I'd buy and play the hell out of "Enemies of the People 3." Unfortunately, as for the reality of it actually happening... I'm with you on not expecting it to occur in our lifetimes; I'm a little too risk-averse myself to go out there, toting a guillotine.

In my office, it's always the 50+ crowd making the lame old joke "I'd just like a phone that can dial numbers and make voice calls real good," and "I don't need any of this new-fangled crap." Then they spend time complaining about cell-towers or another unrelated topic. A few years ago, the same people complained about show quality when the topic of HDTV used to come up. There seems to be a fundamental lack of understanding that totally different companies are making handsets/tvs from the people doing things like network rollouts/show scripts. Either that or they just have a natural tendency at being crotchety. I expect to see this trend in behavior forever, until I'm the one exhibiting it. :-)

  7. SOX did come from the government on Sarbanes-Oxley Costs Exceed Benefits · · Score: 1

Seriously, in the last few decades, has Congress produced *any* legislation where the benefits exceeded the costs? It seems that the only thing they're capable of is making their friends richer and ensuring they keep their jobs. Since the system is built so that keeping their jobs == selling out to the highest bidder rather than actually *doing* their jobs (the whole representing the people thing), this won't be changing anytime soon, and I don't understand why there are still people who don't see this. Oh, I forgot, they also pander to the emotional voting blocks who want them to make good sound bites regarding issues the government shouldn't actually be involved in.

I'd like to actually be more optomistic or cheerful about this, so really, has there been *anything* they've done recently that was a net win for the people? Is this ever going to change?

Thinking of a "cancer gene" is misleading. Imagine a net of rubber bands all knotted togethor. Changing one gene will "stretch a rubber band" differently possibly affect all the other aspects of the organism, often unpredictably.

Um... No. Genetic science is already at the point where they're manufacturing transgenic animals based on having correctly identified a gene, and inserting it into an organism with a specific trigger, padding the insertion as needed. I'm looking at some such creatures in my aquarium right now ("Glofish" that have sea coral Red Flourescence Protein in their muscle tissue).

This cancer gene could be the one that also gives humans a soul. We can't tell with a mouse, of course, because they only speak in pips and squeaks, but scientists should know all the risks involved with creating such a possible genetic enhancement.

This is not a problem in the slightest... in fact it is an opportunity! If you have this reservation, do not make use of such treatments if/when they arrive. Too bad the "I don't believe in evolution" crowd doesn't practice this and stop using updated flu shots, etc... Seriously though... if this was a real concern, would you then consider all people with mutations to be possibly soulless? Perhaps it's some interesting theory you have about the white people? The problem is that they have drowned real government functions in the bathtub, but they're still proclaiming that it's alive and well, and charging us more for these "services" every year. If they'd just honestly pursue their smaller government goal, then at least people would expect to fend for themselves and maybe even try to help their neighbors more. Things would have been less bad with Katrina if the people of New Orleans weren't still thinking FEMA was alive and well.

That's not to say a functional FEMA would have been even better yet, but this "of course we provide these services; you're paying for them, aren't you?" is far more disastrous than actually minimizing government. With the GOP, we get the worst of both worlds! (I'm sure the other major party would muck up the world as badly in other ways though)

If you're giving money to the RIAA cartel, then you're funding their legal bullying, and you're funding their legislation-purchasing efforts. This is simple to realize, and not some bullshit argument like buying weed from the neighborhood grower funds terrorism.

I am not suggesting that you stop buying CDs! Although I do suggest that you do not purchase new CDs from the companies that contribute to this problem. In addition to boycott, there are other legal ways to make your point. Use RIAA Radar to see if an album is tainted; tell your friends about the service. Buy directly from small artists. Browse MySpace to find new stuff by indie bands. Go to Used CD stores. Tell people about how you spend money on music and how you will not spend money on music. Warn people about corrupt Sony CDs and whatever the next violation is. Tell people what copyright was supposed to mean versus what it means today.

You may not topple the giant alone, but when the daughter of a senator learns about the issue and feels strongly about it, when an exec of a smaller music label makes *less* money with the cartel and drops out of the RIAA, when a cavalier journalist with CNN or Fox hears about today's story and decides to air it, you've made a difference.

Your sense of ethics may provide you with a different attitude towards this, but I'm very comfortable with it: I asked for access, and handing me an IP and info on how to resolve names is permission. If someone operates a device that they don't understand in the slightest, they don't have a basis for being pissy about other people getting on the 'net through them. After shooting the bridge and other good angles for maybe 30 minutes from a nearby park area, the local police arrived. They told me that photographing the bridge is "strongly discouraged." I looked at them like they were on crack, and they added, "for national security reasons." To their credit, they were very polite and seemed somewhat uncomfortable with their new job of keeping the world safe from photos.

The bridge had a new lighting system specifically made for aesthetic purposes, funded by donations from the public over the last couple decades, and this is the fruit of those efforts.

I'm too young to feel this damn old. I remember when this kind of bullshit was for those countries that didn't have freedom like the US.
