Or you know we could play games on these things called Pee Cees. In which case all it has to do is load the game menu from my 10000 RPM hard drive and should only take about a second or two. EA disagrees with my immediate need to find a server and start capturing silos though and needs to show me 30 seconds of commercials every time I run BF2142.

Even on consoles though it shouldn't take more than a few seconds just to load a game menu and maybe a background image. The real data and texture loading should be done when you actually get around to loading the first map.

Off-topic, regarding the merits of ET:QW...

I'm going to have to agree with the parent here and not with the many people here comparing it to a Battlefield clone. If you want to compare it to anything it's more like the Assault game type from the original UT. It will depend on how the retail maps end up playing but I really enjoy the mission and objective based gameplay more than the typical "capture the flag" or "control the nodes" type stuff which is all you typically see these days(granted, I have not played TF2 yet). I do think ETQW lacks some of the interface polish that games like Battlefield have but still I haven't had as much fun playing any recent FPS(excluding Metroid Prime 3) as I have the ETQW demo.

With the amount of money and power insurance companies have these days how long will it be untill we have one like in "The Island"?

There are still too many questions for me to pass judgement just yet. I imagine it could be an interesting issue for the republicans to see how the religious right weighs it vs big business. I can see how this would be helpfull to a lot of people but it does seem like this slope just may be a bit too slippery for my taste.

Maybe it requires DirectX because DirectX is a lot more than a 3D API. The Windows version of Quake 4(and Doom 3, Quake 3, Quake 2...) uses OpenGL for graphics, DirectSound for audio, and DirectInput for it's control interface. The Direct3D API is never used. I'm sure the requirements mention a DX9 video card just to help eliminate confusion, although you snipped out the part where it lists every supported card.

So yeah, Quake 4 for Windows uses BOTH OpenGL AND a subset DirectX, but it never uses Direct3D.

It makes a perfect travel charger as it's much smaller than the standard AC adapter, even with the car connector. It works perfectly and doesn't even need any power to negotiate a USB signal like the phones that some others have mentioned. I agree that this kind of thing is something that more devices should standardize on.

What's funny about that(and purely anecdotal) is that the WHQL certified driver from November gave me blue screens in World of Warcraft and other random lockups while the uncertified drivers from July have yet to give a hiccup. I've also had issues with some WHQL drivers for the Sound Blaster Live, while having no problems with other non-WHQL drivers for things like SATA controllers.

So as far as I'm concerned the only advantage to WHQL drivers is that I don't have to make an extra mouse click during a driver install.

Actualy Windows XP is smart enough to recognize a HT CPU as one real CPU and one virtual CPU. That's why you can use HT on XP Home(which only supports one CPU). So I imagine that at the very least XP Pro would see a dual core CPU with HT as two real and two virtual CPUs and work just fine like that.

What I'm interested in seeing is how XP Home will support dual cores. Even if it can't yet tell the difference between a dual core CPU and two physical chips , I'm sure MS will end up patching it or something. I can't see Intel releasing a dual core "mainstream" CPU that isn't fully supported by MS's "mainstream" OS.
