patch earlier than normal, since they dont have to search for the offending source code :)
You gotta love the BBC
Also, years ago code to version 6.22 of DOS was leaked online but no-one cared because it was so old.
