The thing that makes using physical currency stupid is not how unwieldy it might be, but obtaining it through untraceable means. Much better to have it wired to a bank that won't give out information to anyone, and then have it transferred several more times.

Although if I were the FBI, I'd be bribing, er "rewarding", anyone and everyone with information along the way, because setting a precedent of you *will* get caught is more important than the money. It would be especially poetic to offer a reward of $10M to anyone with evidence that puts him away.

Try installing CoreAVC (for video) + ffdshow or ffdshow tryouts for audio. CoreAVC isn't free, but it's worth it in my experience. 720p playback is flawless even on a P4, although 1080p.. not so much. 1080p will play smoothly on my 2.4GHz C2D w/GeForce 9800GTX (I think the codec utilizes Cuda), but not my 1.83GHz C2D w/GeForce 7600GT. I believe they have a trial version on the website now. Not sure what, if any, limits the trial has, but you could check it out. I believe it's $10 to buy, so (hopefully!) not breaking the bank in any case. http://www.coreavc.com/

I've never had a problem with WMP or Media Center. If you've got the right codecs installed, then it's just a question of convenience and interface. It's more convenient for me to use Media Center on my TV than anything else I've tried, and the interface is pretty good as well (though I wish they would bring back the filename under the video thumbnail, circa MCE2005). It's also more convenient to use WMP on my desktop, mostly since it's already installed. Yes, I'm lazy. I'm equally lazy on my Mac, using QuickTime to play all videos (again, with appropriate codecs installed). Of course I only play xvids in AVI containers and x.264 in MKV containers.. maybe the odd .MOV or MP4. I don't really care about any other obscure format.

True high-security environments are designed against RF leakage, although as the poster states, such environments wouldn't allow a camera in to begin with. Actually they usually prohibit cell phones of any type, so it's all moot. It's sort of overkill, because there's nothing to keep people from remembering what they see, and if they work there they probably see quite a lot. Such schisms are typical of government though.. place armed guards at the entrance who will let you in with a dollar bill wrapped around a credit card (back when IDs were green). I'm certainly not going to enumerate current security vulnerabilities, but I will say that whoever coined the phrase "security theater" was pretty much on the mark. Most security works as a deterrent, and only sometimes as actual prevention.

Right, I just thought it would be funny to use the pro-filesharing arguments in an unrelated post. I do find it ironic that the points almost make sense, and yet don't quite add up (in either case). What's more ironic is the cognitive dissonance and rationalization. That people can argue for filesharing in one breath, but use the arguments against filesharing when talking about spam in the next. e.g. "It's depriving me of bandwidth (even though the bandwidth was probably unused and I wasn't really deprived of it in any meaningful way)".

What it seems to come down to is "If what I do makes *you* change your behavior, then that's too bad. But if what you do makes *me* change my behavior, then it's wrong." i.e., if filesharing makes you change your business model, then too bad. But if spam causes me do anything other than read every single e-mail I receive, then it's wrong (and stealing!)."

I'm no financial genius, but buying low and selling high. As Buffet puts it, "be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful." It means essentially the same thing. That said, gold seems to be rather high right now, while stocks are quite low. The only way it makes sense to pick gold over stocks is if you believe we're headed for Mad Max. Although personally, if that's the case, I'd rather have guns than gold.

I'm not trying to justify spam, but let's not use incendiary terms when there exists a perfectly valid alternative: bandwidth-and-mail-server-infringement. Resource sharing is the future; the ultimate goal of cloud computing. Instead of trying to stamp out spam, people need to change their reading models. It's not our job to support obsolete reading models, and it's arrogant to expect us to.
