I meant in the articles themselves. Surely these tech-literate pundits have heard of and used the competition's operating system, right? I mean, you know, so they can have a frame of reference?
Not to troll, and its nice that Windows users are getting these features, but how come no one ever calls MS out on the fact that Vista is basically still playing catch up to OS X, doesn't do it as well, and is probably going to be left in the dust when Leopard comes out?
Here's hoping MS uses the competition to better Windows. The more secure it gets and the easier it gets to use, the better for everyone, even those of us who don't use Windows.
Now the world will be deprived of another in a long line of well-acted, brilliantly-written, and plot-heavy movies based on video games. After Doom and Super Mario Brothers, I thought it was obvious that all the major advancements in cinema were being made in films that exist as a footnote to a video game franchise.
THe world is now deprived of the incredibly complex artistic vision that would have been a movie based on a first-person shooter. Just think of all the philosophical and political discussions this movie could have motivated if it had come to fruition.
I, for one, am saddened and disheartened by this stunning loss to western culture.
If the studios keep pumping out crap like Fast and the Furious, they'll continue to see box office decline, slumping interest, skyrocketing piracy, and marginal adoption of new technology. Generally bad things for the forseeable future.
I live in Baltimore, and recently we had a flower mart downtown... they blocked off a few streets, and there were tons of vendors, performers, etc etc. Sandwiched between a flower stand and a sunglasses place was a Diebold booth with 2 reps talking up how great the system was, etc. etc. They actually had a few people there trying out the machine.
Enter me. I walk up, admittedly predispositioned to not like Diebold, and asked them some questions.
1. What hard copy proof can I have of my vote? 2. Where is the paper trail with physical evidence of all votes? 3. In the case of a recount, what validation process is in place to ensure the machine's records are correct?
They gave me some BS about how at the end of the polling you can print out a list of all votes entered. I told them what I was asking for was a single, one-person, one-vote physical record, not a grand list at the end of the night. They had absolutely no answer to any of these questions.
Then I brought up the many instances of Diebold machines being hacked and asked them what security measures were in place to fix this issues. I was told they were not aware of any issues and that the machines were unhackable. I asked them if they knew how absolutely ridiculous this sounded.
At this point, some other folks had become aware of the conversation and were starting to ask the same questions about accountability and verification processes. They 2 reps balked and stalled while I pressed further, citing specific cases where Diebold machines had been compromised and blasted them for basically lying about the 'unhackability' of their machines.
Then 1 of the reps walked away. A few minutes later he returned with 2 police officers who asked me to leave. I had not raised my voice, acted theatening, or any other misconduct that would warrant my being ejected. I told the officers I was simply concerned about my right to vote being taking seriously and protected and wanted my questions answered by a company rep while I had the opportunity. The officers told me I was being disruptive. Other people came to my defense. One of the officers had his hand on his gun. They asked if I would rather be removed against my will.
So I left.

I have some experience with Linux... I've played with Ubuntu, Red Hat, DreamLinux, and Freespire on my brother's PC, so I only ever get occassional exposure. I'm good with the OS X command line, but don't use it for day to day tasks usually. I'm familiar with apt-get and Synaptic and can usually work around dependency problems.
however, getting MythTV running on my brother's box proved to be really, REALLY difficult.
Enter KnoppMyth.
20 minute install and 10 minutes to configure. And it all just worked. I'm sold.
Plus, he can use his main machine, a Tiger-running Mac, as a front end as well. Its terriffic. Download it. NOW.
Seriously, that was a great Army of Darkness reference. Bravo. Laughed my ass off.
I'm really pissed they changed that line in the Director's Cut. But c'est la vie. Sam Raimi could fart on a rotten egg salad sandwich and I'd probably buy it.
I just use a Mac and stopped working on my friends' Windows boxes. Suddenly my need to carry around all these little utilities just shriveled up and disappeared, like the U.S.'s social program budget.
How about the Mozilla crew show MS how make a standards compliant fucking browser.
Sorry for the expletive, but shit, man, how hard can it possibly be to not use some fucked up proprietary tags and actually render standards-based code correctly?!?!
I find is abhorable that such lax security measures have led this country to a situation wherein EVERY SINGLE PLANE is LITERALLY a bomb waiting to go off. Failings at every level of our government and incompetance on the part of the airline and aerospace industries contributed to the dire situation we now find ourselves in.
Indeed, EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN is only minutes from dying because of this INVISIBLE and PERVASIVE threat to our national security.
I speak of jet fuel, of course. Were you aware that every single commercial plane being flown in this country relies on a vast tank full of highly combustible material? Their very design renders them noithing more than flying bringers of terror, death, and desolation for the entire country.
We must stand up for our security and demand that this negligent, irrational, and dangerous behavior be curtailed without hesitation. As Americans, we have the justified expectation that we will be safe from everything all the time and nothing bad will ever happen to us; if we lay down our right to militarily-enforced, surveillance-based peace, then who knows what rights may erode later. We may very well lose our right to shop at any number of national chain stores for our consummable household products and THAT, my friends, would be the death of the American way.
The solution is simple. Ban jet fuel. Lighters will be confiscated and destroyed. Ban any metal objects, to prevent the creation of sparks. Metal framed glasses and their lenses will be confiscated and destroyed, as they could easily be refashioned into a weapon. Food will cease to be provided on the grounds that biological elements would be easy to spread by a passenger who is a willing carrier of a devastation infectious disease.
There are no lengths we will not go to in order to ensure our ongoing sense of contentment and solitude. If you are not with us, you're with the terrorists.
WMV's look identical on the Mac as they do on Windows. Its the exact same file. They can be played through QuickTime using Flip4Mac, VLC, or mplayer without problems.
WMV and Real are just as good on the Mac as they are in Windows.
For proof that this post is rubbish, look at the fact that the poster refers to "Jaguar" That was the code name for 10.2. That was many years ago.
I'm so sick of having to fix hard drive corruption caused by LimeWire on people's computers.
Look, people, its real simple. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE RIDE. I don't give a rat's ass if you think the RIAA and related companies are immoral, that is NOT an excuse to STEAL MUSIC and therefore propogate a different kind of immorality.
PAY FOR YOUR SHIT. THEN YOU WON'T GET SUED. ITS VERY FREAKING SIMPLE.
This is even cooler - using Virtual Desktops, Shadowbook, and Parallels Desktop, you can switch between OS X and Windows just by waving your hand over the ambient light sensor in the MacBook Pro...
You're making a lot of assumptions and outright lying about other things.
First, the content isn't jittery. Its usually 30fps, at least 24fps. That's not jittery. Sorry if it doesn't play back well on your computer.
And who says it'll be 320x240? Its been shown that iPods can play videos larger than 320x240 if the total number of pixels is the same or less. So you could have a much higher rez widescreen file with the same number of pixels that would look great on a TV and still play on an iPod. Trust me, I've done it. iTMS video looks fine on most peoples' regular ol' TVs. Contrary to what you bleeding edge types may think, most of us still have 32" or smaller CRT TVs, and iTMS content looks fine on them.
Your questions are valid. Except one: Why wouldn't you be able to view the movies on something other than the iPod? It seems absolutely ridiculous to assume otherwise. Currently you can view them on the iPod, a TV, projector, computer, basically anything that has a video input that will accept composite, S-video, or whatever outputs your computer has. As far as your other questions, IF this actually comes to pass, then you'll know.
As far as the unwashed masses not being 'tech-savvy' enough to realize that the content is 'dumbed down, diluted quality, highly compressed pap' - most people SIMPLY DON'T CARE. I've got one word for you: CONVENIENCE. THAT is the driving force in the economy. CONVENIENCE is what makes consumers drool. EASY is what makes consumers drool. And iPod+iTunes has that in spades. iTMS looks better than VHS in my opinion. Are you saying that people who used VHS are stupid for not going LaserDisc? Or Beta perhaps? Compressed... hmmm. CDs are compressed too you know. I suppose you only listen to 96Khz 48-bit masters though. Dumbed down? Brother, that's on Hollywood for spitting out the drivel they do. I don't care what format its in, most entertainment coming out is garbage, so don't even try and tell me that a hi-rez version of Batman Forever is any better than a cheap theatre-shot bootleg. No amount of tech wizardry could make THAT movie better. Same goes for most crap pouring out of the entertainment complex these days. But that's another story.
File Vault encrypts the entire user's home folder in a disk image which is unmountable by any other user without the specified password. That means ALL files, cached items, preferences, EVERYTHING is encrypted and de-encrypted on the fly while the user is logged in. Once the user logs out, the only thing that appears in the file system is a single disk image with that user's name on it.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The P4 designs SUCKED, and PPC was better. The Core designs from Intel are worlds better and wipe the mat with PPC.
Stupidly clinging to one position no matter what variables change is something that politicians do that makes me absolutely sick. For some reason, geeks have adopted this kind of cult like mentality too. Ignore changing circumstances and stick with your original position at all costs.
In every race, opponents change positions. Sometimes one opponent has the lead, sometimes another has the lead. In the case of tech, however, the race just keeps on going, and there will never be a 'winner' per se, just back and forth trade-offs in leadership.
WINE uses reverse engineered Windows APIs to run Windows apps w/out running a copy of Windows and isn't compatible with a metric shit-ton of software.
Virtual PC runs a full copy of Windows in a sandboxed environment, great for servers to compartmentalize their various services or for Mac users to run a Windows-only app and is exactly like running Windows on an actual PC.
Care of offer any evidence, anecdotal or legitimate, to back up your claims that:
1. Intel Macs suck. Its the same OS. What difference does the hardware make? And if you've actually USED an Intel mac, you know how much amazingly faster they are than the PPC machines they replaced.
2. "Connext" sold out. Funny, that company was called Connectix. If you're going to make wild accusations, at least get the name right.
3. Bungie sold out. While this may be true on the surface, it was a great business decision, and you can't fault a company for wanting to grow their business. Would Halo have been nearly as successful for the company if it had come out for Mac first, and not at all for XBox? Doubtful.

Awesome reference dude.
Because monotheism, or theism in general, or any -ism for that matter, is divisive, self-important, and exclusionary by design.
Therefore it impedes progress.
Therefore it is stupid.
Oh, and its a Negativland reference anyway. Sorry you didn't get it.
Christianity is stupid. Give up.
Sweet! I haven't heard that since like 1988!
