  1. Re:You think you've been waiting long? on The Long-Awaited MOO! · · Score: 1

I do play a good amount of Age of Wonders II. It's the closest thing to a MOM sequel as there is. Still I'd really like to see a true sequel.

  2. You think you've been waiting long? on The Long-Awaited MOO! · · Score: 2, Interesting

Sure MOO and MOO2 are fun games and hopefully this one will even better, but I always prefered Master of Magic to Master of Orion(1 or 2). It's going on about 9 years now that I've been waiting for a sequel to MOM. Hopefully now that Quicksilver has finished MOO3 they can start on one of the most requested sequels ever. If you think I'm exagerating just search Google for "Master of Magic 2" and you'll get a whole slew of petitions and editorials saying we need this game. If nothing else I'd like just a port to a modern OS with perhaps some graphical updates and possibly some multiplayer support.

  3. Wrong about XP on Hyper-Threading Speeds Linux · · Score: 2, Informative

While Win2K will see a hyper-threaded CPU as 2 physical CPUs, WinXP is smart enough to see it as a CPU and a Virtual CPU. At the last Intel conference I attended they made sure to emphasize that while XP Home doesn't support 2 phyisical prosessors it will properly recognize a hyper-threaded CPU and allocate resources accordingly. Do you think Intel would enable the technology in the P4 3Ghz(a desktop CPU) without making sure Microsoft supported it in their desktop operating systems?

Matching partial fingerprints is barely science even before we start adding digital mumbo jumbo. The digital manipulation of fingerprints just adds yet another unscientific layer to the process and should most definatly not be admissable as evidence. As many other posters have stated though, I too have no issues with using this technology during investigations to generate leads.

I recently had a customer who needed a laptop for research use on a boat down in California's Salton Sea. I did a little research and found the GoBook MAX made by Itronix. It's ~$5,000, but man is it a neat little machine. Their site has a video where they hose the thing down and drop it a few times. When it finaly arrived at our office I wanted to set it on fire and throw it off the roof(for QA reasons ofcourse). Boss wouldn't have it though. The only issue we had was that there was no LPT port to connect this special hardware anti-piracy key that the users needed to run a specific app. I think they just got a USB adapter though, so no big deal. Check it out, it's a very sexy beast.

You just need the right tools... Many people have already mentioned the wonderous tools over at Sysinternals, but no one's mentioned any of the stuff writen by some finish dude named Jouni Vuorio. Over at his site there's a really nice set of power tools with a registry cleaner, powerful file manager, and remote admin capabilities. While this set of tools is curently in beta I've never had a problem on my home Win2K desktop. On the other hand, I won't use beta software on production machines at work so I just use his stand alone RegCleaner which even when set to "Auto clean" and "Extra powerful" has yet to damage the registry on any PC I've used it on. It has even fixed a few PC's which would only boot into safe-mode. They're not open source, but they're definatly free as in beer. Try 'em out, I think you'll be as pleased as I am.

Well why can't they just post the address to some local bar anyway and let people decide if they wanna go down and see if anyone shows? The minimum of 4 RSVP's is stupid. Just give out the addresses and let whoever shows up, show up. Oh and it would also be nice to not have to lie about my zip code if I decide I want to attend the Los Angeles meet instead of San Bernadino(since it was canceled)

I'm sure that in standard id tradition we'll have a simultaneous release of Doom3 for all of the above mentioned operating systems.

Here in Southern California there was a company called Cross Country Wireless Cable that was around since ATLEAST 1994(I searched desperately for a link). They'd come out to your house and mount a little microwave antenna on your roof that would point to their broadcast antenna and as long as you had a good line of sight the reception was great and had just as many channels as regular cable. Pricing was also very competitive. It just wasn't digital. It seems the company was bought by someone else though and I'm not sure as to what became of the service. It seems to have happened a while ago too which is why I'm unable to find a decent link. The technology is definatly quite old though, now they're just converting it over to digital.

The only real problem we've had with the motherboard are those stupid little fans they put on the northbridge either making tons of noise, or going out completely. Once the fan is replaced by a decent heatsink the board runs spectacularly. The only real bug is the fact that it won't properly read the SPD ROM of the Crucial CL2 RAM and so it must be set manualy. It's my understanding that that's more of a chipset bug than a mobo issue. Sorry your friend's board has issues, but I think he should have RMA'd it or tried different RAM or PSU(We used Crucial RAM and Antec PSU's so that might be why we've had better success.)
