It fullfills the basic need we all have for ***competition***... Which is also the reason most here read slashdot; not so much for the stories themselves, but the competition that results in the forums!
There was speculation that is the reason Apple raised the price of it's high end iMac last time. That way when the transition to a flat panel iMac came around it could remain at the same price upon release and still be considered the 'entry level' mac.
I know this is an over simplification, but, as long as there is a signal carrying music to a speaker there is a signal to copy... so the only true copy protection is one that prevents the music from being heard at all which of course... negates the need itself.
I wasn't talking about surfaces or movements which can be definitely improved and perfected. I was talking about the acting..which is an artform...and while a computer can immitate art, it would be a huge undertaking to instill creativity. Dare I say a computer would have to be a sentient form in order to gain true creativity. Something which is a long time/if ever in coming.
Remember half the time an actor improvises and more times than not it adds to the scene... I CG character is a one shot deal with no variation in the "acting".
No matter how good a CG model is or how fluidly it moves...it's acting ability must come from a real person otherwise it loses that certain something (read *talent*) that can't be defined but definitely perceived on screen.
I'm engineered in such a way that my cells divide and grow and make me larger and stronger. I was so cleverly engineered that if you cut me the damage repairs itself over time... also I have a system by which I can fuel myself, and a means of distribution for that fuel throughout my body...
Didn't work before...won't work now. Restraint in the use of power is certainly more difficult for nations than for companies. Actions will speak louder than words for most people when it comes down to it.
Situations like this are going to bring about an eventual world government. the case being that there seems to be a need now for some sort of *enforceable* world law or common standard between nations. War will never unify the world, but you can bet petty lawsuits will.
"Once you have reverse engineered the processor, why wouldn't you then put your resources into designing a better processor based on what you've learned, rather than wasting time making a clone?"
Because Via is a company and there is already an established market for the pentium 4. Simply making a superior chip is not a guarantee of success. There is a lot of marketing and thus resources involved in releasing a brand new chip.
Via may in fact be working on a new chip, but one must make money in the mean time.
I suppose you could offer to give residential homes between you and the city free access to your broadband pipeline as long as they set up equipment to act as a wireless relay. You supply/(pay for) the bandwidth and access..and willing participants will set up the equipment.
Our apathy and turning a blind eye to the business practices of MS has put MS where it is today and allowed them to almost freely abuse their power. IMHO it's basically a "hey, you did it to yourselves" kind of ruling.
It's quite easy to see in recent events what happens when privacy gains too much power in society... but let us not forget that too much of anything is bad..and the giving away of too much privacy can very easily create a very different but just as dangerous problem.
IBM is already working on a magnetic form of RAM called MRAM which won't need a constant flow of electricity to store information. I'm not sure if or how it would be used in such PDA's but it's a possibility.

I'm glad MS has told us they have patched *all* security holes in IE.. I guess I can rest at ease now...
Are they going to have a gaming addiction center set up to treat all the participants?

Watch "The Isle of Dr. Moreau" for a small glimpse of what it's like...
Mixing species is just asking for trouble... but who's to stop it..?

I'm not creationist at all... if you read my post it can be viewed from two different perspectives which makes it more Taoist.

Isn't science wonderful...?
.... when the Sun delivers to your door!
Wind it too hard and it runs three times as fast and consumes less power!
As long as I get a penny from each advertiser on that page!!!
After all lets face it... Paying didn't exactly remove commercials from cable now did it.
Once you start paying for anything on a per use basis, the price inflates. period.
You forgot... You have to wait for Interstate 2.
Interstate 1 is incompatible with Internet 2.

So what does that equate to in the proportional number of corporate lawyers...???
Something like this could result in a lawyer singularity!!!
Not even rational thinking can escape a lawyer singularity!!!
It says 'www Inventor' in the headline... yet I don't see Al Gore's name anywhere...

Where would out future combat sims come from!?
We can't just keep fighting the Gulf War on our computers forever...!
He already sent his ruling...

(half tongue in cheek)
Did you actually read my post or just the first part of my obvious run-on sentence.
..and yes I'm quite familiar with the quote from Benjamin Frnaklin... which actually supports what my post was saying.
