Scientists account for the lack of transitional fossils through the theory of puntuated equilibrium. Basically, this states that species persist without significant changes unless there is a reason to change. When evolutionary pressure is exerted, the change occurs quickly.

So, since the transitional periods are short and separated by a lot of stasis time, transitional fossils should be hard to find.

The reason you see the slashdot effect so often is that the editors like to link to stories on sites that cannot take any appreciable load, and they neve give those sites a heads-up.

Professional web programming teams always give sites they link to an estimate of anticipated traffic a link will generate.

If you asked a random American to sit down and think about what the biggest problem with our government is, they would say corruption, campaign funding or corporate legislation.

We all know this is a problem.

We send a huge volume of mail to congress about this.

Congress ignores us because it is in each congressman's best interest to maintain the status quo.

In order for this to change, a majority of congressmen would have to put their asses and their pocketbooks on the line.

The other way to change this is by supreme court ruling against campaign funding. Since the supreme court has already declared campaign funding to be free speech, it is going to be hard to get them to change their position.

In other words, we are pretty much stuck.

  21. bad assumption on The Demise Of The Net Magazine · · Score: 2
One assumption you apparently made in writing this article is that giant companies are forever.

You may or may not remember that AOL started as a little yappy dog biting the ankles of CompuServe and Prodigy. At the time AOL was lauded by many as the little guy who was making good inroads in a market dominated by the giant CompuServe. AOL won its position in the world today through a combination of skilled businessmanship and luck.

Somewhere right now is a little company with four or five staffers which will one day eat AOL's lunch.

It may be a little group like feed or suck.

But if there are a thousand little companies that aspire to be the next AOL, then 999 of them will fail. Many will fail because they just weren't good enough, many will fail because they just weren't lucky enough. And many will fail because they were clobbered by AOL. That's the way it goes.

  23. Jabber's Niche on Jabber As The Coming IM Standard? · · Score: 1
A few commenters have touched on this, but I think this deserves a focused post.

AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo messengers are focused on the at-home user. There are some inroads to business users, but they are often viewed with distrust because messages are routed through AOL or MS or Yahoo servers, and also because employees spend a lot of time IMing their friends outside of the company.

As it turns out, businesses would love to use instant messaging for inter-office communication. In fact, many businesses are using systems that predate AIM.

There is a niche market for an instant messaging product which lives totally within a company's internal network. A messaging system which does not rely on AOL's servers would be private and secure, and would be a very attractive solution for a business' communications needs.

It appears to me that Jabber is capable of this type of function. Indeed, it was mentioned in the article.
